Steve Kidd - President, GCRPresident’s Corner

This month the focus of this article will again return to the Parade 2011. I just visited the PCA website and was happy to see that 26 of the 611 registrants are from Goldcoast region…..However, I’ve talked to many more of you and know some entries are in the works and hope we can get that number up to 40. Some of you expressed that you want to go but can’t, due to time constraints or finances and some of you hope to maybe sneak up there for a few days to participate where possible and cheer on our team. As many of you are aware Team Goldcoast (Thanks to Pedro Bonilla) has secured a block of rooms at the Baymont Inn and Suites on Main street in Savannah, about 3 miles from the host hotel. Room prices are about $72.00 a night compared to about $200+ a night at the host hotel. Please join Dottie and I and many others at the Baymont….I guarantee that’s where the party crowd will be…and hopefully the celebrations when Goldcoast region takes home some major awards. Please keep up with the e-mail blasts and website updates for the latest parade news. For those that are a little behind on club news, the 2011 Porsche Parade will be in Savannah Ga., running from July 31-August 6. As said before, if you plan on driving to a parade, this is the year to do it, since the parade rotates locations and will not be within a day’s drive for quite a number of years. We are organizing a Tour to Savannah for Parade participants to travel as group from a central meeting point in our region straight up to Savannah. We plan on having 2 dates to leave; Friday morning for the Concours crowd or Saturday morning for the AutoX group. Goldcoast will have a commemorative t-shirt for Tour participants which will be entered in the parade t-shirt contest. We plan to open the Tour for registration on clubregistration.net in the near future, so stay tuned for more information via e-mail blasts. Let me return to the Parade awards component and give everyone an update on the awards we applied for and recognize those that made significant contributions to the award submission effort. Website Award…This award is given annually to the region(s) with the most outstanding web sites. Class winners are recognized based on their region size. Our website looks great and is always current. Recently we have added lots of new features and we have been measuring ourselves against past winners and checking to make sure we improved in areas suggested by last year’s judges. We have some intense competition in our class, however if I was a gambler I would say this is our year to score a website trophy! Laz Ortega, our web master, has done an amazing job and loves what he does and employing new technology….Just visit our web site to see what I mean. In addition he did all the work that was needed to submit our proposal….Go LazNewsletter award…This award is given annually to the region(s) with the most outstanding newsletters. Class winners are recognized based on their region size. We have made steady improvement to our newsletter each year, being careful not to upset the 60/40 balance of content to advertising. Our newsletter is filled with great photos about our cars, our members and our activities.

Our editor, Roger Fabel submitted 2 excellent examples for the competition and we have our fingers crossed that the judges will recognize his talents and efforts this year. Enthusiast of the Year… Commonly known as the Porsche Club of America Enthusiast of the Year Award, this award is presented to the individual who best exemplifies the spirit and guidelines of PCA. It is awarded each year at the PCA annual Parade. Based on nominations from the various clubs regions, the PCA Executive Council selects the most deserving nomination. We totally revamped last year’s entry and with Steve Kidd doing the writing and Joe Rodi doing the graphics we put together a stunning nomination for our Enthusiast candidate, Mike Tarter. Mike was easy to write about because he does so much good stuff for our region, our zone and the club overall. My thanks again to Joe for all the hard work and talent in making the submission a masterpiece, and to Mike for his years of “high octane” service to the club. Mike already won the PCA family of the year award about 10 years ago and this would be a well earned honor to add this award to his trophy case Family of the Year…This award is presented to a Porsche Club of America family which best exemplifies the spirit and guidelines of PCA. It is awarded each year at the PCA annual Parade. Based on nominations from the various regions, the PCA Executive Council selects the most deserving nomination. Our new rising stars, the Ortega family, was nominated for this award by our region and what a story they had to tell! Again, the combination of Steve Kidd and Joe Rodi put together a great presentation. The Ortegas were active as a family in every type of event in 2010, especially autoX and DE, where they keep on recruiting more family members to buy Porsches, join the region and bond together in the family fun. Let’s cheer on Alex Sr. Alex Jr, Vivian and Sasha in our efforts to crown them PCA family of the year. Region of the Year (Ferry Porsche Trophy)…More commonly known as the Region of the Year Award, this award is presented to the most outstanding region which best exemplifies the guidelines and goals of PCA. It is awarded each year at the PCA annual Parade. This award was first presented at the sixth Parade in 1961and is sponsored by the Porsche factory and Porsche Cars North America (PCNA) in the memory of Dr. Ferdinand (Ferry) Porsche . I am always amazed when a member shines through with talents I never knew existed….This time it was our often shy and humble Technical writer, Pedro Bonilla that stepped up and not only did a great job researching and writing the article, be also did all the graphics and put together a world class presentation. I know we face some fierce competition however I think we got a winner….Great job Pedro President’s Parade Trophy…This award is presented to the Region having the greatest number of cars at the Parade, considering the size of the Region and distance traveled. Please return to the 1st paragraph and read my lips…Register now.… no excuses…If all those that promised to sign up do, we have a really good chance.

