PREAMBLE
ANNUAL QUALITY ASSURANCE REPORT OF THE IQAC
Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College, Udupi applied for re-accreditation by NAAC
in the month of July 2009 and peer team visited the college on 21st – 23rd Jan 2010. The
NAAC has awarded B Grade on 4 point scale to the college in the month of March 2010.
The Internal Quality Assurance Cell was re-constituted as per the revised
guidelines for the preparation of the Report for the year 2011-12.

PART – A
The plan of action chalked out by IQAC in the beginning of the yeartowards quality enhancement:
Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College got reaccredited with B grade on 4 point
scale in 2010 by NAAC Accreditation Board. According to the Peer team – “Mahatma
Gandhi Memorial College, Udupi conveys an optimistic message of how a growth
oriented educational Institution can bring about rapid transformation of an extremely
backward rural area through a dynamic process of education and cultural activities ……
cherishing and cultivating a chain of academic institutions of different hues, but serving
the basic cause of educating minds, is indeed rare among Indian Affiliated Colleges”.
The Vision & Mission statements of the college and the encouraging words of
Peer team have made the IQAC members of the college to chalk-out a detailed plan of
action for the academic year under report.
IQAC requested teachers to increase their participation in various forums, which
directly or indirectly involve in the designing and updating of the curriculum. As far as
the student support and progression is concerned, besides strengthening Parent Teacher
Association and Alumni Association, IQAC felt that students should be made employable
through career counseling and placement assistance. Likewise it was decided to improve
the organization by obtaining student feedback regarding the teaching staff of the college.
IQAC decided to take following steps for the quality enhancement among students:
Conducting periodical tests, seminars for the Students.
Taking Students to the Industries to have interaction.
Arranging students’ visit to the Courts, Zilla Panchayat and other Local
Government offices.

To arrange remedial courses to the needy students.
Conducting study tours to the students.
To arrange career workshops to expose the students for career opportunities.
To organize workshops to enable the students to face interview and participate in
the group discussions.
To organize quiz programmes for the improvement of General knowledge of
students.
To organize special coaching camps for various sports and games.
To motivate students to participate in workshops / seminars in other colleges.
For quality enhancement of teachers, IQAC decided to encourage the teachers....

To conduct minor/major research projects with the help of ICSSR, UGC, NAAC
and other Agencies.
To publish articles in Journals and Newspapers.

Achievements by the end of the year:
Students’ quality enhancement:The IQAC has noted that the subject Seminars, Quiz, Industrial Visit have been
carried out in the year by many Departments. The IQAC has noted that HRD
programmes and many other programmes by different Departments have been organized
to enable the students to acquire more general knowledge and skill. IQAC is happy to
observe that the remedial courses have been conducted by the faculty to the needy
students. IQAC has also noted that special encouragement has been given to talented
students of NCC, NSS and Sports men and women during the year.

NCC, NSS, Sports etc., are mentioned in respective places of PART – B of the report.
Teachers’ quality enhancement:
The IQAC has observed that many faculty members have attended / presented
papers in various Seminars, Workshops and Symposia.
Three staff members have attended Refresher course & two staff members have
attended Orientation Course held at different places during the year of report.
Smt Sandhya Nambiar, Department of English has obtained her Doctoral degree
and Smt Vasantha Ravi Prakash, Department of English has obtained her M.Phil degree
during the year of report.

1. Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the Institution:
Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College, Udupi was established in 1949 by lateDr.T.M.A. Pai. It is sponsored by the Academy of General Education, Manipal and isaffiliated to Mangalore University. The college campus houses two Auditoriums –Nutana Ravindra Mantapa & Muddanna Mantapa (Open Air Auditorium), RashtrakaviGovinda Pai Samshodhana Kendra, Regional Resource Centre for Folk performing arts,well catalogued RRC archives, Yakshagana Kendra, well equipped Computer Centre, anextensive A.L.N.Rao playground and a Library with a difference – Granthaloka.
The college is a premier Institution with rich legacy in terms of facilities,equipments, staff and achievements. For six decades, the college has served as the focalpoint in all-round development of students of Udupi region.
The college offers B.A., B.Sc., B.Com., B.C.A., PGDCA, and part-time courses inGerman to the students irrespective of castes, communities, class, religion and place ofbirth. The college provides free Mid-day meals to the needy students. The managementhas taken lot of efforts to support and encourage sports and extra-curricular activities likeMusic, NCC, NSS, Rangers, Youth Red Cross etc. The college has also organizedremedial courses to the slow learners. The college is providing number of scholarshipsand free ships to the meritorious students.
2. New Academic Programmes initiated:
The Computer Department conducts certificate courses during lunch hours andvacations for the benefit of the students. The Department has also organized free Internetclasses for students and staff.

Many faculty members have contributed in re-designing of various coursematerials by working as the members of the Board of Studies of Mangalore Universityand a few autonomous colleges

21. Improvement in the Library Services:
The MGM College houses a state of the art library. It caters to the needs of thenearly 2600 borrowers and will be open from 8.30 am 5.15 pm. It is one of the biggestlibraries among the affiliated college libraries of Mangalore University. Theimplementation of automation facilities has created user friendly atmosphere and hasbeen appreciated by the students. It also serves the public as well as KSOU students. Ason today, our library collection has 91,906 books, 95 periodicals and 10 dailies.
This year we have provided DEL-NET SERVICE, INFLIBNET, NLIST -resources. The library has 75 thousand e-books and nearly 2500 e-journals on differentsubjects. Bar coding system has been completed in the library in this academic year.CCTV has been installed in the library at a cost of 90,000/-
In order to familiarize the library for new comers, ‘know your library’ programmewas conducted in the beginning of the year. The Library is computerized and Internetfacility is extended to the students. Students can take printout of the downloadedmaterials. The CD writing facility is also given to students. The library is also equippedwith a Xerox Machine.

The Students’ feed back is taken from all the students in all the courses for all theteachers. Overall feedback is good on all the teachers. The Principal is monitoring theperformance of all staff members regularly.

25. Computerization of administration and the process of admissions andexamination results, issue of certificates:
All members of the office staff are undergoing training in order to Computerizethe office work.
26. Increase in the infrastructural facilities:
The Deluxe Ladies Hostel ‘Thameru’ with an intake capacity of 68 students wasconstructed at a cost of 1.5 Cr, with the U.G.C aid and matching grant from theManagement. It was inaugurated by late Dr.V.S.Acharya, minister for higher educationand endowment - Karnataka and our students have occupied the new building.
The construction of ‘Vajrasoudha’, the Diamond Jubilee commemorativebuilding which is built at a cost of nearly 4 Cr is also completed. The new course M.Sc.computer science is going to be started in this new building and the existing computerscience Dept and the labs will be shifted to this building.
A special U.G.C grant of Rs. 25 lakh has been sanctioned for the enhancementof Teaching and Learning process. The college has already received Rs. 12.5 lakh. EachDept. in the college has been given a laptop and an L.C.D projector in order to enhancethe teaching learning process.
A new Herbarium and Research lab for basic sciences & Environment has beenestablished for Rs 10 lakh, under the lab up-gradation grant for Research andDevelopment from the U.G.C.

27. Technology Upgradation:
All the Departments of the college are provided with a computer. Somedepartments are also provided with a printer, CD writer and LCD projector.
28. Computer and Internet access and training to Teachers and Students:
The Students and Teachers are getting trained to use computer and they can enroll(Both full time and part-time) as the students of Diploma course in Computer Science.Internet facility is available in the college library and college office.
29. Financial Aid to Students:
Apart from the Government Freeships and Scholarships, the college offers 132endowment and scholarship prizes to the meritorious and deserving students. The detailsof various Government scholarships given to the students apart fromendowment/scholarship are enclosed in Annexure – 8.
30. Activities and support from the Alumni Association:
Apart from spreading goodwill, the Association is encouraging the students bygiving a few Scholarships and Endowments.

