Top 10 New Years Destinations 1. Sydney, Australia The Sydney New Year’s Eve celebration is for Australians what the New York Apple drop is for Americans. Con-
sidering this party draws out a million guests, not including the millions that tune in via TV, you know they are go-
ing to put on a fantastic show. Located along the Sydney Harbour, the fireworks are absolutely fantastic. Plus, you
could celebrate in Sydney and quickly fly somewhere else and party the New Year twice.
2. New York City, New York
The ball drop in Times Square is synonymous with New Year’s Eve. Besides this once-a-year party, New Yorkers
just know how to put on a fantastic celebration. There are new clubs, legendary clubs, ritzy hotels and five-star din-
ers for you to experience. Times Square is jammed on December 31 so get there super early if you want to catch a
glimpse of it. Even if you aren’t able to reach Times Square, the vibe of the city is reason enough to come.
3. Berlin, Germany
As an important symbol in German history, the Brandenburg Gate holds a special place in all German hearts. Hun-
dreds of thousands of them come to the gate each year to welcome in the upcoming year. Although Berlin can be a
tad cold during this time of year, you won’t even notice it with all of the people surrounding you.
4. London, England
If you are looking for a street party, look no further. The London Parade, held New Year’s Day, attracts visitors
from all over Europe. It is a fantastic celebration featuring local heroes, marching bands, clowns and more. To ap-
preciate the size of this celebration you really need to see it firsthand. Of course, London has a variety of different
events for you to enjoy in the evening as well. Make your way to the London Eye for a spectacular fireworks dis-
play. Another favorite to watch the time go by is at London’s Big Ben clock tower. It too has a fabulous fireworks
show for you to enjoy.
5. Toronto, Ontario
The diversity that thrives in Toronto can be seen through the various celebrations the city hosts over New Years.
There is of course a huge selection of clubs for you to choose from, especially in the Entertainment District. The
annual New Year’s Eve Bash at Nathan Phillips Square is another venue where you can listen to some of today’s
chart topping performers. Ending with a bang on December 31, the fireworks display is truly amazing.

Pedestrians and Crosswalks– It’s The Law
Arbor Greene has four (4) designated crosswalks on two of our most heavily traveled roadways. Two crosswalks
are on Arbor Greene Drive, one at Devonshire Lake Drive intersection and one at the Community Center entrance
at the intersection at Arbor Wind Drive. The other two crosswalks are located on Arbor Creek Drive at the intersec-
tion of Avalon Lane and the remaining crosswalk is located at the intersection of Arbor Run Drive. These cross-
walks provide a safe and convenient area for our residents to cross the streets, but only if vehicle drivers adhere
to the Florida State Statues:
FSS 316.130 (7a): The driver of a vehicle at an intersection that has a traffic control signal in place shall stop be-
fore entering the crosswalk and remain stopped to allow a pedestrian, with a permitted signal, to cross a roadway
when the pedestrian is in the crosswalk or steps into the crosswalk and is upon the half of the roadway upon which
the vehicle is traveling or when the pedestrian is approaching so closely from the opposite half of the roadway as to
be in danger.
FSS 316.130 (7b): The driver of a vehicle at any crosswalk where signage so indicates shall stop and remain
stopped to allow a pedestrian to cross a roadway when the pedestrian is in the crosswalk or steps into the crosswalk
and is upon the half of the roadway upon which the vehicle is traveling or when the pedestrian is approaching so
closely from the opposite half of the roadway as to be in danger.
FSS 316.130 (7c): When traffic control signals are not in place or in operation and there is no signage indicating
otherwise, the driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way, slowing down or stopping if need be to so yield, to a
pedestrian crossing the roadway within a crosswalk when the pedestrian is upon the half of the roadway upon
which the vehicle is traveling or when the pedestrian is approaching so closely from the opposite half of the road-
way as to be in danger. Any pedestrian crossing a roadway at a point where a pedestrian tunnel or overhead pedes-
trian crossing has been provided shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles upon the roadway.

Parents:
Do you have children around the age of 10-12? Re-
cently, three young girls were observed entering the
code to a village gate and then proceeded to ―ride‖ the
gate while it was opening. This is a dangerous activity
that could lead to a serious injury of your child. Addi-
tionally, this added weight to the gate contributes to in-
creased maintenance and expense for the residents of
the village. Please inform your children that riding the
gate is prohibited and extremely dangerous.
If you observe this activity, please help by identifying
the children and inform the parents of this activity, or
call the Arbor Greene Admin office with the informa-
tion. We will alert the
parents to their chil-
dren’s actions so the
parents can take correc-
tive action.
It takes a village to
raise a child. Let’s all
help keep our children
safe. Have them swing
on swings, not on vil-
lage gates.

