Each week a piece of MCS students’ art work will

feature as the watermark on each page of our

newsletter.

This week is work by year 8 student, Kaylah.

I’ll start this week by thanking Warra Warra Legal Service from Broken Hill who gave

our students a bag with a lunch box, water bottle and personal hygiene items in it.

These bags were a practical way to support our families during COVID-19 and were

greatly appreciated by all. We are grateful for Warra Warra’s support.

While our attendance is slowly improving, we are still seeing a number of students

coming to school late. It is important for students to be here ready to learn by 9.00am.

Thanks to the parents/carers who contact the school when their child is away sick.

Tomorrow is our Education Week Livestream, because you can’t come to our

classrooms we’ll come to you via Facebook. So get on Facebook and watch our

Livestream from the classrooms at 12.30pm to see the amazing teaching and learning

taking place at MCS. Don’t forget to comment so we know you are watching.

Until next week,

Fiona

This week in 2/3 we are focusing on the sound u_e in Jolly Spelling. We have been on a u_e sound hunt and will continue to practise and search for this sound throughout the week.

In Jolly Grammar we are working towards recognising short vowels in words, to know when to use the doubling rule before adding ‘ed’.

We have busily been writing short stories about newly discovered planets and look forward to finishing and sharing our stories.

We are focusing on place value in maths and are working towards recognising and representing three-, four- and five-digit numbers.

Our Geography lesson this week is called ‘Cruise the World’. We are looking at the different oceans and continents.

Our Health lesson this week focuses on understanding what feelings are and explores different types of feelings.

We have been enjoying our Technology lessons on Thursdays. So far we have learnt how to save our work in Microsoft Word and then how to find it in documents. We will learn how to change the font, size and colour of our work this week.

2/3 also enjoy our Paakantyi lessons with Kayleen on Thursdays.

What a busy week we’re having!

This week we are learning to use adjectives in order to describe people, places and things. We will concentrate on describing animals and write descriptions together. In Jolly Phonics we have completed all of the main 42 sounds of the English language. We are now moving on to learning about spelling some of the most common tricky words. In Mathematics we are revising estimating, counting and skip counting. In Geography we are discussing places we belong to and what kinds of activities we do when we visit specific places. In PDH we are learning to choose positive feelings, thoughts and actions, and we are learning to make connections between our feelings, thoughts and actions as well as learning to become aware of what feelings are and explore different types of feelings. On Thursday we will be playing some games with Kayleen in our weekly Paakantyi lessons, and we have also been learning animal Paakantyi words with Oakley in our daily Literacy sessions. We are also counting down to our 100 days of school celebrations.

This week in 3-6 we will continue to read ‘The Fat and Juicy Place’ and look at Dreamtime stories in English. The students have been enjoying reading this novel and also looking into the deeper meaning of Dreamtime stories and how they can relate to many people within culture.

Students will continue to build their deeper understanding of number and multiplication in Mathematics this week. It has been great to see how students’ confidence has grown within this subject each week.

Visual Arts sees the students focus on ‘bird’s eye view’ as the weekly prompt for their photography unit this term. Last week the students thoroughly enjoyed the start of taking photographs and exploring different angles and compositions.

Weather permitting, 3-6 will be attending an excursion to The Mission with some of the high school language students this Thursday. This should prove to be a great venture, gaining experience in coolamon making and cooking.

As always, Friday’s highlight is cooking at school. This week students are looking forward to baking choc-chip cookies. Yummo!

3-6 with Mrs Oyston

Students in 4/5/6 have started paying rent for their chairs and they are experimenting with their budgeting skills. Make sure you talk to your child and ask them how they are deciding to spend their money - remember, this is pretend money, but its a good conversation to start at home.

Last week students worked tremendously hard on their multiplication skills and expanding their mathematical language. This week, the students will move on to practice division. Our history topic has continued from Term 2 and we are discussing Australia in the 20th century and the changes that have taken place over time. Some very interesting conversations have been taking place in our classroom and their wonderful to listen to!

Keep up the great work, 4/5/6!"

Hi everyone, I can’t believe it is already week 3 of term 3.

This week in K-1 students are learning about how food comes from the farm to our plates

and into our homes.

Students are also visiting the Library and catching up with Mr Bailey while he reads them

a story and they get to borrow a book.

In 2/3 and 3/6 students are learning about perimeter and are eager to start measuring

shapes. Students are also learning about The Sun, Earth and Moon. Students will

investigate Earth’s relationship with the Sun and how the Sun, Earth and Moon interact.

They will learn that the rotation of the Earth on its axis causes regular changes,

including night and day and the pattern of the seasons.

In 4/5/6 students will be working on their note taking skills during Behind the News,

ensuring that they can capture the main parts of the story.

Students will also look at Positive Living Skills and be working on their highlights and

feelings that the students go through.
