bull Some people agreed with Pres Bushrsquos

attempt to bring Saddam Hussein from

power in Iraq and some did not

(p 458-463)

bull Since the late 1970s and early 1980s technology has done nothing but grow and advance

bull Jobs that include inventing building or using computers and other electronic equipment are a part of an industry called the High-Tech Industry

bull These jobs have become very important for our economy today

bull The first computer ever used called ENIAC was built to be used in WWII

bull It was as large as a room and the reason we say that a computer has a ldquobugrdquo today is because the first computer was so large that it really would get actual insects in it that would cause it to break down

bull Computers were mainly used to store and sort information (mostly numbers)

bull However in 1971 the microchip was invented and it allows all the information that once took up a room to now fit on one tiny chip WOW

p 458

bull After the microchip was invented in the early 1970s smaller computers started surfacing as well

bull In 1977 the Apple computer was presented to the world and in 1981 IBM (International Business Machines Corporation) introduced the first ever personal computer (PC)

bull By the end of the 1980s Americans found PCs popping up everywheremdashlike homes offices libraries and schools

(The original 1977 Apple computer)

bull Just like the first computer the internet was first developed by the military

bull In 1968 the US Department of Defense set up the internet (a network that links computers around the world to exchange information) to communicate while in other parts of the world

bull In the 1980s colleges and universities began using the internet for updated research information

bull Then it became available to everyday Americans in 1992 with the development of the World Wide Web (the Web for short)

bull All of a sudden Americans started spending their time ldquosurfing the webrdquo to communicate research and shop

bull The web allows quick communication through electronic mail (email)

bull Email allows people to send documents pictures sounds and videos to each other instantly through cyberspace (the virtual world of networked computers) we do not have to wait on the postal service anymore

bull The web also allows us to do business called electronic commerce (eCommerce) by allowing the buying and selling of goods though a network

bull People all over the world are on the World Wide Web and because of the internet the world seems much smaller than it used to

bull Can you imagine your life without the web
