Family Owned & Operated Since 1980 I was talking to a friend of mine the other day about running. We talked treadmill versus
track, distances and times.
Twenty minutes into it she casually
mentioned that she runs not to lose
weight or get stronger but to better
manage her stress level. (She said the
more kids she had, the longer the distances she needed to run.)
I’m not sure why that surprised me so much, but it did. I just
assumed that she ran for the sake of her tness – not her sanity.
That made me think of my job and you readers. All of you
reading this are somehow interested in home improvement.
There’s at least one aspect of your home that you are thinking
of changing, in either small or substantial ways. But what
I’d love to know is the reason why? What’s causing you to
think about making these changes? Because you may need to
remind yourself of that reason as you continue on your home
improvement journey. It’s too easy to get hung up on which
exact shade of eggshell you particularly like…when really, you’re
getting ready to sell it to someone else!
Speaking of making home improvement decisions, the best way
to do that is to talk to an expert, which you can do this month
at the Fall Atlanta Home Show. Check out our guide on page 43
for more information and make sure you look for the “Visit our
Booth #” shout outs that are sprinkled in the ads throughout this
issue to plan your show route before you get there.
I also want to draw your attention to some other fantastic
articles we are featuring in this month’s issue. On page 59, we
are giving you the lowdown on the trees of Atlanta. We even
provide you a list of URLs where you can nd out the codes you
need to be aware of when you are planting or removing trees in
your own backyard. Then on page 22, we talk about all the cool,
new innovations in countertops and cabinetry. Finally, we cover
very important but often-neglected areas of our homes: your
entryway and staircases, on page 34. There are some intriguing
new trends and designs that can help your home make a great
impact – right from the minute your guests walk through your
front door.
But no matter what area of your home you are focused on lately,
take time to reect on the “reason why.” Maybe you are getting
ready for a new baby or are getting ready to sell your home.
You might just be tired of your bathroom color or you might be
moving your sweet mother-in-law in. When you think about it,
what we’re talking about isn’t just home improvement. It’s life
improvement. And we can help.

Letter from the president/founder
It’s Great to be Home!In 2001, I started Atlanta Home Improvement
magazine. When I sold it at the end of 2005,
I did not expect to be back. I spent a few
years pursuing other business interests,
including launching Home Improvement
magazines in other markets and, in
2009, launching Best Self Atlanta,
a health, beauty and tness
magazine which is going strong!
But as we all know, life can
be funny sometimes. Now in
addition to my Best Self Atlanta
family, I am returning to Atlanta
Home Improvement alongside Patti
Stephens, Jennifer Prins, David
Leonard, Dona Halliday and the
rest of the amazing team. I
could not be happier to see old
friends and meet new ones as I
immerse myself back into the
world of home improvement!
As we head into the new
year, we plan to reignite the
home improvement industry
with renewed energy, a
fresh perspective and new
products and platforms. We
look forward to sharing our
ideas with you and bringing
you all the best resources and
connections to help turn your
home improvement dreams into
reality.

Flooring has long been one of the most impactful
ways to change the look of your home. New ooring
can also be an extremely cost-effective way to
update and transform your space.
For many years, however, hardwoods in basements
were not an option for homeowners. Installation
of nail-down ooring is impossible on a concrete
slab, so homeowners were left with limited options
– until now. Timberclick, also known as “oating”

Floor & Decor. The boards are locked together and

anchoring the hardwood boards in place.
“Contractors and homeowners love this product.
The product is 100% solid hardwood and the
simple, locking technique makes installation up
to three times faster than solid tongue & groove,”
says designer Sue Rittenberg. There is no need for
glue or nails, so installation is mess-free and can
be installed over most existing oors. The product
comes in many different styles and colors, so
homeowners’ choices are virtually limitless.
And don’t assume that the amazing technology