Trash and Litter Throughout Our Community:
Please Don’t Feed The Wildlife!
The failure of some residents to use trash receptacles for their trash and garbage represents a
disturbing trend in our community. By leaving trash in thin plastic bags, and putting it out
the night before, some residents are providing a wonderful treat for raccoons, rats, buzzards
and other assorted scavengers. Then, the leftovers blow around and make the neighborhood
look like Mount Trashmore. The Arbor Greene policy regarding garbage and trash is as fol-
lows:
All household debris with exception of bulk items must be in trash receptacles that are ap-
proved by the trash company and the HOA. Approved HOA trash receptacles must be ani-
mal and bird proof, constructed of metal or heavy
formed plastic with secure lids. The amount of an in-
dividual container can not exceed the ability to secure
the lid on tight. Plastic bags are not acceptable con-
tainers, as wild animals can easily dig/rip their way
through the plastic.
We spend an inordinate amount of time picking up litter, cigarette butts and
trash on our streets, especially after trash day. When walking throughout our
community, please Leave It Cleaner Than You Found it! If you observe
someone littering, please call the Hillsborough County “LITTER”
Hotline: 1-877-y-litter. If you observe someone dumping please call the
Hillsborough County Sheriffs Dept: (813) 247-8200.

Prescribed Burning
Tis the season-for prescribed
burning! Please be aware that
from time to time the South-
west Florida Water Manage-
ment District conducts pre-
scribed burns on various areas
within Flatwoods Park and
other parts of the Lower Hills-
borough Flood Detention
Area. Prescribed burning
maintains the ecological integ-
rity of the natural plant com-
munities while reducing the risk of wildfires. Burns are
carried out by qualified personnel with proper equip-
ment when weather and site conditions are appropriate.
For visitor safety, the District works with Hillsborough
County Parks, Recreation, and Conservation Dept. staff
to close trails during burns. Your patience and coopera-
tion are greatly appreciated!

6. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Rio knows how to bring in the New Year. Actually, it has the reputation for
being the best place to bring in the New Year. You and a couple million of
your closest friends all line the stunning Copacabana Beach to watch a fire-
works show like you have never seen before. Although they are definitely at
their peak at the stroke of midnight, the locals start early in the afternoon and
continue until the morning of New Year’s Day. Before midnight, you will
see people dressed in all white throwing flowers into the water as a symbol
of good luck.
7. Tokyo, Japan
Celebrating the New Year in Tokyo is filled with friendly people walking the streets as they go to family and
friends’ houses, restaurants or even the clubs. The celebration begins a few days earlier on the 29th of December and
continues until January 4th. Yes, that means you have a full week to celebrate with your new friends.
8. Los Angeles, California
LA is a hotspot anytime of year but the city bursts with energy on December 31st. There are thousands of clubs and
restaurants for you to choose from, fantastic firework displays held throughout the city and music pumping from al-
most every street corner. What makes Los Angeles stand out though is its legendary Pasadena Tournament of Roses
Parade. The parade comes complete with floats, marching bands and even has a famous Grand Marshal that leads the
way.
9. Paris, France
The City of Light comes into full force on New Year’s Eve. In general, there are two areas where locals and guests
come together – the Champs Elysées and the Eiffel tower. If you are planning on starting out your evening at the
Champs Elysées, you will end up at the Arc de Triomphe by the stroke of midnight. It seems anywhere you go
though, there are thousands of people milling around who are drinking that delicious Parisian wine and offering well
wishes to anyone within hearing/shouting distance.
10. Disney World, Florida
Disney World is a great choice for all of the families who would like to celebrate the New Year together. You aren’t
the only one with this idea though and these parks can be quite packed, so make sure you stick together. Whichever
of the parks you decide to watch the fireworks, you will be in for a real treat. The favorite though seems to be Pleas-
ure Island, which magically transforms itself into a fantastic street party filled with music, food and entertainment.

COOLING & PLUMBING
Continued from page 4: Pedestrians and Crosswalks
As many of us have experienced, we, as pedestrians, should never "assume" a vehicle driver will stop and allow us
to cross the street and unharmed. Often, drivers are in such a rush that they expect pedestrians to stop for them, and
get quite upset when they have to stop and let pedestrians slowly cross the street in the crosswalk. Here are some
common sense guidelines to pedestrians, drivers and bikers.
Pedestrians:
Stop and look for vehicles.
Make sure vehicles are stopping before you begin to cross. Make eye contact with the driver if possible.
Make sure vehicles in each lane are stopping. Never assume vehicles are going to stop.
Vehicle Drivers:
Always stop for pedestrians in the crosswalk.
The speed limit in Arbor Greene is 30MPH (except in Carriage Homes and Devonshire which is 25MPH). How-
ever, when pedestrians are present, slow down and expect the unexpected.
Children are prone to "dart" into the street when nearby.
Be patient with slow walkers. Don’t blow your horn or your cool!!
Bikers:
Go with the traffic flow.
Obey all traffic laws.
Yield to traffic when appropriate.
Stay alert at all times.
Look before turning.
Watch for parked cars.

