42nd Annual Wild Rose Antique Show

Our annual show was held April 1 and 2nd in halls G & H at the Edmonton Expo Centre. Admissions were up by 500 this year; 3,591 and we sold 250 vendor spaces. Fifteen displays of collections were presented.

Appraiser, Gale Pirie, is busy trying to meet a deadline for an article in Canadian Antiques & Vintage on our show, but had time to tell me that her first appraisal of the show was for 12 items! “The first of these was a fabulous museum quality Thurman long musket circa 1800. The gun was in excellent condition and had not been converted nor sawn off. It was found in Newfoundland and appraised at $10,000.” The owner did not want photos taken.

Long line-up ½ hour prior to opening on Saturday.

Winners of a $50 voucher, good at any booth in the show, on Saturday were: Ed Smith from Hythe, Alberta and Gladys Podulec from St. Albert. Sunday’s winners were Ed Hanson and Lorraine Shewchuk with Show Chairman, Bernie Haber.

Show Conclusion

The 42nd Annual Wild Rose Antique Show has come and gone. This was my 6th term as Show Director/Show Chairman. This year we ended up in Halls G & H, for the same price as Hall E, but 337 spaces compared to 255 spaces.

As usual the show would not be a success without the help and assistance of other club members. Thus, I would like to thank the Wrist-banding crew of Bob & Carol Snyder, Alan Thain, John Duke, and Debbie Coulbourn; Bill Borgwardt for his fine job of advertising the show and getting us CFCW sponsorship; Nancy Ross for looking after the Pre-sale tickets; Gord Soch for getting our posters printed; Donna Ziegler for looking after the Show Office on set-up day and Saturday and to Doug & Karen Herd for doing the same on Sunday.

I would like to thank the other members of our executive as well: Marj Berg for looking after the displays and managing our Facebook page; Clinton Beck for looking after website advertising; and Tom Fritz for handling all the expenses. I would like to thank all the other members who volunteered to “man” the club table and to provide security for the displays. I also want to thank the members who were vendors and finally my Dear Wife, Kim for “letting me” have our house full of show paper work.

Possible dates for our 43rd show next year, if we want Hall E, are March 30 & 31 (Easter) or April 21 & 22.

Respectfully Submitted

Bernie Haber, WRAC Show Chair

Inside the Beatles 10 cent “Long Eating Licorice Record” vintage display box (cover photo). This was only available in England in 1964 by Clevedon Confectionary Ltd. The licorice is shaped like a 45 and packed in a record sleeve. There are 5 for each of the Beatles. Notice the names of Beatles songs on the box.

The vendor, who received the box from his uncle, had $1,800 on the price tag. Seen at our Show.

Inheriting Grandma’s Treasures

By Johanne Yakula

Dealing with your estate now

• Talk to those who you want to inherit your belongings.• Separate monetary value from sentimental value.• Decide how you want to disperse of your estate.• Once you know what is important to the family, make a list of who you would like to receive what.• Consider attaching conditions to inheriting something.• Blended families – speak with your heart or speak to a lawyer.• Think very carefully of who your executor should be.• Pick one, not two executors. Always have an alternate executor.• Don’t create situations that make it hard or expensive to follow your wishes.• If no one wants your treasures, or you can see that there may be problems, then sell them yourself and

split the money or keep it for yourself.

When you are ready to do so:

• What do you have?• Do research• Hire a general appraiser to go through your home with you to separate the marketable from the

unmarketable.• Do not ask for an insurance appraisal or a value appraisal (what you could expect to see the item for in a

store).• Do not have a dealer go through your possessions until you have an idea of value.

How do you find out about antiques?

• Look up marks.• Get information about the object and from books.• Look up the prices online (do good description, then add “for sale” at the end).• Visit shops, antique malls, antique shows, and speak to dealers. Look at the prices similar objects go

for.• Be aware that you will only get 40 – 50 % of the posted price – perhaps even less depending on the

object.• If the objects’ values are not worth the work to sell them, then use them in good health or donate them to

charities such as Finds and Catholic Social Services.