Momma’s Kitchen
New, uber-organized cabinets and crave-worthy countertops
By Kathy Kantorski
YOUR
A singular buzzword permeated the conference,
expo and event scene at this year’s Kitchen
and Bath Industry Show. It denes the ideal
American kitchen and bath and can be interpreted in a
myriad of ways. The word is: clean. It refers to the clean
lines in a contemporary space or simply keeping the
room free from clutter and dirt. Clean reigns supreme
in today’s kitchens and baths.
Cabinet creationsIt used to be that closed-off storage spaces, like kitchen cabinets,
were used to hide messy-looking piles of pots, lids, pans, dry
goods, cleaning supplies, small appliances … you name it, our
mothers and grandmothers shoved it behind the cabinet door.
But no more! Modern-day cabinetry is almost as aesthetically
pleasing on the inside as it is on the outside, thanks to the
organizing gadgets and gizmos from manufacturers like Rev-
A-Shelf, Glideware, The Pull-Out Shelf Company and more. And
fortunately, you don’t have to remodel your entire kitchen to
install most organizers. Your existing cabinets can be retrotted
1MasterBrand Cabinets’ Lazy Susan offers the typical spin-and-nd function and also features a center-pullout where you can store your most-
used items.
2Häfele’s Smart Cab Storage System is gaining popularity. It’s designed to t in a 15- or 18-inch base cabinet with a drawer above,
and homeowners can congure the storage space to match their needs with a variety of shelves and applications including a spice shelf, a baking sheet and wrap holder, utensil and knife storage and more.
3Rev-A-Shelf came up with the idea to create canned-goods storage by tilting a shelf and installing a shoe rail at the bottom, so cans can
roll to the front and easily stack on top/behind each other.
4Häfele’s undersink mat protects your cabinets from leaks by collecting in its dimples up to one gallon of water in a six-square-foot space.
5The Docking Drawer by JTech Solutions can charge personal electronic devices while hidden from sight. “We’ve been putting outlets
into drawers for a while now, but with conduit,” says Becky Sue Becker, CMKBD, CAPS, owner and principal designer with Designs by BSB in Lawrenceville. “This system does the same thing but in a much smaller footprint so it’s not as cumbersome.” —Becky Sue Becker, CMKBD, CAPS, Designs by BSB

The lines within this woody limestone island surface perfectly mimic actual wood grain. La Parla Venata quartzite covers the perimeter of the space, complementing the wood centerpiece, as does the warm color palette in the Vibe Parker Mosaic backsplash, which was installed by Builders Floor Covering & Tile.
Floating Concrete
By: Pipa Bradbury Design
Pipa Bradbury Ginschel’s design concept for Hettich America’s display kitchen in Buford was to have the appearance of “oating” surfaces. “To accentuate the different planes intersecting, I created shadow lines by oating one plane off another,” she explains. “I also oated a piece of sealed reclaimed oak off the concrete to create a table.” The half-inch-thick concrete surface in a “heather” color was made and installed by Bradley Hughes Atlanta. “They came out and made templates of the space so they could pour the concrete tops and nish with a sealer prior to the install,” Bradbury Ginschel explains.

A woodland theme runs throughout this Atlanta-area outdoor kitchen. It’s in the dark-wood arbor that echoes the nearby tree trunks. It’s also in the tree-ring-like veins running throughout the large agstone countertop used for the kitchen’s eat-in island.

Many older homes seem designed to hustle visitors from the
front door straight to the living or family room without ever
encouraging them to linger in the entryway. After all, this
utilitarian space usually didn’t have much to offer in the way
of hospitality or aesthetics. But modern homeowners are beginning to dress
up their entryways, staircases and railings in pause-worthy new ways.
Make An EntranceThese days, foyers have taken on a more prominent role in the overall décor
of the home. “Homeowners are treating the entryway more as a part of
the home instead of just a pass-through space to get into the home,” says
Brandie Stoeck, design consultant and owner of Stoeck Designs in Marietta.
“Foyers had been used mainly for hanging coats, housing the vacuum in the
closet or a place to just drop shoes. Now they are setting the stage for the
look and feel of the home, telling a brief story of the people who live there as
well as becoming a working, functional space.”
To accomplish this in your own home, Stoeck suggests incorporating a pop
of color or even some patterns. “Entryways are a good place to introduce
pattern. For example… with wallpaper. Yes, I did just say wallpaper. This
product has changed so much over the years. For example, it has become
easier to remove and now it offers so many options in patterns. Great metal
foils, current and modern patterns (i.e. trellis) and bold colors. Sherwin
Williams and Candice Olson both have some very nice collections.”

