MORPHOGENIC PAPER FOLDING

Creating spaces through folding, creasing, cutting, rolling, etc.

Working with the scale of these spaces formed and how they can be used.

NATURE INSPIRED DESIGN

Analysis of Bank of China tower, HK, which derives its form from the growth of bamboo shoots.

Looking into possible derivations of the form from nature.

COMPREHENSIVE GEOMETRIC ANALYSIS

INTERPRETATION of image and derivation of a graphic from itABSTRACTION of the graphic into a modelEXPLORATION of the spaces created in the model through sketches

Study of vegetables like cauliflower, capsicum, etc. and analyzing the various geometries of the different parts that comprise the vegetable.

ABSTRACT EXPLORATION

Package design for a fragile object like spectacles, using eco-friendly materials and avoiding plastics and environment-unfriendly materials.

STAIRCASE DESIGN

Models made out of different materials like Clay and Plaster of Paris, with various levels, from a graphic.

Understanding different materials, their texture and other properties.

Observing figure-background relation by changing the figure in a fixed background.

Different expressions are derived by changing size, orientation, placement, colour, etc. of elements.

Rhythmic expression

Linear expression

Abstraction of elements like the Chhatri and the columns

Abstraction of the facades of Havelis, by emphasizing on the verticality of the facade.

Courtyard with diagonal fins that act as structural members.These fins create interesting shadow patterns and provide different viewing experiences.

Spiral S-shaped staircase suspended by steel cables from the cantilevered staircase above.

Staircase halves are cantilevered from two columns/intersections and meet at the centre.

CONCEPT:

The swaying and graceful movements of Mohiniyattam influences the form of the building.

DESIGN:

- Entrance lobby and adjoining administrative area- Front lawn accessible from lobby - Dance hall flanked by changing rooms and toilets for boys and girls- Boxed windows, eliminating need for chajjas- Folded roof of the dance hall resembling the pleats of the dance saree- Dance hall opens out to a mini amphitheatre for outdoor performances

BACHELOR PAD, VADODARA

CONCEPT:

Design of bachelor pad in congruence with the style of the residence’s architect, yet satisfying the needs of the client.

DESIGN:

- Entry accentuated with a curved wall, similar to the architect’s approach in the residence.- Slit windows along the curved wall providing different views.- Deck overlooking a water body, accessible from the living room and bedroom.- Small protrusion of bedroom (upto lintel level) for the bed area, having full length windows on either side, to let in light and cross ventilation, and providing a view of the water body.

HOTEL, MANDAWACONCEPT: Mandawa’s havelis are of introvert planning, with courtyards, and all activities take place within the built environment. As opposed to the context, the hotel is extrovert, with 4 wings and a central wind tunnel, and all common activities taking place outside, in order to make the neighbourhood more lively.

DESIGN:

- Spaces for public activities are situated on the ground floor, and spill out to the open, while the rooms are located on the floors above.- The rooms (deluxe, semi-deluxe and suites) have different views- pool view, amphitheatre view, café view.- There is a water body with a fountain in the centre of the atrium, around which the wings spread out with different activities.

CONCEPT: Introvert planning, providing different kinds of experiences at different areas.Segregation of kindergarten, primary and secondary blocks, yet unifying them through semi-open spaces.

DESIGN:

- Parking of cycles and two-wheelers along boundary in order to provide easy access to classrooms from parking.- Single entrance ramp for primary and secondary blocks and one entry into the site, in between the admin and K.G. block.- Classrooms aligned in accordance with wind direction and north light.- Amphitheatre and adjoining canteen facing the river.- Multi-purpose hall on the top floor providing views of the river.

SITE:

The site is situated in between a road and a river.The wind direction and North influences the orientation of the classrooms in order to provide the best environment within the classrooms.
