The Root of Our Success: Our Donors

I wish to extend a special thanks and gratitude to our friends and alumni who have made significant financial donations to our College of Nursing. Thanks to our generous donors, the College raised $6 million during our most recent capital campaign. These funds generated additional scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and instructional support, research support, simula-tion centers on our three campuses, Children and Family Healthcare Center, and much more.

At our scholar donor luncheon on March 31, 2016, we celebrated a theme en-titled, The Root of Our Success. The embodiment of this theme became very pal-pable to me as I looked around the room in the new Alumni Center during our event. Our donors (current and former faculty, alumni, friends, parents, founda-tion executives) sat next to their student(s) and/or faculty recipient. Our donors’ generous financial support provides a foundation for our next generation of nurse leaders and scholars as they begin sprouting, growing, and flourishing in their young careers. During an emotional testimony, one of our graduate students graciously acknowledged the needed financial support, but as importantly, her re-newed boost of confidence from others investing in her future. She affirmed that her confidence will continue to blossom from the seed planted from this generous investment.

Your financial gifts, time, service, and other stewardship are paramount as we con-tinue our pursuit of state and regional impact coupled with global prominence. The strong roots will continue to set forth a foundation for decades to come for our future nursing leaders and healthcare delivery in South Carolina and beyond. As the Dean, I humbly thank you for believing in us and investing in our future.

VITAL SIGNS....An Update from Alumni and Development

Donor Spotlight: Vicki Sims, BSN (‘74)

The Class of 1966 celebrated their 50th reunion at the McCutcheon House. In at-tendance: Suzanne Dixon Thomas, Felecia Reames Boyd, Sue Skipper Harman, Gail Watkins Ford, Susan Park Kyzer, Pamela Dernoga Phillips, Becky Smoak Parrish and Susan Fletcher Clark.

The College of Nursing hosted guests at a USC Base-ball game. Jim Seigler, BJ Roof and Caroline Seigler cheered the Gamecocks to victory.

Vicki Sims started her career in the OR at Baptist Hospi-tal during a summer elective class at the CON. After grad-uation, she worked briefly in Columbia and then moved on to Egleston the Children’s Hospital at Emory, and in 1977 moved to Houston to begin a 35 year career at Texas Children’s Hospital.

Donors Honored

The College of Nursing recognized scholarship do-nors, recipients and philanthropy award winners at the bi-annual Scholar Donor and Award Recognition Luncheon on Thursday, March 31, at the USC Alum-ni Center.

The luncheon featured speakers from around the uni-versity including Dean Jeannette Andrews, Charlotte Parks, Sr. AVP for Development at USC, Greta Green, chair of the college’s Partnership Board, and nursing students and alumni.

Students Corner

Ashley Sirianni successfully defend-ed her DNP thesis, “Multi‐Symptom Management in Hospice Patients dur-ing End‐of‐Life Transition.”

Our College of Nursing Heroes, Brianna Cook, Lauren Dunlap, Becca Shan-non, and Georgia Heckel (nominated by Dr. Patrick Hickey) were honored at the 7th Annual StandUpCarolina awards.

Jamie Lawson’s poster received the first place student education poster award at SNRS. The post-er, “Translating Research to Practice: Findings and Implications of a Multi-Method Exploration of Undergraduate Students’ Exposure to Cultural and Linguistic Diversity,” was co-authored by Dr. DeAnne Messias.

CON graduate programs among nation’s best

The College of Nursing’s master’s program ranked 58 overall in the new rankings (No. 40 among public universities). In the last two years alone, the program has moved up 21 slots.

In a new program ranking for 2017, Carolina’s doctor of nursing practice program ranked No. 49 nationally (No. 34 among publics). Read more Here.

at the fire department. We will be screening for blood pressure and blood sugar problems while

Newsletter Distributionwe are going to start rewarding 40 points per aca-

demic year starting next year for those who are will-ing to pass out the newsletter in one of their nursing dominated classes once a month in the beginning of

the month. The student must be confident enough to be a leader and a liaison for his or her fellow students.

How: Please email Kristin Bolek if you have an interest in becoming a newsletter distributor.