Stoeck also recommends adding a personal touch
to the space by displaying family photos or original
art. “I think any photo of the family in the entryway
also conveys a welcome to visitors,” she says.
Another key feature of a welcoming entryway is
proper lighting. “The ceiling/chandelier light is
usually too weak compared to the size of space it
is supposed to illuminate,” Stoeck says. To combat
this, she suggests a larger ceiling or chandelier light
that will suffuse the space with adequate lighting.
Also, wall sconces can be used to supplement the
overhead light. “Having all the lights on separate
switches with dimmers gives diversity to whatever
lighting the homeowner wants for different
occasions,” Stoeck says.
When deciding how to decorate your entryway,
rst evaluate how you want to use the space and
what style will incorporate that goal, Stoeck says.
“Do they want more storage? Do they want more
seating? Will this become a mini photo/art display
area?” The answers to these questions can help
guide your overall design project.
Step Up with StyleJust like the entryway, the staircase has primarily
served as more of a functional asset of the home
and less as a design feature. However, more and
more stairways are beginning to fuse form with
function to create some truly stunning designs.
“The railings and stairs usually are a very visible
and central feature in today’s home and can make
a strong statement about the quality of the home and
the homeowner’s personal style,” says Patricia Brown of
Patricia Brown Builders, Inc.
When dressing up your stairway, Stoeck and Brown both
remind homeowners to keep the overall design in line with
the style of the rest of the home. But no need to play it too
safe, Stoeck says, “This area should be a design element of the
home. However, it should also be a space where the envelope
can be pushed slightly from the rest of the décor of the home.”
For example, if the stairs include carpet, skip the oor
covering used in the rest of the house and opt for
something a bit different. “If you have to use a runner
or carpet on the stairs, this is a great way to incorporate
saturated color or a pattern,” Stoeck says. “The carpet itself
can be very different from standard wall-to-wall carpet. It
can be made of durable jute, include colored tape borders
or even large nail trim.”
Some homeowners may even choose to replace
carpeted stairs with hardwood treads. “It is usually quite
easily accomplished,” Brown says. “Depending on the
conguration of the stairs, the underlying treads can be
removed and replaced with hardwood treads and risers in
about one to two days.”
Dramatic lighting also can contribute to a more beautiful
stairway. “Today’s homeowner has many choices when it
comes to lighting the staircase, and we are seeing them
exercise those options,” Brown says. These options include
natural light from skylights or windows placed in the
stairway, chandeliers, wall sconces, LED light strips placed
under the lip of the stairs, and lights placed low along the
wall of the stairway.
On a Rail Of course, simply dressing up a stair railing can go a long
way in improving the style of the overall stairway. One of
the most popular improvement trends involves painting
or staining the railing. “Staining the handrail a darker or
different color than the ooring has been very popular as
it breaks up the stain color, lending interest in the overall
look,” Stoeck says. “If you have white wooden spindles and
want to keep them white but you still want to change the
overall appearance, then staining the handrail very dark
will give a dramatic new look. And it’s inexpensive too.”