Everyone is now required to pre register. The preferred way is on line at Clubregistration.net…You may also pre pay/ pre register by sending in the AutoX registration form / check to Dottie Kidd PO BOX 5606 Pompano Beach, Fl 33074. If we do allow on-site Registration, a $10.00 late fee will be charged. Call Alex at (561) 847-1876 with any registration issues. A “roll-over” may be provided if you miss an event and call at least 24 hours prior to the start of the event with a valid reason and pay a $10.00 administrative fee. If we do allow an onsite entry, a $ 10.00 Late fee is mandatory.

Please consult the GCR web site and Kassette for all Autocross photos & results.

Porsche classes are loosely based on the PCR’s for medium size regions, with minor regional adjustments. The major difference will be the addition of NM (novice men) and NW (novice women) classes. These classes are strictly for new comers only …no prior Autox ,DE, or other motorsport experience. Please see Steve for any car class questions or if you wish to run in a novice. We reserve the right to make additional class/rule changes as needed.

Our 2011 series will be based on 7 events. To be eligible for an end of the year award, competitors must run in at least 4 events in the same class. Each competitor’s top 4 finishes will be calculated and an end of the year class champion and possibly runner up (depending on class size) will be chosen. In case of a tie, additional events will be added until the tie is broken. Year end champion trophies will be presented at the December Holiday Party, along with A-team and other special recognition awards

The sun was shining as the tires shredded at Bank Atlantic center. We had a total outcome of 62 registrants and everybody received 10 runs. Since we redefined timing we are more efficient in recording times, thus allowing us to squeeze 10 runs in. Also, if you go to www.goldcoastregion.org on your mobile device you can view live results as the cars roll threw the finish. If you are a novice, have no fear we have instructors waiting for you! Parade is approaching fast, so if you have not registered for the Autocross please do so. I am trying to wrangle up as many Autocrossers from Gold Coast Region as possible. I would like to have the most attendance at parade.

Message from the Autocross

Welcome to the Die Porsche Kassette, a monthly magazine of the Gold Coast Region of PCA. If you have a Porsche related story that you would like to share with photos, please e-mail the information so we can place it in the “From Our Members” section in the Kassette. Please limit articles to one page. E-mail them to [email protected]. We received many great reviews about our new “Porsche History” section submitted by GCR member Rodger Hawley. This month we have an article on the history of PCA that provided by Ruben Ledesma. Look for future articles in our Porsche History section.

I hope you were able to attend our GCR Spring Fling. This year we had a record crowd and a full concours. Our site was larger and made a great location for our event with ample room for the beautiful cars that were on display. Check out the review on page 14 with our photo gallery. Thanks to all of the volunteers that made this annual event so enjoyable.

Editor’s NotesRoger Fabel - Editor

This year we are planning for a large attendance to Parade by Gold Coast. I hope the last issue was informative for those who have never been to a Parade. The officers and board have worked hard to submit several GCR members and the region for many of the award categories at Parade. Check out the web site for more details and join us at Savannah for a great week with PCA friends and all of the Porsches from all over the nation.

The social committee continues to find more new spots to rally, dine and socialize. Check out the flyers and sign up so you don’t miss out. Who knew we had a vineyard in south Florida, check it out on page 29 and join us for a rally and wine tasting tour in the Redlands.

We would like to welcome the new members to Gold Coast. Hope to see you at the next event. If you have any questions about the club please call one of our

board members. Roger

Tech Corner: Brake Fluid Q/A

What exactly is brake fluid? There are two basic types of brake fluid: silicone-based (DOT 5) and glycol-based (DOT 3, DOT 4, DOT 5.1). But there are also several classifications within those two types, based on their boiling points.Silicone-based fluids are generally used in military-type vehicles, and cannot be used with ABS systems because they don’t lubricate the pump like a glycol-based fluid does, so we won’t mention them again.Polyalkylene Glycol Ether - based fluid is what we have in our cars. The Department of Transportation (DOT) classifies it based on it’s boiling point temperatures.