We are excited to see you on April 12th at 6pm in WMBB231 for the last meeting of the semester. We will be distributing graduation cords at this meeting to the May 2016 grads as well as talking about future leadership opportunities. We are excited to welcome new freshmen and sophomores into our Association!

During the Capstone Scholars spring break ISL trip to Nicaragua, Taylor Harrison and Dr. Patrick Hickey traveled to a rural clinic where they met Carin. They discov-ered she is attending nursing school and presented her with a stethoscope and BP cuff to have and practice with.

SNA Members, Sydney Elmore, President, Em-ily Davis, President-Elect, and Marissa Cantwell, Vice President spent the week in Orlando, FL at the National Student Nurses Association annual conven-tion discussing and passing legislation that will be implemented into nursing practice.

The College of Nursing held it’s 15th Annu-al Research and Scholarship Day which Fea-turing The Mary Ann Parsons Lectureship with keynote speaker Dr. Abigail Sewell. The following awards were presented at research day: Best Undergraduate Poster, Mary-Madison Drig-gers, Best Graduate Poster, Sally Singleton, Most Outstanding Poster, Caylee Cook. Dr. Sue Heiney recieved awards for both the Best Faculty Research Mentor and the Best Student Research Mentor.

The 2016 Annual Leadership Summit

The 2016-2017 Cockcroft Fellows group.

Over 120 nurses attended the 2016 Annual Leadership Summit and Deans And Directors Education Workshop held at Seawells in Columbia, SC on Friday, March 25th. The One Voice, One Plan Future of Nursing Action Co-alition and the Deans and Directors hosted the Summit. The Center for Nursing Leadership and the South Carolina Hospital Association sponsored the event.

Dr. Sheryl Mitchell and Mikel Hand presented “Advance Directives in Care Provision for Incarcerated Adults: A Scoping Review,” at the Midwest Nursing Research Society Conference.

Cheryl Nelson, DeOnna Greenwood, Susan Bev-erung and Gail Vereen represented the College of Nursing at the Midlands Heart Walk.

The Children and Family Healthcare Practice has been recogized by Select Health First Choice. Patients were evaluated by Select Health in terms of the care the patients received and they also looked at primary care for HEDIS outcomes, Cost Effectiveness, and Open to Accepting new members. Stephanie Burgess, Associate Dean of Practice, stated, “The Children and Family Healthcare Practice is an excellent example of a SC Nurse Practitioner practice that increases access to care, saves taxpayers money, and provides high quality care to the Communities at large. Being recognized by Select Health First Choice affirms these findings and demonstrates the need for changing Nurse Practitioner scope of practice laws in order to remove barriers to access and care. The rec-ognition is based on Select Health First Choice pa-tients who were seen at our NP practice. First Choice looked at our practice for primary care for HEDIS outcomes, cost effectiveness, and timeliness in accept-ing new members at our practice. The NPs and Staff at CFHP are to be congratulated on doing an excel-lent job!”

On March 8th, the Graduate PMHNP Team (Drs. Tena McKinney, Kathrene Brendell and Ms. Courtney Fleck) met with the SC Depart-ment of Mental Health, Directors of Mental Health Centers from across the state. They presented information on the USC CON PM-HNP program including student preparation, unique NP models of care, innovative solutions to mental health care in rural and underserved areas, and ways to incorporate PMHNP stu-dents into their systems as “pre-employment” opportunities for the state. The Team received a warm welcome at SCDMH headquarters and left the building with 5 Centers immediately requesting information on preceptor opportu-nities. The Team will be heading out on the road to meet with Center providers and other key stakeholders to discuss their vision for in-creasing access to mental health care in SC.

Dr. Ronit Elk presented “ Developing A Culturally Tailored Palliative Care Program with Guidance from Rural African Ameri-can and White Community Members: A Program By the Community, for the Com-munity” at the 2016 Annual Assembly of the American Academy of Hospice and Pal-liative Medicine and the Hospice and Pal-liative Nurses Association in Chicago, IL. Dr. Elk has also been approved as a member of the Palliative Care Research Cooperative, a national palliative care research organiza-tion.

Dr. Tisha Felder received the 2016 Andrew Billingsley Faculty Award.

Dr. Shelli Gibbs passed the Family Nurse Practitioner board certification.
