wWelcome
The mission of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is to serve our patients compassionately and effectively, and to create a healthy future for them and their families. Whether you are referred to the medical center for specialty care, diagnostic testing, out patient treatment, or admission, Beth Israel Deaconess staff will work closely with you and your doctor to coordinate your care. Under your doctor’s guidance, the staff will share and discuss tests, specialists’ opinions, treatment options, and recommended next steps. This ongoing communication among you, your doctor, and Beth Israel Deaconess staff results in the high quality of care that you deserve. Patients come to our medical center from around the corner or around the world. We feel our obligation to provide access to care goes beyond our front doors. For instance, our network includes more than 200 community-based primary care physicians in twenty-three communities throughout Eastern Massachusetts. We also operate regional medical care facilities in Chelsea, Lexington, and Dorchester, and work with hundreds of other physicians throughout the region who choose to refer patients to a Beth Israel
Deaconess specialist for care.

EExpertise
As a major teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, Beth Israel Deaconess is world-renowned for humane patient care, leading biomedical research and excellence in teaching. The medical center offers clinical expertise in the following areas: cardiology, obstetrics, women’s health, orthopedics, cancer care, psychiatry, general surgery, transplant surgery, cardiovascular and thoracic surgery, neurosurgery, neurology, urology, dermatology, and trauma care. Beth Israel Deaconess also features intensive care units for medical and respiratory problems, surgical trauma, coronary care, and neonatal care.
Our Merger
In 1996, Beth Israel Hospital and Deaconess Hospital merged to form Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. The new medical center consists of two companies, East (formerly Beth Israel Hospital) and West (formerly Deaconess Hospital), that function as one entity with one set of values and patient care philosophy. As a patient, you will receive the excellent care for which both former hospitals were long known.

YYour Rights As a Patient
Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center supports the Massachusetts law known as the Patient’s Bill of Rights. This was modeled after the Statement on the Rights of Patients, published by the former Beth Israel Hospital in 1972. The statement emphasizes Beth Israel Deaconess’ commitment to respect every patient’s individuality and dignity, reinforcing the belief that you have the right to know about your illness and to participate in all decisions that affect your well being.
In addition, the Patient’s Bill of Rights underscores your right to confidentiality. Information about your medical condition is confidential and is not released without your consent. For a copy of Your Rights As a Patient, please call Corporate Communications at 617-667-4431. The Massachusetts proxy law allows you to designate an agent or proxy to make decisions for you in the event you are not capable of making them yourself. A copy of the proxy form can be obtained at the Social Work Department by calling 617-667-3421. Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, age, or veteran status. If you feel you have been discriminated against, we have procedures in place to address your concerns. Please call the Office of Health Care Quality at 617-667-2624.

WWhen You Arrive
You will be seen by the triage nurse (one of the registered nurses) who will evaluate the urgency and nature of your illness or injury. If you have a primary care physician, be sure to inform the nurse of your doctor’s name to ensure continuity of care. Whenever possible, you should notify your primary care physician before coming to the Emergency Department. After you are seen by the triage nurse, a member of the registration staff will ask you or someone who is with you for registration information. You will then be seen by a team of healthcare professionals who will assess your condition, order any necessary diagnostic tests, and provide the necessary treatment during your stay. Test results will be discussed with you, and you will be given instructions about follow-up care. When appropriate, your primary care physician will be contacted.
If You Are Admitted
You will be assigned a bed as quickly as possible on the appropriate unit and campus. Please inform the Emergency Department if you were previously treated at the former Beth Israel Hospital (East Campus) or the former Deaconess Hospital (West Campus). This information will allow your care team to access the most current information regarding your condition, and if possible, may enable staff to treat you at the location with which you are familiar. Remember, however, that we are now one combined medical center at both campuses. Once you are transferred to a unit and bed, a new team of providers will continue your day-to-day medical care and decide when you are able to return home. Before you are discharged, you will receive instructions about follow-up care.