Changing out the spindles
also can provide an entirely
new look to a stairway. For
instance, swapping wood
spindles to metal spindles
can make a major impact,
but rst make sure it still
blends in with the overall
style of the home. “If you
are switching over from
wood spindles to metal,
keep in mind the holes left
from the wood spindles
are larger. This means
that once metal spindles
are installed a ‘foot’ will
need to be incorporated to
cover the bottom of each
spindle,” Stoeck says.
If your home has a more
contemporary style,
consider metal and glass
to complement the wood
of the stairs. “We’ve seen
glass, metal and wood
interact in such a way that
the staircase appears to
oat in the opening,” Brown
says. “Clear glass railings
help to keep things looking
uncomplicated and free-
owing.”
Keep in mind when
planning your staircase and
railing design that these
elements also must meet
safety and building codes.
“Stairs and railings are one
item in today’s home that
receive extra scrutiny when
it comes to code compliance
issues,” Brown says. “Safety concerns drive everything in
stair and railing design, including consistent riser heights,
handrail proles that make them easy to grasp, spacing
limits of balusters, adequate lighting and railing heights.
Just to name a few!”
Transforming your entryway, staircase and railings from
pure function to stylish form could go a long way in
completing the overall style and décor of your home. Once
you do, you’ll nd that you – and your guests – stop rushing
through your entryway. They’ll instead be tempted to relax,
linger and admire.

Meet Ahmed Hassan At the age of 10, Ahmed discovered his love of gardening and working outdoors. To many, mowing lawns, trimming shrubs and stacking wood would be considered mundane chores. Not to Ahmed. Each completed task moved him closer to his purpose in life: Teaching others the importance of hard work and how to creatively co-exist with nature. Ahmed’s love of landscaping paved the way to a successful career as one of today’s most sought after celebrity landscapers and green experts.
Hassan is best known as the original host of DIY Network’s “Yard Crashers.” Following a series of hosting stints for numerous DIY Network television shows including “The Dirt On...,” “Green Me Up,” and “Blog Cabin,” the network created Yard Crashers to showcase Ahmed’s high energy, motivational spirit and love for everything green.
Ahmed Hassan is an accredited landscape Design/Build, Contractor, Home Improvement Salesperson and Certified Landscape Maintenance Technician.
The connective thread through each stage of his life remains Problem Solving, Construction and Landscaping. “Creating beautiful spaces outdoors is what I do!” says Ahmed. Ahmed, his wife and three children currently reside in Northern California.

In the Company of
TreesChoosing the right tree
for your yardBy Margaret Price
Stately maples, towering pines and sturdy
oaks are valuable assets for the Atlanta
homeowner. They provide shade and beauty
while offering cool spots to relax and play
in the yard. Fragrant spring blossoms and vibrant
fall foliage can also brighten up an otherwise dark
corner of the landscape. Trees do so much for our
outdoor life – and making the right choice is the rst
step in ensuring a healthy yard full of gorgeous trees.
From when to plant to how to choose a responsible
arborist, here’s a primer on all things tree.
Growing on YouChoosing the right tree is the rst step in guring
out what you’re trying to accomplish. “You cannot go
wrong by consulting the Georgia Gold Medal Plants
list,” says Mary Kay Woodworth, executive director of
Georgia Urban Ag Council. “These plants are selected
annually to be proven winners for Georgia’s climate,
soils and disease/pest resistance.”