Encouragement is given, by providing tracksuits and refreshments to the studentsduring the time of rehearsals and coaching camps. Freeship has been given to the specialSportsman.

Guidance and counseling unit was functioning under the leadership of Prof.Yashawanthi Salian, Dept of commerce.

The Placement Cell has put Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College on the map ofCampus recruitment. The cell under the guidance of Mr Vishwanath Pai, HOD ofComputer Science has facilitated several placement drives and motivated many studentsto be career oriented even before they get their degrees. The cell has conducted freetraining classes for the students to face the aptitude test & Interview. This year we havedone ‘POOLED CAMPUS DRIVE’ wherein, many students of the nearby colleges likeSri Bhuvanendra College-Karkala, Poorna Prajna College & Govt. College for women-Udupi, Vijaya College-Mulky, Bhandarkars College-Kundapur and SMS college-Bramhavara and many other nearby colleges were also benefited.
The prominent companies who visited our campus were Wipro Technologies,iGate Global Solutions, Wipro BPO, Infosys BPO, Win man Software, Vijaya Bank etc.We are happy to state that more than 125 students have been selected by differentcompanies.

NCC Naval wing:
The Naval NCC Sub Unit in MGM College entered 17th year of function after histimely Rejuvenation in 1995. Our NCC Naval sub Unit is affiliated to 6 KAR Naval Unit,NCC Udupi. Lt. Dr S.R.Shet is working as ANO of the NCC unit of the college.
This year our cadets actively participated in tree plantation in the month Aug,Boat Pulling during September – October and donated Blood on variousoccasions for a number of patients in need.
On 15th August 2010 our college sub unit presented impressive March Past & theGuard of honour to the Chief Guest, Principal Dr. P V Gowda in the college andalso attended the Independence day Parade at Ajjarkad.
On January 26th 2011, our cadets presented most impressive march past and theGuard of honour to the chief guest Principal Dr. P V Gowda in the college andattended Republic day parade at Ajjarakad & got First place in March pastcompetition.
NCC Army Wing:
The N.C.C. Army wing of the college is sub-unit of 21 Kar BN N.C.C. Udupi. Ithas stepped into 11th year of functioning. It is working under the guidance ofSmt. Jyothi Nayak, Lecturer, Dept of Mathematics. She has successfully completedPRCN course held at Gwalior from 18th Aug 2011 to 15th Nov 2011 for 3 months.All the cadets of NCC Army wing have participated in all the community servicesrendered by the NCC naval unit.
NSS :
All the NSS activities are guided and monitored by Sri. Vidyanath K, Dept. ofPolitical Science and Ms. Latha Nayak, dept. of History.
NSS activities for the academic year 2011-12 started with the OrientationProgramme for the new NSS volunteers on 23rd July 2011. Mr. Laxminarayana Karanth,lecturer in Economics was the resource person.

