On26September2014,RickWhiteheadpostedontheUkuleleSouthAustraliaFacebook(FB)page‘I’mjustfloatingthisideaandwouldwelcomeanyfeedback.WithgrowingnumbersparticipatinginplayingukuleleinAdelaideIthinkthatweshouldtrytodosomethingtogether…atleastonceayear…tosharethejoyandspreadtheword…andmaybeasaukulelecommunityhelpothersaswell.It’sbeenmentionedbeforebutIreallyliketheideaofanAdelaideukulelepicnicsomewhere….’

Rickstarted‘TheGreatAdelaideUkulelePicnic’Facebookpageon29September2014.ByNovember2014thePicnicsitehadattractedovera100membersandtodayboastsover450members,mostofwhomarefromtheSouthAustralianukulelecommunity.

‘TheidealofTheGreatAdelaideUkulelePicnicistounitetheSouthAustralianukulelecommunityinthecelebrationoftheukeforthebenefitofall’wasRick’sfirstpostonthepageandsetthesceneforaninclusivecommunityevent.HissecondpostwastopubliclyacknowledgeNinaWaveswho‘sowedtheseedandsuggestedthegreattitlefortheevent’(FB29/9/2014).

Rick,withtheassistanceofAlUptonandothermembersofthelocalukulelecommunity,organisedthefirstGreatAdelaideUkulelePicnic,heldonSunday,7thDecember2014inRymillPark,Adelaide–thefirstSundayofsummer.

Sixukulelegroupsvolunteeredtoleadfivesongseachfora‘Jam-A-Long’atthePicnicandchosetheirsongsfromRichardG’sUkuleleSongbookwebsite.

AlUptonpreparedtheartworkfortheSongBookandpublicity,andmanagedthePicnicFBpage,providingdetailedinformationonthemorepracticalsideofthings.

SharonMossfromJumpin’FleaMusicAccessoriesgenerouslydonatedacommemorativeKalasprucetoptenortravellerukuleleforasilentauctionwhichwasconductedonFBwithproceedsgoingtowardthecostsofrunningthePicnic.

Thedaywasaperfectearlysummerday,nottoohotorcold.MegRileyMC’dtheeventwithstyleandmorethan300people,withukesinhand,attendedthePicnic.Atotalof$892.80wasraisedonthedayfortheWomen’sandChildren’sHospitalFoundationtosupporttheirnewukuleleprogram.

Basedonthesuccessofthe2014Picnic,thedatefornextTheGreatAdelaideUkulelePicnicwassetforSunday6thDecember2015onceagaininRymillPark.Thepark’smanytreesprovidedampleshademakingthelocationperfectforsuchanevent.

ThirteenukulelegroupsputuptheirhandstoleadsongsforthePicnicandtheMarilynJettySwimmerswereintroducedtolead‘ABicycleBuiltforTwo’whichwaslaterusedfortheTourrificProspectGuinnessWorkRecordUkuleleChallengeheldinearly2016.

JacarandaMusicdonatedaKala8stringtenorukuleletoberaffledpriortothePicnicwiththeluckyrecipientreceivinghisprizeatthepicnic.

Adelaideexperiencedunseasonallyextremehotweatheronthedayofthepicnicandmanywhohadplannedtoattendchosenotto,includingafullbusloadfromGoolwa.Toaccommodatetheconditionsthepicnicprogramwasshortenedtoreduceexposuretothe40+degreeAdelaideheat.Itwaswonderfultoseethataround200stoicukersbravedtheheat.Justover$600wasraisedforthechosencharityCanTeen.TheSAWaterQuenchBenchwasahugehitontheday!

Thisyear,withRymillParkbeingredevelopedduetotheO-Bahnextension,theUkulelePicnichasmovedtoStHelensParkinProspect–aukulelefriendlyzone.EighteenukulelegroupsfromacrossthestatewillleadsongsatthePicnicandJacarandaMusichasonceagaingenerouslydonatedaKalatenorukuleletoassistwithfinance.

TheGreatAdelaideUkulelePicnicremainsanon-profitevent,bringingtogethertheSouthAustralianukulelecommunityonasummer’safternooninaparktoenjoy6hoursofpeace,loveandukulele!
