The Design Centre concept was created with the idea of de-signing a commercial space facing the areas of Architecture and Design, but it was also intended to be a place close to other seg-ments of society, such as the cultural and arts sectors.

The term art, from the first architectural development of this volume, means bringing together forms that impress, but at the same time are clean and flexible. After this first impression, the viewer should be able to explore the inner space, where the am-biances are designed to be cafes, a bookstore, an auditorium, clas-srooms, as well as an exhibition area. The purpose of this space is to be a reference for those who are interested in news and informa-tion about these segments, and may wish to confer on new trends and acquire cultural knowledge without moving to large cities, in areas like Southeastern Brazil, which is a pioneer in malls with the-se specifications.

This building is intended to be an architectural landmark in the city, with full thought to “breathing design” using the language of decons-tructionism that is practically unknown in Curitiba. This is also a way to awaken people’s interest in architecture, by showing buildings that can transform the spaces, leaving them with a strong visual image, so that everyone has the desire to see this work, be impressed by it and is attrac-ted to its design.

Although architectural solutions must be created in accordance with the dimensions of the land area and its topography, the space should be designed to allow inte-gration between the various environments and must work in dialogue with the surroundings. The starting point was to concentrate on the shops, cafes and bookstore in the centre ( 1 ) of the ground floor and the first floor, leaving space for movement, whilst giving a view of the surroun-dings ( 2 ).

It is believed that the use of metallic structures, with the flexibility of steel, gives this building balanced movement ( 3 ), whilst the lateral closed structure of steel and glass, would work alongside to provide the much de-sired connection between the internal and external envi-ronments. The auditorium, classrooms and administrative sectors will be located on the first basement level, which will be flooded with an opening of natural lighting.

Glass panels with brise-soleil ( 4 ) covering part of the building will form a sustainable complex that provides better air circulation, excellent use of energy and lower le-vels of artificial light. The land, which occupies an entire block, will take advantage of all four sides of the building.

Sports & Cultural ComplexAcademic Work 2010Curitiba - Brazil Multipurpose Project

This project was based in Curitiba in Brazil, and it focussed on the preparation of a strategic plan for the redevelopment of the city’s Umbará neighbourhood. This area has suffered from a lack of develop-ment in comparison to other districts of the city.

The importance of this project was heightened by the fact that the city is hosting 2014 World Cup matches. The main strand of the scheme centred on the creation of a sports and cultural complex, which was to include a soccer stadium, a range of sporting facilities, restau-rants and hotels. One of the primary goals of the project was to attract inward investment to the area.

I took part in a major study of the region and - along with the rest of my team - decided on the most suitable location for the sports and cultural complex. We wanted to form a clearer picture of the specific needs of the area, so we intended a number of field visits. Thus, it was possible to understand which roads needed improving, which areas required landscaping and where various items of street furniture were to be positioned.

One of the key areas involved in the strategic plan was the study of the main roads and highways, which in-cluded several federal routes. My planning team suggested that the main transport links should be connected to the lo-cal roads in the area - giving people from around the city and beyond better access to the Umbará neighbourhood.

In order to successfully implement the sports and cultural complex, we decided that a bus terminal ( I ) wi-thin walking distance of the facility was essential. We then planned a number of access roads to the terminal, as well as a main road that was designed to link the bus terminal to the main square - along which were to be a gastrono-mic centre ( H )and a community recreation area ( G ). We also decided to make the square ( F ) the central point for the entire development, around which all the main sporting facilities would be located. The initial plan was to make the buildings conducive ( C ) for use by footbal-lers during the World Cup, and then to retrofit them as residential properties afterwards.

Also located within the complex were two hotels ( J ), which would be able to provide accommodation for visiting football teams. The hotels’ proximity to the BR116 highway also meant they would attract visitors to the area for many years after the World Cup.

The stadium was designed to be the focal point of the archi-tectural development of the cultu-ral and sports complex, from which all the other buildings in the pro-ject would take their inspiration.

In terms of the structural elements, we realised that the main pillars should be a maximum of 20 metres apart - the distance allowed for this type of prestressed concre-te in this case. We decided that the construction should feature rein-forced concrete bleachers, as they delivered greater cushioning pro-perties than the other solutions we studied.

Stadium

The stadium was divided into four floors. The grou-nd floor contained media facilities, reception, adminis-tration areas and general amenities for stadium staff. Cafes and retail outlets were located on the first floor, along with access to the lower stands. Restaurants and private boxes were located on the second floor, and broadcasting facili-ties were located on the third floor.

The monitoring of a particular work is ba-sically the technical and administrative manage-ment of the implementation of the project, and I chose this particular field as one of my work ex-perience internships during college.

I quickly realised that the management of the project relied on the accurate adminis-tration of contracts and services relating to the execution of the work. To this end, I discovered which steps were taken to ensure control over the work such as determining that services and works complied with a strict physical and finan-cial schedule. I also discovered how the quantity and quality of materials used, and the amount of hand labour employed in the work was an es-sential factor in the successful completion of the project.

With this experience, I was able to actively partici-pate in some stages of the work which I hope will be an important advantage in my future career. I was involved in the day to day application of a design for two buildings, each an average 20 storey residence. This enabled me to better understand the building process that I first studied in college but was unable to envisage, and allowed me to see for myself the complex stages involved in turning a project into a work being performed.

The Studio Architecture office develops projects from the initial concept to the comple-ted work. The process covers everything from development and layout, technical details such as lighting, and also tracking work in progress with engineers and other construction profes-sionals. The business can also provide finishes such as interior design and decoration, and has tools and programs which can create these in 3D.

I have been involved in several residen-tial and commercial projects with the firm. One of the projects I attended was this residential building with 17 floors that is the start of a de-velopment of three buildings. I was involved in the development of the layout of the floors, and with ensuring that all construction requi-rements and safety, as fire prevention, measu-res were met.

I also participated in a study of the faca-des of the buildings, selecting materials, colou-rs and other details that would be applied. To have a better visualisation of the project, I rea-lised different perspectives in 3D images which realistically presented the possible end results of the work.

I believe that this, and other projects I had a chance to work on in the Studio Arquitetura office will be a great advan-tage to my future career prospects. The opportunity to have di-rect contact with projects that would actually be implemented rather than only on paper was a factor that I found to be highly motivational.

I took on this ambitious interior design project shortly after finishing college and was really im-portant for the start of my career, as I was keen and excited to work on the implementation of a project of mine. The project began with a blank canvas. The apartment was exactly how the builders had left it, so I had a unique opportunity to create a space that was truly original. I wanted to inject my own sense of style into the property - transforming it into a space that I really believe that would be in keeping with the characteristics of the owner.

I was able to work on every as-pect of the project, which included developing an ergonomic layout that made the best possible use of the avai-lable space. I had input on where ligh-ting and electrical fixtures were located, as well as the final decisions on furniture and decor.

I believe that this interior design project was a critical part of my personal development. It gave me the chance to experience how is the day-to-day mana-gement of a process of executing a pro-ject of interior design. I was also handed the opportunity to take responsibility for specific areas of the project, inclu-ding the placement of floor and wall ti-les, the location of furniture and various design decisions. This project has given me a range of skills and experiences that will benefit me throughout my career.