On 2nd September, 2011, NSS volunteers participated in the programme on‘Communal Harmony’ in the Audio Visual Hall. Mr. Prakash Kanive, Principal of VBCLwas the resource person.
NSS Annual Special Camp was held from 20-11-2011 to 26-11-2011 in SriMahalingeshwara Higher Primary School, Nandalike.
In association with the Udupi District Health Dept, a Health AwarenessProgramme was organized for the NSS volunteers on 17th December, 2011. Thevolunteers were made to answer the questionnaire related to health issues. Senior medicalofficers of the Health Dept, Sri Ananda Gowda and Sri Krishnamoorthy gave usefulhealth tips to our students.
85 NSS volunteers participated in the Procession held in connection with theNational Integration Camp (24-12-11 to 30-12-11) organized in our College inassociation with Nehru Yuva Kendra. Ten NSS Volunteers actively participated in theweeklong Camp.
On 8th January 2012, a Trekking to Koodlu falls was organized for the NSSvolunteers. 75 students participated in it.
On 12th January 2012, 21 NSS volunteers participated in the valedictory functionof the year long activities of Aids Prevention and Control Unit, Udupi. It was held inBhandarkars’ College Kundapur. Our volunteers participated in various University levelcompetitions conducted in this connection and Ramanji of I BA secured First prize inSlogan Writing and Second Prize in the Essay competition.
On 14th January 2012, NSS units of our College organized a Blood DonationCamp, with the assistance from other clubs of our college. Technical assistance wasgiven by KMC, Manipal. Exactly 100 students donated blood along with a few staffmembers. Blood classification and grouping was also done for other students. Blooddonors were given MAHE Medicare Card.
On 11th February, competitions like Waste to Wealth, Pick and Act, Pick andSpeak and Singing competitions were held. Volunteers actively participated in it.
NSS units of our college actively participated in various college programmes likethe Independence Day Celebrations, Republic Day and Sports Day.

Kasturba Rangers Unit:
Rangers unit of the College was functioning under the able leadership of Mrs.Vanitha, Ranger Leader, Department of Commerce as the Staff Advisor and Kum. KavyaII B.A. as the Ranger Secretary.
The Annual activities of the unit were inaugurated by Mrs. Vanitha Rao, GuideCaptain MJC Manipal on 29th Aug 2011. The members of the unit took the oath and wereadvised to adopt the spirit of service in their life. On 24th December 2011 one daytrekking programme was organized for the benefit of the members to Hanumangundi. AMangalore University level Ranger and Rovers meet was organized by the District Scoutsand Guides Association Udupi on 11th and 12th February 2012. Many of our Rangershave actively participated and joined various camp activities such as adventure, training,trekking etc.
Apart from the above activities member of the unit also participated in campuscleaning. Independence Day Republic Day and Sports Day march past.
Youth Red Cross:
The Youth Red Cross of MGM College began its activities of the year 2011-12with a procession on 12-08-2011 from Big Bazaar to Board High School tocommemorate International Red Cross Day. Nearly 60 numbers along with the secretaryMiss Shwetha Rao and the Convenor Mr. Kiran Hande took part in the procession. Thestudents of Youth Red Cross actively participated in the Independence Day Celebration.Ten of our members including our secretary took part in the parade. The Youth RedCross wing of our College organized a talk on the topic “Life style diseases and itsManagement” with a view to educate the youth about the disastrous consequence ofsedentary life style. Mrs. Vinodini, the H.O.D. of Zoology, MGM College was theresource person. The talk was well appreciated by the large audience and also ourPrincipal Dr. P.V. Gowda who presided over the function. About 85 students and 20 staffmembers attended the programme.
On 12th January 2012 we celebrated “World Youth Day” by organizing a talk onSwami Vivekananda to commemorate Swami Vivekananda’s Birthday. Sri RajindraBhat, the national trainer of JC was the resource person. On 14th January 2012 our YouthRed Cross wing along with other associations jointly organized a one day Blood donationcamp. On 26th January 2012, 31 members participated in the parade and about 28members attended the programme.