Popular species include: American Hornbeam – A great alternative to the Bradford
Pear, the American Hornbeam has a broad, oval growth habit
and can reach 30 to 40 feet high and 30 feet wide when
mature. Dense foliage casts cooling shade in summer, then
turns a lively shade of yellow or orange in autumn to brighten
the landscape. This tree is sometimes called “Ironwood”
because of its very hard wood and dark red twigs.
Bald Cypress – A Native American tree with a wide growing
range, the Bald Cypress is a common wetland plant and
a deciduous conifer. This tree can reach 70 feet or more
at maturity. (So it is best used in large, open spaces.) Its
soft-textured, at needles
transform from yellow-green
in spring, to bright green in
summer turning to bronze-
orange in fall.
Chastetree – A heat-tolerant
and cold-hardy tree, the
Chastetree also has great
pest resistance and excellent
drought tolerance. Often
known as summer lilac, it
owers in May and June
with minimum maintenance
requirements. Flowers may be blue, lavender, pink or white.
Chastetree grows 15 to 20 feet tall with an equal spread.
Little Gem Magnolia – A classically Southern tree, Little Gem
Magnolia is smaller than its native parent, reaching a height
of 15 to 20 feet in maturity with a 10 foot width. Leaves are
four to six inches long and dark glossy green. Its fragrant
owers bloom in summer through early fall.
Overcup Oak – Typically growing 50 feet high and 50 feet
wide, the Overcup Oak grows more quickly compared to
most oaks and is better suited for large landscapes. Its
name is derived from the unique shape of its acorns and is
similar to the white oak in many ways, including its rough-
textured, gray-brown bark and yellow color in autumn. “If
you want to create a natural area in the back of your yard
to reduce maintenance, then you want to go with native
canopy trees that can ll in to help bring back more of the
natural woodland, like an oak,” says Eric King, principal, King
Landscaping in Atlanta.
Trident Maple – Introduced from China in 1890, the Trident
Maple is an excellent small shade tree that brings vibrant colors
in the fall. “It’s a nice size for a residential home,” King says. “It’s
not as big as a red maple, but it’s bigger than a japanese maple
so it doesn’t dwarf a house and
make it feel small.”
Now that you have a sense of
which trees go where, consider
the characteristics of your yard.
“Is it already shady?” asks King.
“Then you’ll probably want a
tree that will grow in shade
like a dogwood or a redbud; if
there’s a lot of sun then you’ll
want a tree that thrives in a
sunny condition like a crepe
myrtle or a owering magnolia. If your yard is very wet
(near a creek or river) you might want a tree that likes wet
conditions, like a river birch or a red maple.”
Trees do more than just spruce up your landscape. If lots
of shade is what you seek, trees can provide a cooling
effect and offer environmental benets when strategically
placed. They can minimize air pollution, improve soil
and water quality and increase curb appeal. (All while
reducing energy use by up to 30 percent, according to
the U.S. Department of Energy.) Shade trees are vital to

our environment for several
reasons—one of these being
the shade that they provide.
“Humans and animals both
need the shade to protect
from the damaging exposure
of prolonged direct sun,” says
Dixie Speck, President of
Solterra Landscape in Atlanta.
“The shade also helps to keep
a structure, such as a home
or ofce building, cooler. It
also protects from the exterior
damage caused by direct sun
exposure. The best shade
trees are the ones that grow
large and quickly so that
their shading benets can
be experienced sooner than
later…and ones that have a
long lifespan.”
Mark Livingstone, Senior Consulting Arborist at Arborguard
Tree Specialists, advises: “With a shady yard, you want to go
with an understory tree or an ornamental. Dogwoods love to
be underneath large trees that will provide them shade, as
well as some maples varieties. If you have a large spacious
yard with plenty of sunlight, then you may want to go with
an evergreen or an oak. Look for locations to plant dominant
trees where they can shade plants that are receiving too much
sun, or shade your home or patio.”
Digging inThe best time to plant trees is in the fall once temperatures
have cooled down to around the sixties or lower at night.
Trees can also be planted during the winter. When planting
any tree, the holes should be dug approximately twice the
size of the root ball or container to give the roots room to
grow. It is not a bad idea to put rock in the bottom of the
holes to allow for water to drain from the roots. Some trees,
although they love water, do not like to sit in it.
Trees need regular, deep watering (by rain or irrigation or
hand-watering) just like any other plant, especially during
the rst two years of establishment. “If planting during the
heat of the spring or summer, watering is needed every day
for the initial two to three weeks following planting,” Speck
says. Keep approximately three inches of natural mulch over
the root zone of trees to conserve moisture and insulate the
roots from temperature extremes. Be careful not to apply
more than three inches of mulch. This can suffocate the tree.
Fertilize at least once per year and consult your local nursery
for plant-specic requirements.
Whether you’re pruning for aesthetic reasons, to thin the
canopy of your yard or just to make the tree better, choose
an arborist or a tree company who knows how to prune
without damaging the tree. If you choose to do it yourself
you can nd good resources through University of Georgia’s
Cooperative Extension service*. Keep trees trimmed regularly
to help lessen the weight of the branches and to prevent
drooping. Trimming will also help maintain the shape of the
tree. “Generally if you’re cutting to remove a limb completely,
you want to cut it back close to the trunk but leave a little
circle of growth, called the collar,” says King. “Don’t remove
more than 20 percent of the canopy at any one time.” Staking
trees can prevent them from blowing over in a heavy wind
and helps train them to grow.
Down with diseaseTo identify diseases, rst gure out what type of tree you’re
dealing with and work backward from any symptoms that
appear. “There’s a cool app out there called Leafsnap where
you can take a picture of a leaf and it will help you identify
what type of tree it is,” says King. Start by looking at any
changes to either the bark or the leaves over past years. Trees
naturally have some pests that are part of their life cycle and
don’t negatively impact the tree other than cosmetically, like
oakworms and galls, but if you don’t really notice it and it’s
not severely affecting the tree then it’s best to let it go. Other
pests might require treatment, like mushrooms on the trunk.
If you see those growing, then it’s probably time to call an
arborist to come out and take a look.
Branching outTrees need regular check-ups, just like people. Don’t wait
until a tree dies to call an arborist. “If something is not quite
right, or you notice a difference in the plant that you haven’t
seen before,” says Livingstone, “it’s time to have someone
come out and diagnose the situation. You have a much

