Kyushu University, Joint Research with BusanThe Kansei Value Creation Department of Kyushu University's User Science Institute announced that it will conduct joint research with Dongseo University of Busan, South Korea, into improving the design of four transportation hubs in both countries to create more aesthetically pleasing, attractive, and user-friendly facilities. One will be the international terminal at the Port of Hakata. The researchers also hope to employ new survey methods to uncover the potential needs of the facilities. Korean President to Promote KyushuDuring an interview conducted in Seoul with Nishinippon President Takao Kawasaki and other media representatives, South Korean President Lee Myung-bak said his government would begin discussions in the second half of this year concerning the creation of a super-regional economic zone that would include the southeastern part of the Korean Peninsula and Kyushu. The creation of such a zone was one of President Lee's campaign promises in the presidential election earlier this year, but this is the first time he has referred to the issue since taking office. Companies and local governments in Kyushu and the Busan area of South Korea have been rapidly building ties, but this is the first time the South Korean government will become officially involved.
Canon to Build Plant in NagasakiCanon has announced plans to build a digital camera plant in Hasami-cho, Nagasaki Prefecture . The company anticipates that the plant, which will be its third digital camera plant nationwide, will begin operation by the end of 2009. It will invest roughly 15 billion yen in the construction. The plant is expected to employ about 100 people.
Courts to Accelerate Pace of TrialsCriminal courts throughout Kyushu are examining ways to accelerate the pace of trials in advance of the introduction of the lay judge system in May 2009. The objective is to reduce the trial's impact on the regular employment of the lay judges. They also hope to lessen the psychological burden on them as well. This is particularly important for Kyushu, which has many outlying islands and remote residential areas, forcing people to come from greater distances for trials.
Solicitations Open for Fukuoka FirstsThe Fukuoka Convention & Visitors Bureau is asking for solicitations to add to its list of Fukuoka history and sites that are either the first in Japan or the first in the world. The area is already well known for being the origin of udon in Japan and having the country's largest Ferris wheel, but the bureau is looking for "hidden number ones" that aren't as widely known. They hope to use these facts to promote tourism to the area. The solicitation will be open until October 31. 145 Kumamoto Castle Festival Nets 14.5 Billion YenThe festival commemorating the 400th anniversary of the construction of the Kumamoto Castle, held from December 31, 2006, to May this year generated an economic benefit estimated at more than 14.5 billion yen. It also attracted more than 1.7 million visitors, of whom an estimated one-third came from outside the prefecture. On April 20 this year, the restored castle keep was opened to the public. Kumamoto City spend roughly 5.4 billion yen on the restoration work.
Kyushu Uni. to Hold Entrance Exams in ChinaKyushu University's graduate school of business announced that beginning next year it will conduct its entrance exams in Dalian, China. The declining child population in Japan means that most Japanese students who want to go to college will be admitted, and more Japanese universities are competing for bright students overseas, particularly in China. The university's business school conducts a two-year course leading to a master's degree, and most of its students are already employed after having obtained a bachelor's degree.
6 Sixth Graders Can't Place KyushuThe National Institute for Educational Policy Research conducted a survey of Japanese sixth graders which revealed that with the exception of Kagoshima Prefecture, more than half of the students were unable to properly place the Kyushu prefectures on a map. The two prefectures often mistaken were Fukuoka and Miyazaki Prefectures. Their location was improperly identified by only 41.8% and 40.1% of the students respectively. The Institute thinks Kyushu might present problems for the students because they tend to memorize prefectural locations in order starting from the north and working south.

The number of contracts in Fukuoka Prefecture in the final quarter last fiscal year rose 1.7% from the previous quarter, with the result that the total diffusion rate among prefectural households stands at 50.4%, exceeding 50% for the first time. The rate for Kyushu as a whole is 42.0%, well below the 55.6% national average. Kyushu Electric Discussing Rate HikeThe Fukuoka City-based Kyushu Electric Power Co. has begun to seriously consider raising their rates to reflect soaring oil prices. They expect to reach a formal decision sometime in July and implement the new rate schedule in the fall. Price rises might not take effect until January, however, depending on oil prices. It would be the first change in Kyushu Electric's rates since April 2006. Toyota to Start Production of New ModelToyota Kyushu will begin production in August 2009 of a new hybrid model to follow the Prius, it was learned. Plans call for the new model to be sold both in Japan and abroad, as interest grows in more fuel-efficient models due to concerns over the environment and oil prices. This will be the first of six new hybrid models to be introduced over a four-year period. 6 Six Plans Presented for New Fukuoka AirportA committee affiliated with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport met to study plans for a new Fukuoka Airport. During the meeting, six plans were presented for building an airport offshore. The option of adding a runway to the existing airport also was discussed. ANAANA Offer New Round Trip DiscountsAll Nippon Airways began a service in July 1 that will allow passengers between northern Kyushu and the Tokyo or Kansai regions to receive discount round trip fares even if they depart from a different airport on their return trip than the one at which they arrived. The discount can be applied for the use of the Fukuoka, Kitakyushu, and Saga airports in northern Kyushu, Haneda and Narita airports in Tokyo, and the Itami and Kansai International airports in the Osaka area.