The details of the healthy practices of the Institution are as follows:
The members of the staff submit self appraisal report every year to themanagement and the Joint Director of Collegiate Education. The confidentialreports of The Principal submitted to the management help to maintain therequired standard and discipline.
The Principal and the heads of the Departments will monitor the work done bythe Staff members written in ‘Work Diary’.
The academic performance of the students is checked by adopting thefollowing mechanism:
The Staff members will play the role of Academic Advisors of thestudents. The students of each class are divided into small groups of twentyor twenty five. The over all academic performance, character, discipline andparticipation in co-curricular activities of these groups are supervised by theconcerned Academic Advisors. The cumulative record is the documentmaintained by the Academic Advisor. This document is signed by theAcademic Advisors and forwarded to Parents/Guardian/Warden to appraisethem of the students’ performance.
Two tests are conducted to equip the students for the University SemesterExaminations and also for the calculation of Internal Assessment marks.Proficiency prizes are awarded on the basis of these examinations and thishelps the students to perform better in Final Examinations.
Parent – Teacher meet is organized twice a year in order to provide an openplatform for free and healthy interaction.
The Staff Council consisting of Heads of Departments helps the Principal totake decisions regarding academic matters, examinations, co-curricularactivities etc.
The HRD and TQM Cell conduct Personality Development Programmes onevery Saturday afternoons. The other programmes conducted includes PublicSpeaking courses, confidence building exercises, mind skill exercises andleadership development programmes.
Uniform has been made compulsory for all students of the college.

The Annual College Magazine – ‘Sanmathi’ encourages the students to thinkand express their ideas on life based on their experiences of students life. Thisyear it has won second place in ‘best college-magazine competition’ conductedby Mangalore University.
Vadiraja Vidyarthini Nilaya – Ladies Hostel:
We have 180 inmates in the Ladies Hostel. From time to time variousprogrammes and talks have been held in this academic year for the all roundpersonality development of the students. Yoga classes were held every day. Theinmates have been very active participants in the various co-curricular activitiesof the college.
Mid-day Meals scheme:
The Mid-day Meals Club of the College has been providing free meals to theunder privileged students of the college. We are happy to acknowledge the

voluntary contribution made by various donors towards the Mid-day Meals’ Fund.This year 70 degree students have been the beneficiaries of this scheme.
MG.M. College Students’ Co-operative Stores:
The Co-operative store of the college provides books and stationery to thestudents at reasonable rates. Dr. P V Gowda as the Honorary president,Mr Anil Kumar as the Honorary Secretary, with the support of the Directors fromamong the teachers and student representatives has ably managed the working ofthe Co-operative Stores. A certain percentage of the profits from the sales is setaside every year for the granting of scholarships to deserving students. Mr Udaya,the clerk is the in-charge of the Stores in conducting the business. The accountsof the stores are audited by the Government auditors of the Co-operativeDepartment from time to time.
Department of German:
The Department of German provides facilities for teaching German at the basicand intermediate level. In spite of several obstacles nine students of the collegehave succeed themselves to join the Basic course and a lone student is attendingthe Intermediate level course in German. At the beginning of the academic year,departmental examinations were held in which four candidates passed the Basiccertificate examination, and one candidate each passed the Junior Diploma andSenior Diploma Examination.
Students Welfare Council:
We have a promising and enthusiastic band of members in the Students WelfareCouncil. The SWC, under the guidance of Dr N Hala Naik- Student WelfareOfficer and two Chief Staff Co-coordinators namely Mrs Sandhya R Nambiarand Dr. H.S. Shivaswamy, helped in conducting the various activities.
Science club:
Science Club was functioning under the guidance of Dr M G Vijaya of PhysicsDept. A special Guest lecture was arranged on 20th Aug 2011. Dr. Pushparaj ofB.A.R.C delivered a lecture on the topic ‘Benefits and Risks of Radiation’.Members of the club were much benefited by the 2days’ workshop onExperiments and Models in Physics conducted on 10th &11th Sept 2011.Orientation program for high school teachers was conducted on 13th Sept 2011and many students assisted as volunteers in the laboratory. Video show on “Indianspace program” was organized for the members on 9th Feb 2012. Quizcompetition for the members of the club was conducted on 16th Feb 2012.