Wet Boiling Point Dry Boiling Point

DOT 3 284º F (140 ºC) 401ºF (205 ºC)

DOT 4 311º F (155 ºC) 446º F (230 ºC)

DOT 5.1 375º F (190 ºC) 518º F (270 ºC)

What is boiling point?Wet boiling point is the minimum temperature at which the brake fluid will begin to boil when the brake system contains 3% water by volume in the system.

Dry boiling point is the temperature at which that brake fluid will boil with no water present in the system.

But if my system is closed, how can it get contaminated with moisture?Well, glycol-based brake fluid is very hygroscopic. This means that it will aggressively absorb water from the moment the container is opened.

The most powerful system in your car is also the most important and many times one of the most neglected.I’m referring to your brakes, and in particular to the hydraulic fluid also known as brake fluid.

Why do I say that it’s the most powerful? Many people think that the most powerful system in their car is their engine, which, in a Porsche, can develop 300+ HP and can accelerate the (3000+ lbs) car from 0 to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds. But consider this: Your brakes have to decelerate your car much quicker!A modern Porsche can go from 60 to 0 mph in just under 2 seconds. That makes the braking system much more powerful than your engine.

Why do I say that it’s one of the most neglected?Because many, many people have never replaced the hydraulic fluid in their brakes.Porsche recommends doing a complete flush every 2 years, but if you track your car you should flush prior to every event, because the boiling point of the fluid can drop to a potentially dangerous level due to moisture contamination and may not even meet the Federal requirements for brake fluid.

11

Page 12: April 2011 Kassette

Tech Corner: Brake Fluid Q/A (continued)Many manufacturers pack brake fluid under nitrogen to extend its shelf life. Brake fluid will absorb water through minute, even microscopic pores in brake hoses, lines and piston seals and when it is exposed to air. In South Florida, where the humidity level is usually very high the problem is exaggerated. Also, as caliper and brake line temperatures increase and then cool repeatedly, condensation occurs, leaving behind an increase in moisture.

How can moisture deteriorate the fluid?Over time the moisture becomes trapped in the internal sections of calipers, lines, master cylinders, etc. Brakes generate heat because of the friction between the pad and the rotor and rotors can actually glow red at track events. When this trapped water reaches 212º F it turns into steam (water vapor). Many times air in the brake system is a result of water that has turned to water vapor. The build up of steam will create a higher pressure in the system, sometimes to the point that enough pressure is created to push caliper pistons into the brake pads. This will in turn generate brake drag as the rotor and pads make contact and will also create more heat in the system. Water vapor (steam) is a gas. Gas is much more compressible than liquid. So, when you get enough water vapor in the system and you press the brake pedal hard, it will compress the water vapor before the pistons push the pads into the rotors, giving you a “mushy” pedal feel, or brake-fade.

So, which fluid is the recommended one? There are several excellent brake fluids on the market which are suitable for Porsche brake systems. Obviously the Porsche-brand is what comes in our cars but many enthusiasts tend to switch to other brands such as ATE, Motul, Castrol, Brembo, AP, Pentosin or others due to availability, cost and or performance.

Page 13: April 2011 Kassette

Because I replace my fluid so often (once per month – as I attend DEs and AXs on a regular basis) I personally use ATE Gold and ATE Super Blue. Both are the same except for the color. By alternating colors you can actually see when the new (fresh) color makes it through the system and that way you don’t use more than needed. One liter of fluid is enough to completely flush the brake and clutch hydraulics in a Porsche.

What do I need to remember? If fluid is changed often with fresh fluid it will contain very little waterNever use silicone-based fluids in your Porsche

Using racing fluid will increase the braking performance of your systemNever reuse fluid or mix brandsUse smaller fluid containers and discard remnantsWhen replacing fluid, flush the complete systemImmediately replace the reservoir’s cap following any maintenance

For more information on brake systems and more, please visit my website at: www.PedrosGarage.com.

Happy Porsche-ing,Pedro

GCR - PCA Spring Fling 2011This was an extremely successful event. Our turnout was more than we ever had and overall, everything went better than expected. We had about 185 people and about 80 cars.

We had a wide variety of dishes and drinks and everyone had a great time. There was a lot of delicious food, great games, a t-shirt table, a full concours and a tech quiz.

I want to say thanks to Ruben Ledesma (PCA National Vice President) for writing the quiz and to Steve Kidd for conducting the quiz.

