    M ultiple-choice Question Formats

y MCQs are one of the most common formats in professionally-developed language tests.

y They are widely used to assess learning at the recall and

comprehension levels (Coombe Folse & Hubley , 2007)y There are many advantages associated with the MCQ.

y they are very reliable because if written well , there is only one correctanswer.

y they are quick and easy to mark and thereby deemed very practical from aT s perspective.

y They can be used to assess knowledge at various levels from beginning toadvanced.

y Ss from most parts of the world are familiar with the format.

Conclusiony Although once viewed as an enabling skill of secondary importance to

the four main language skills , vocabulary instruction has now come intoits own.

    y

As such , it is crucial that this important language development skill isassessed validly and reliably.y To accomplish this , several important issues need to be taken into

account and decisions need to be made about how best to assessvocabulary in the classroom.

y Whatever decision is made , however , Ts must strive to make theirvocabulary assessment varied and meaningful.