IT Club:
The IT club activities were organized by Mr.Vishwanath Pai, HOD of ComputerScience. There was a talk on “Principles of mobile phone communications” by theConvener of the club Mr. Vishwanath Pai on 24th Sept 2011. He also conducted aseminar on Cloud computing on 28th Feb 2012. The in–house journal IT++ wasreleased by Sri Gopalkrishna Joisa and a seminar on “Software writing for handheld devices” was held on the same day.
Nataka Ranga , Literary & Fine Arts Club:
The club has been active throughout the year under the leadership of Dr.PuthiVasanth Kumar and Dr.A.Srinivas Rao. The students have participated in severalprograms and won prizes.
Commerce club:
The Commerce Club has been functioning under the guidance of Mrs. LeelavathiU, Department of Commerce. The inauguration of the club was carried outinnovatively on 25th Aug 2011 by merging together the formal function with adebate competition. A documentary on Warren Buffet’s path to becoming theworld’s richest man with his strategy for success in share market investing wasshowcased on 24th Sept 2011.
Sri K. Shantharm Vittal Baliga, an eminent personality in the field of educationalconsultancy had an interaction session on Development with the students ofCommerce club on 6th Jan 2012. Dr. Devendranath Nayak, Professor inManagement at University of Ballorot, Australia hosted a talk show on“Graduate Attributes & the learning imperative” on 6th Feb 2012.
Eco- Club:
With the motto of ‘Go Green’, Eco-Club has organised various events keeping inmind its vision to protect and create awareness about the environment among thepeople. Mrs. Vinodini, HOD, Zoology Dept. was the Convenor. Among thevarious events conducted by it some of the important ones are highlighted asbelow.
On August 24th and 27th, 2011 the College Botanica garden was cleanedand manured by the Eco-club team under the guidance of the Principal andConvener.

On 5th November 2011 the Club conducted a programme, ‘parisarajagrithi’ for high school students of Pethri-Brahmavar through a talk aboutEnvironmental Awareness by the Convenor.
On 18th September 2011, the club conducted an Essay competition for allthe college students on the topic “Man in nature past, present and future”.
A prize-distribution programme was organized for the same event, and onthis occasion there was a talk on ‘Environmental laws’ by Mr PrakashKanive, Principal Vaikunta Baliga Law College, Udupi. Along with it asurvey report on ‘parisara vinashadinda aranya pradeshagalalliaguthiruva thondaregalu’ done by the members of the Eco club wassubmitted to the Department of Forestry.
On 21st September 2011, old newspapers and magazines from our collegelibrary were given to “SAMRUDH” an NGO in Manipal, where specialchildren prepare paper bags, notepads and other eco-friendly products andon 11th January, the “SAMRUDH’ team taught the Eco-club members toprepare eco-friendly paper bags.
On 15th February 2012, the Principal, Convener and members of the clubvisited Karje and Pethri to study medicinal properties of plants and tissueculture techniques respectively.
Sports club:
The club was active under the guidance of Mr K L Siddaramanna. Prizes won byindividual and team events have been mentioned in Student achievents.
Sagrisentinal – Kannada wall magazine:
Students have been regularly contributing articles, poems & paintings etc to bedisplayed on the ‘wall magazine’ under the guidance of the ConvenerSmt Pushpalatha Santhiar, Department of English.
The best among them will be published in the college magazine.
Gandhian Study Centre:
Gandhian Study Centre has the following objectives –
To encourage to do research on life and works of ‘Gandhiji’.

The Study Centre of MGM College Udupi of Karnataka State Open UniversityManasagangotri, Mysore attracts several students in and around the district, as wellas those outside Karnataka State for studying different courses like B.A., B.Com,B.Lib., BSIT, M.A., M.Com., M.B.A., MSIT, M.Tech., M.Lib., and differentDiploma and Certificate courses.
More than 2500 students have been registered to take examinations at the end of theacademic year.
The Centre organizes Contact Programmes (short duration) every year, as directed bythe KSOU of Mysore, from time to time. The centre offers help and encouragementto needy students belonging to various classes of degree students during their studies.

Under MGM College Trust, we have three sister Institutions namely Rastra KaviGovinda Pai Samshodana Kendra, Regional Resource Center and YakshaganaKendra.
