Israel is a democratic nation-state whose society is characterized by an increasingly wide range of cultures. It’s an ancient country, and yet a young democratic nation. It’s modern and progressive, a leader in technology and entrepreneurship, while at the same time traditional and protective of customs and rituals. Students will have the opportunity to study the mosaic of diverse cultures and communities that make their home in the modern state of Israel and which provide a unique case study for observation and research.

“ Beer-Sheva is really a cultural Mecca, not a tourist spot to visit these cultures, as in Jerusalem, but a spot where I can live amongst all of these cultures, the only way to understand them.”

– Kevin Schwartz, Cornell University

The Negev Desert, home to Ben-Gurion University, is populated by a variety of religious and ethnic groups that serve as a mirror of Israeli society.

Study at BGU provides students with a multi-faceted understanding of the cultural survival of the different communities within Israel. Issues of key importance to the populations in the Negev region and beyond will be explored, including their historical and political context, educational and social transformations, and state-indigenous relations.

Because of its proximity to indigenous Bedouin communities, the program has the unique ability to incorporate courses that include perspectives from both the cultural and medical anthropology subfields.

BGU is the institution where one can focus on the history and archaeology of the Negev, while gaining a better understanding of the social and cultural trends evident in the archaeological and historical record.