better chance of saving the plant the quicker you let an expert
know. Most homeowners wait until there are obvious signs of
a problem and by then there is little that can be done.”
Tree Do’sDo design and place trees with mature growth
size in mind, allowing room for canopy
and roots to spread. “The biggest mistake
that homeowners make is to select a tree
that, when mature, will be too large for the
site and is planted too close to the house,”
Woodworth says.
Do be aware of roof lines, power lines,
concrete patios and walkways. Large trees
with invasive root structures can damage
building foundations, paving, plumbing
and drainage systems. An improperly
placed tree can result in costly long-term
maintenance and repair situations that
may outweigh the energy efciency gains.
Do use a diversity of trees instead of one or
two varieties—it’s not only better for the eco-
system and the animals that rely on what
the tree produces, but it also reduces the
chance of one pest killing all the same type
of tree.
As far as trees are concerned, the sky’s the limit, says
Woodworth. “There is a tree that can t any size landscape
or courtyard garden. Once planted, watered regularly and
pruned as needed, maintenance is minimal.”

November is Men’s Health Awareness month, otherwise known as “Movember.” It is a worldwide movement that started in Australia to bring men’s health issues to the forefront. Men across the globe begin

The Rule of Three. Recognize that
there are three aspects to every
job: speed, cost and quality. You are
entitled to any two. But you may not
expect all three. If circumstances
demand speed you must either pay
the requisite price or sacrice quality.
If you demand the highest quality,
then either cost or timeliness must
suffer the consequences. Skimping on
money almost always impacts quality.
The Budget Balance Beam. There are
two ways to present your project to
your potential contractor for a bid.
First, you plan out every aspect of the
job in excruciating detail. You want to
make sure, as much as possible, there
is no room for misunderstanding on
the part of client or contractor. Then
you ask, “How much?”
Another way to approach it is to pile
all of your designated funds in a large
paper bag, note the absolute total,
then provide the applicant contractor
with a general idea of what you
desire. Then disclose how much you
can spend and ask, “What can you
do?”
The rst method is far superior
but, if you are easily pleased, the
second approach frees you from
much anxiety —without, however,
freeing you from one iota of
ultimate responsibility. All actions
require choices, all choices have
consequences. (Ain’t it fun?)

