What’s Your Purpose?

If you don’t know your purpose or are unsure, use this simplified exercise to get you thinking about what you have to offer.

5

Some people spend their entire lives trying to define their purpose.

Do you know yours already?

Page 6: Attracting Success; A Goal Planning Primer

List as many of your strengths and positive personal characteristics as you can think of.

Mark the ones which you use regularly, then pick two of your greatest strengths.

6

Page 7: Attracting Success; A Goal Planning Primer

Jot down a few of the ways you effectively and positively interact with other people.

Select the two that are effortless for you.

7

Page 8: Attracting Success; A Goal Planning Primer

Assume there are no constraints to achieving what you want and anything is possible. Describe your ideal world in a sentence or short paragraph.

Pick a particular group of people you feel compelled to serve. If you’re stuck, keep asking yourself, “What kind of people?” and “Does it matter?” until you’ve identified a specific group.

8

Page 9: Attracting Success; A Goal Planning Primer

Combine your answers to create a rough draft of your purpose.

Reduce the draft into one or two sentences. This will be your guiding focus as you create your goals.

How About Your Values?

10

After your thoughts, values are what stand out and drive your beliefs, attitude and ultimately your behavior.

Page 11: Attracting Success; A Goal Planning Primer

Everyone has a set of values they are already living by. A brief look at your calendar and your bank account will reveal what’s important to you. How you spend your time and treasure clearly demonstrates what you currently value.

Review the last few months. Are you happy with what you discovered or shocked and dismayed?

If you’re happy or there’s no real surprise, congratulations, you’re probably living congruent with your core values.

11

Page 12: Attracting Success; A Goal Planning Primer

However, if your findings leave you feeling unsettled, that’s a huge clue that you are not living congruent with your values.

Values are personal

Values are the enduring beliefs that we choose because our specific ends or means are more socially or individually acceptable to us than other beliefs.

Governments, societies, families and organizations may try to instill values in others, but they can’t. The best they can do is decide and declare what values are important to them and then enforce those values through their beliefs, attitudes and actions. What are your top four values?

12

Page 13: Attracting Success; A Goal Planning Primer

Dimensions of Life Along the left column of the Goal Planning Worksheet are eight main dimensions of your life;

13

Page 14: Attracting Success; A Goal Planning Primer

This is how someone who is very satisfied

might describe each dimension.

14

FinancialFinancially independent and free from financial stress. Satisfied with current level of income.

CareerA fulfilling and nourishing career. On a positive career path.

HealthIn great shape. Receiving effective healthcare. Exercising regularly and eating for sustenance and pleasure not emotional comfort.

RelationshipsPleased and content with current relationships. Loved by the people who mean the most to you.

RecreationSpend leisure time enjoying interests. Relaxation, refreshment and pleasure.

ContributionGiving of yourself to others.

PersonalEvolving, not just improving, because you continually experiment.

EducationEngaged in creative and stimulating mental activities. Use resources available to expand knowledge.

Many people spend their energy trying to balance their life.

Don’t.

It’s a never ending exercise.

Strive for harmony instead.

When you place one or two complementary goals for each dimension of your life onto the Goal Planning Worksheet your chances of achieving what you want to have, be or do increases dramatically.

15

Page 16: Attracting Success; A Goal Planning Primer

The four remaining columns, Decide, Determine, Do and Deadline, require careful consideration. The suggested steps below will help you to build a plan of action.

16

Page 17: Attracting Success; A Goal Planning Primer

Decide

Decide on the specific things that you want to do, have or be during the year. Create a SMART+P Goal for each dimension of your life.

Phrase the SMART Goal as a question beginning with “Why?” because it will force your brain into problem-solving mode, which is what it is designed to do.

17

Page 18: Attracting Success; A Goal Planning Primer

18

A SMART+P Goal is one that is;

• Specific, because goals that are broad decay quickly.• Measurable, Motivating and Meaningful, because you

want to know you’re heading in the right direction, be excited by the journey and feel that it’s important.

• Attainable, because you want to stretch yourself without overextending.

• Realistic, because if it’s not you’ll lose your motivation.• Time based, because squishy time commitments will

sabotage your efforts.• + Positive, because creating is better than destroying• Personal, because when it’s your own goal you’re more

likely to achieve it.

Page 19: Attracting Success; A Goal Planning Primer

Determine

Determine the purpose of each goal. Answer why you want to achieve each goal and how you imagine you’d feel once you did.

Do

Do the actions that need to be done. Create a basic task list of things to be done to help achieve the goal. Include the financial and personal resources you need to achieve each goal.

19

Page 20: Attracting Success; A Goal Planning Primer

Deadline

Deadline when the goal will be done.

Stack rank your goals based on 0 - 18 Months, 18 - 36 Months and 36+ Months; or have a specific date in which you plan to achieve each goal by.

20

Page 21: Attracting Success; A Goal Planning Primer

If all this seems like too much work ...

Boo hoo.

It’s rare for an important goal of yours to show up on your doorstep neatly wrapped with a bow.

Do the work.
