The Royal Calcutta GolfClub, established in 1829, is the oldest golfclub in India and thefirst outside Great Britain. The highest, at Gulmarg (altitude 2,700 meters) in Kashmir.

Over 50% ofthe golfcourses are 18-holecourses, 40-45% are 9-hole facilities, while there are just a few courses in India havingmore than 18 holes.

golfcourses follow the originallandscape, some modification is unavoidable. Bunkersand sand traps are almost always artificial, although other hazards may be natural.

Environmental concerns over the use ofland for golfcourses have grownover the pastfifty years. Specific issues include the amount ofwater and chemical pesticides and

fertilizers used for maintenance, as well as the destructionofwetlands and otherenvironmentally important areas during construction.

However, in several golfclubsforeigners are allowed to play for a greenfee even ifthey are notaccompanied by a member. Furthermore, the approximately 7,500lifetime members ofthe IndianGolfUnion are allowed to play on all thegolfcourses by paying stipulated greenfees

Golfcourse revenues comprise the following main components:membership fees, greenfees, revenue from food and beverage, pro-shop,and others (e.g. sponsorship, lease income, etc).

In terms ofrevenue structure, two-thirds ofthe total revenues aregenerated by membership fees, with around 17% coming from greenfees.Food and beverage revenues account for about 6% ofthe total revenues.