A Message From the Neighborhood Watch Directors
Hello Arbor Greene (AG) neighbors. We hope you and your family had a happy and safe holiday season. Now that
we are about to start a new year, we want to suggest some resolutions you might consider to make 2011 a safer one
for you, your family, and your property.
We had a successful year. The AG Neighborhood Watch (NWA) has grown in numbers through the AG Neighbor-
hood Watch e-mail distro. Unfortunately, in our poor economy, crooks are looking for unsecured places to steal
property, and on occasion this past year, AG homes/garages were burglarized. Working together, we can help limit
criminal opportunities, keeping you and your family and property more secure.
Resolution #1: Light it – Criminals hate light at night since they fear being identified. Turn on lights at the back
and front of your home at dusk. Buy timers for lights inside your house so lights are turned on when you are not
home makes it appear you are home even if you are not. You can also purchase motion sensors and timers which
will turn on outdoor lights at night.
Resolution #2: Lock it and alarm it - Lock your doors, windows, and turn on your alarm for your home. Consider
turning your alarm on even when you are at home. Make sure you lock your vehicles at all times, even if they are
parked in the garage; keep valuables out of sight if you have to leave them in the vehicle. Keep garage doors closed
to discourage criminals from stealing your property and attempting to enter your home.
Resolution #3: Eliminate it - If you still have boxes from holiday gifts for televisions, computers, game-systems,
etc., then make sure you cut those boxes up before putting them out in the recycling bins. Thieves often look for
those boxes to help them determine which homes are worth breaking into.
Resolution #4: Shred it - Work to help prevent identity theft. Make certain you shred any document which has
your personal data on it such as name, address, phone number, credit card number, bank account information, etc.
Be careful what personal details you post on social network sites such as Facebook.
Resolution #5: Enhance it - Add some additional security measures to your home. In addition to the security
measures mentioned in the earlier paragraphs, you can install relatively inexpensive chains and deadbolts on your
doors, door chimes on your lanai screen doors, motion activated outdoor lights, etc. Leave the radio or television on
to give the appearance that you are home. If you are able to spend a bit more, then security systems with cameras,
motion detectors, and glass breakage sensors can enhance your home security.
Resolution #6: Report it - Become a Neighborhood Watch Association and Tampa Police Department’s ―eyes and
ears‖ by actively watching who is in your neighborhood. Criminals sometimes pose as repairmen or delivery per-
sons, so keep a watchful eye out for these types of perpetrators. If you see someone who is not from the neighbor-
hood and acting suspiciously, do not confront them, but call the Tampa
Police Department to report them at 813-231-6130. The police do not
know who belongs in your neighborhood, but if you call, then they can
dispatch a police unit to check out suspicious persons. You will not
sound paranoid and your actions can prevent criminal activity. If a
crime is about to happen or has occurred against person(s) or property,
immediately dial 9-1-1 from a safe distance and do not confront
crooks.
Resolution #7: Join it - Become better informed by becoming a mem-
ber of the Arbor Greene Neighborhood Watch Association (NWA) e-
mail distro. Send an e-mail to [email protected] and
receive information from Arbor Greene NWA co-leaders and Tampa
Police Department regarding local criminal activities and security tips.
Joining this group does not obligate you to any NWA associated activi-
ties.

Health Tips: 1. Walking– Regular physical activity is probably the
best documented way to shield your brain against ag-
ing.
2. Reducing Stress– In a Harvard Study, people who did
relaxation exercises for 20 minutes a day saw their
attention and responsiveness improve significantly in
just five weeks.
3. Lower Your Cholesterol– Keep your heart healthy
with nuts and seeds that are high in Phytosterols (a
substance that lowers your cholesterol) naturally.
4. Accelerate Your Weight Loss– Smell your food before
eating. Chew your food slowly to appreciate the fla-
vor and texture. Eat hot foods while they are hot to
maximize the aroma vapors.
5. High Blood Pressure– Tame
your blood pressure with
meditation. Studies show that
meditating regularly can
lower blood pressure and re-