The other day a homeowner called, asking if I would come inspect her just-installed deck. She had some concerns because the deck was moving. The rest of the call went like this:
Me: Did you have a permit taken out? Her: No, the contractor told me I did not need one.
Me: Do you have a contract? Her: No, we made a deal and I paid cash and got a much better price.
Me: Do you have a scope of work? Her: No, everything that we did was verbal and the contractor assured me that he would build the deck to meet code requirements.
I hesitated as to whether or not I even wanted to get involved, but the homeowner pleaded with me to come. When I got there, I found it to be one of the nest-looking decks that I had seen in a long time. The workmanship on the surface was excellent and the attention to detail was top notch. The issues only surfaced once I got underneath the deck and started to look at the structure. The homeowner then admitted that they opted not to take down the 20-year-old structural support and oor system, in order to save money.
The contractor had used new material on top of old material! Work progressed without a permit and compliance was not followed.
The homeowner is now in a quandary. They still owed a balance of money but the deck is not considered safe. Now the homeowner will go through the frustration of trying to deal with this contractor and possibly end up in a courtroom! They will likely spend even more money to nish this deck. Had they hired the right contractor from the very beginning, they would have a safe deck, at a fair price.
If a contractor tells you that a permit isn’t required, that could be a red ag. If he is then prepared to take cash and reduce his price, that could be a second ag. Choose your contractor wisely. More often than not, the seemingly “least expensive” ends up being the most expensive.

Expert Q&A

Q: How can I make my outdoor space feel more polished and ready for entertaining?
As homeowners begin to think of their outdoor spaces as an extension of their homes, it is important to think about how your design choices can ow seamlessly from the indoors out. When thinking about this transition, consider several design elements to accomplish this.
Mix textures and patterns: Just as homeowners are getting more adventurous with their color choices indoors, we are also seeing mixing and matching in outdoor rooms growing in popularity. Match outdoor accessories with the style of your home’s interior for a sense of ow between indoor and outdoor living areas. Add an all-weather rug in a coordinating color to make your space cozy and comfortable.
Light up your lawn: Lighting is a crucial element to create a sense of space, especially when transitioning from the indoors out. Highlight your hedges, trees and owers with solar accent lights to make your outdoor space stand out at night. Or, add lanterns and string lights for
a fun nishing touch.—Sarah Fishburne is the

Design for The Home

Paintings and pottery and sculptures – oh my! This Labor Day weekend, check
out some of Atlanta’s local artists at Art in the Park in Marietta. The festival
takes place over three days and features a gallery of children’s art, exhibitions
from locally and nationally known artisans, and a market where art will be
sold for purchase. Come celebrate art, in all its forms (including woodworking
and jewelry-making, among many, many others.) To learn more about this
event, visit ArtParkMarietta.com.

Momma’s Kitchen
New, uber-organized cabinets and crave-worthy countertops
By Kathy Kantorski
YOUR
A singular buzzword permeated the conference,
expo and event scene at this year’s Kitchen
and Bath Industry Show. It de nes the ideal
American kitchen and bath and can be interpreted in a
myriad of ways. The word is: clean. It refers to the clean
lines in a contemporary space or simply keeping the
room free from clutter and dirt—clean reigns supreme
in today’s kitchens and baths.
Cabinet creationsIt used to be that closed-off storage spaces, such as kitchen
cabinets, were used to hide messy-looking piles of pots, lids,
pans, dry goods, cleaning supplies, small appliances … you
name it, our mothers and grandmothers shoved it behind the
cabinet door.
But no more! Modern-day cabinetry is almost as aesthetically
pleasing on the inside as it is on the outside, thanks to the
organizing gadgets and gizmos from manufacturers like Rev-A-
Shelf, Glideware, The Pull-Out Shelf Company, and more. And
fortunately, you don’t have to remodel your entire kitchen to
install most organizers. Your existing cabinets can be retro tted
