ARRL Midwest Division Newsletter October 2014 ARRL Midwest Division Vice Director Position Open Jan. 1 When Cliff Ahrens, K0CA, announced that he was not running for re-election, I submitted a nomination petition for Director. As it turned out, I was the only nomination and no one submit- ted a nomination for Vice-Director. This resulted in my being declared elected and a new Vice- Director will be appointed by ARRL President Kay Craigie, N3KN. In this situation it is custom- ary for the new director to recommend a Vice-Director candidate to the President. Therefore, if you are interested in serving the ARRL members of the Midwest Division as Vice- Director for 2015-2018, please send me your amateur radio resume. Also contact me or Cliff to discuss the role and responsibilities and any questions you might have. Some factors that will influence my recommendation are: A candidate with a broad range of interests and activities in Amateur Radio - especially those that don't overlap my own. Significant geographical separation from eastern Iowa to better cover ARRL sponsored hamfests and to facilitate contact and discussion with division members. A genuine desire and dedication to work at furthering ARRL and Amateur Radio. Previous or current ARRL volunteer position(s). In addition there are a few mandatory qualifications for the Vice Director position: At least 21 years old A licensed and full member of ARRL for at least the last four years Serve without compensation (certain out-of-pocket expenses are reimbursed) Provide information relative to any potential conflict of interest (at later date on an ARRL provided form) I would like to receive your inputs by November 10th. ARRL Midwest Division Vice Director Position Open Jan. 1

When Cliff Ahrens, K0CA, announced that he was not running for re-election, I submitted a nomination petition for Director. As it turned out, I was the only nomination and no one submit-ted a nomination for Vice-Director. Significant geographical separation from eastern Iowa to better cover ARRL sponsored hamfests and to facilitate contact and discussion with division members.

A genuine desire and dedication to work at furthering ARRL and Amateur Radio.

In addition there are a few mandatory qualifications for the Vice Director position:

HR 4969 Midwest Division Co-Sponsors

I want to offer my sincere thanks to hams throughout our Midwest Division who contacted their Members of Congress encouraging them to support and co-sponsor HR 4969, The Amateur Radio Parity Act of 2014. This bill calls on the FCC to apply the PRB-1 “reasonable accommo-dation” three-part test to private land-use restrictions regarding antennas. Your letters, phone calls, emails, and visits to District offices effectively communicated the importance of this legis-lation to the volunteer emergency communications and public service that Amateur Radio pro-vides to our country and many served agencies. In addition, several ARRL officers and direc-tors, along with The Keelen Group, the League’s lobbyists, visited dozens of congressional offices in September.

There are currently 47 co-sponsors signed on to HR 4969, with another half-dozen or so who have agreed to do so when Congress returns to Washington in November, after the election recess.

HR 4969 co-sponsors from our Midwest Division currently include: Lee Terry (NE-2), Sam Graves (MO-6), Lynn Jenkins (KS-2), Vicky Hartzler (MO-4), Blaine Luetkemeyer (MO-3), Kev-in Yoder (KS-3), and Jeff Fortenberry (NE-1).

If your Member of Congress is listed above, please take the time to thank them for their sup-port of HR 4969.

Even if your Representative is not yet signed on as a co-sponsor, we greatly appreciate your efforts in educating Congress on the importance of HR 4969, and in establishing relationships with our elected officials which not only got out our message, but may pay dividends in the fu-ture.

ARRL President Kay Craigie emphasized that HR 4969 is still “very much alive” and she urged ARRL members to continue to contact your Representatives to urge them to co-sponsor HR 4969.

Bill Caldwell N0LNO/R and his 2nd op Rod Blocksome K0DAS, and Gregg Lind, KC0SKM/R and his 2nd op, Christopher Caldwell, KC0YGW enjoyed the September VHF QSO Party.

Both Rovers carried 7 bands, 50 through 2304 MHz, SSB and CW, all horizontally polarized. Gregg’s Rover antenna configuration was the same whether he was “on the go” or stopped. Bill’s Rover had two antenna configurations – small omni-directional antennas for 50, 144, 222, & 432 MHz while on the go and long high gain yagis on a transportable rotatable mast when they were stopped.

Cliff’s Notes

Congratulations to Matt Anderson KA0BOJ on his re-election as ARRL Nebraska Section Manager.

Kudos to the Rockwell-Collins Amateur Radio Club of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on their be-coming an ARRL Affiliated Club.

There will be two ARRL conventions in Iowa in October, one on each side of the state. On October 5, the ARRL Iowa Section Convention (Southeast Iowa Hamfest) will be held in West Liberty, sponsored by the Muscatine & Washington Area Amateur Radio Clubs. And on October 11, the ARRL Iowa State Convention (Sioux City Ham Convention) will be in Sergeant Bluff, sponsored by the Sooland Amateur Radio Association. This is a great time of year to get out and enjoy the beautiful Fall weather and these conventions, as well as the many other hamfests throughout the Midwest Division, which are listed later in this newsletter.