One of the best aspects of the day was the full concours. This was put together and run by Fred Kohly and his team. lot of people had never taken part in a full concours before so they were not sure what to expect. I think we had about 27 cars up for the challenge. Co-incidentally, DWS Investments also sponsored the trophies, which is the company Fred works for. This was very well put together and many thanks and a hats off to Fred. Below is a list of the winners:

1950 – 1959First place – Jay Cerola

1960 – 1969First place – Felipe Tavares

Second place – Denny Zamler

1970 – 1979First place – Steve Boza

In summary, the weather was great, the atmosphere was inviting, the cars were on show and everyone was happy. Thank you to everyone who helped and contributed to make this event a great one with special thanks to the Ortega family, the Kidd family, the Kohly family and the Lawrence family for all their hard work and support.

Picture this. It’s dusk in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains. You’re winding along a road that, until just this moment, you’d only experienced in your dreams. From time to time, the canopy of trees that cloaks the snaking asphalt parts to let a sliver of moonlight pass.

All you hear is a rising and falling of the engine’s revs. All you see is a wickedly winding white line that separates you from the darkness. All you feel is a crisp evening breeze rushing through your hair.

It’s been five minutes since you reached the mountain pass and started down the northern side; it seems like only a few precious seconds. Suddenly, you burst from the protective grasp of the maples into the expanse of valley that spans toward Little Switzerland. The ribbon of road straightens, and you feel your right foot push reflexively to the floor. The

Blue Ridge Boxster Summit 2011

engine’s song climbs sweetly, and the stiffening wind chills the back of your neck.

In your headlights, wisps of steam curl upward, the road wet from a recent shower. But now the clouds have parted. In front of you, the brilliant moon illuminates Porsches as far as your eyes can see. Behind you, it’s the same.

Can you picture it? You should experience it. Blue Ridge Boxster Summit ...

engine’s song climbs sweetly, and the stiffening wind chills the back of your neck.

Florida Fancy Feasts

Selected recipes are reproduced from the above cook book. A few copies of this vintage (1986) cookbook are available from the Goodie Store. Contact Mike Joffee at 954-476-6006.

Joyce F. MinnichLuncheon Salad½ c. diced Swiss cheese ¼ c. sliced almonds½ c. diced turkey, cooked ½ c. pineapple chunks, 2 chopped boiled eggs drained (set aside the ¼ c. raisins juice)Bed of lettuce and spinach, MixedSoak raisins and almonds in pineapple juice for approximately 1 hour before combining ingredients to serve with the following dressing. Dressing:1 tsp. celery seed 2 tsp. brown sugar¼ c. oil 1/8 tsp. dry mustard2 tsp. wine vinegar ¼ c. pineapple juice Serves 2 large luncheon portions.

Barbara Pelak, Big Cypress Region

Salad Wymond All amounts are approximate.2 c. cooked chicken breast, 4 c. torn lettuce (us- skinned and torn into bite- ually iceberg, but size any mix will do)6 hard-boiled eggs, sliced 1 jar Thousand Island 1 lb. bacon, fried crisply and dressing crumbled

Mix the above ingredients in a big bowl and toss it gently until mixed, then add 1 jar Thousand Island dressing. Add dressing just before serving and mix it until all the salad pieces are fully coated. Don’t be afraid, you can’t use too much, but you can use too little. Serves 4.

A great company dish for anytime of year. Buy some spiced peaches in the jar and depending on the season, serve them hot or cold. Fry some grits in squares and butter some hard rolls and no one will go away hungry. Serve some vanilla ice cream in cantaloupe halves with crème de menthe drizzled over and you don’t even have to work hard! This is an old family recipe and guaranteed to be easy!

Joni Phillips, Suncoast Region

Taco Salad1 lb. ground beef chuck ½ c. chopped onions1 pkg. taco seasoning ½ c. sliced ripe olives1 medium size head of 1 c. shredded Monteray lettuce, torn into pieces Cheddar cheese1 pt. cherry tomatoes, ½ c. (or more) Catalina cut into halves dressing½ c. chopped green 1 (5 ½ oz. pkg. corn chips pepper or Doritos

Brown meat in a skillet; drain off excess fat. Add taco seasoning and mix well. Cool. In a large bowl, mix all vegetables, cheese and olives. Mix well and chill. Just before serving, stir in the seasoned beef and Catalina dressing. Crumble about half of the corn chips into this and toss lightly to mix. Garnish with whole ripe olives and corn chips.

This recipe is rather flexible, in that you can add a little more seasoning, salt and pepper to taste and more lettuce and chips to stretch it a bit. Do use enough Catalina dressing to make up for the extras. As a slight variation, you can also add 8 ounces of cooked rotini into the vegetables. Every time I serve it, either way, everyone raves about it.

The Real Deal: My Porsche Factory & Museum Tour in Stuttgart, Germany by Richard Diaz

In February 2011, I was informed by my employer that I would be attending the launch of two new Audi models in Munich, Germany. Immediately, my mind started thinking of a way to include a side trip to Stuttgart to visit the Porsche Factory & Museum. I quickly made my plans and called Larry Reynolds, at Champion Porsche, to arrange a factory tour with short notice. Two days later, Larry called me with great news, my tours were set for the days that I had requested. I was all set to spend a great day at the Porsche Works in Stuttgart.

Upon arriving at the Porsche Museum on Thursday morning, I checked in and waited for my factory tour to begin. Our tour guide was a young girl named Tania, who was very knowledgeable and courteous guide. Our small group of ten people, first went to the final assembly building. We followed the assembly process, where the freshly painted bodies arrived from the paint shop to final assembly. We were able to see many Porsche models, which included the new Speedsters, Cup cars, Boxsters and other 911 models. The only robotic operation was during final assembly, which involved the installation of the windshield. We walked the length of the entire line, stopping and getting to observe the process at each station. All assembly was done by hand using pneumatic tools. The workers’ sense of pride was quite evident as they assembled one of the world’s highest quality automobiles. When we reached the end of the completed cars assembly, cars are tested before going to the shipping facility. We proceeded to the engine ship.

Our group crossed the street and entered the engine assembly building, where Porsche builds all the production engines. We walked the entire line for the flat six and V-8 engine. We also were shown the dynometers that are used for the testing of the engines to ensure quality. Our factory tour was a little over two hours and was a fascinating view into the production process of our beloved Porsches! I have visited several other manufacturers’ assembly plants and visiting the Stuttgart factory, confirmed that we choose to drive one of the very best built cars in the world!

The New Porsche Museum opened in January 2009, which was the second half of my day. No one was allowed to photograph the factory tour, but the museum is a photographer’s playground paradise! Architecturally, this is one of the most striking museum buildings. As you ride the escalator that goes to the exhibits, the anticipation heightens; you wonder which legendary models will be on exhibition. Cars are displayed in chronological order of the Porsche’s family achievements. Here I found design studies, significant street and racecars, plus significant exploded engine displays. Please enjoy the photographs. You will see aluminum-bodied speedsters, original 911RS and some of the exclusive personal cars that were built for the Porsche family, such as a 914-8. If you are ever in Germany, both tours are truly a must see!

Porsche History: Porsche Club of America

Bill Sholar, PCA’s founder served as the first President, created the original PCA logo and badge, started Porsche Panorama.

Bill and Virginia Sholar with their 356 in Murano, Italy during the first PCA Treffen in 1958

Bill Sholar was the founder of PCA. A commercial artist in the Washington, D.C. area in the early 1950’s, he was also an admirer of well designed automobiles and thus purchased his fist Porsche, a 1953 356 coupe. As time passed, Bill met other Porsches on the road, always blinking his headlights in silent greeting. By late 1954, Bill was convinced that a more personal meeting would be appropriate with other Porsche owners to discuss the positive and not-so-positive aspects of driving the infrequently encountered marque. Following a first gathering in February 1955 at the Sholar house, several Porsche owners occasionally got together that spring and summer to share knowledge about the unique cars they drove. Eventually, they decided to start a club. A brief paragraph in the August 1955 issue of Sports Cars Illustrated informed readers that a Porsche club was being formed in the U.S.; all inquiries were directed to Bill Sholar’s attention. Additionally, the Porsche factory was petitioned for recognition of the proposed club. Officially titled the Porsche Club of America, the new organization held its first business meeting at Blackie’s Grille in Alexandria, Virginia on September 13, 1955 and Bill Sholar was elected President.

As more and more members joined outside the Washington area, regions were formed in other communities. The original Washington group became Potomac region, which remained the hub of activities.

First appearing in December 1955, the club’s monthly magazine, Porsche Panorama, kept all members, both nearby and remote, appraised of the latest technical information, factory news and events planned.

Early in 1956, Potomac Region arranged the first Porsche Parade as a gathering of all PCA members, and a blanket invitation was extended. Held at the Washingtonian Motel in Gaithersburg, Maryland, on August 29 through September 1, 1956, this first national Parade had 64 members in attendance.

In 1958, Bill Sholar organized the first Treffen to the Porsche factory in Stuttgart with 81 members participating in the journey. In 1963, Bill Sholar moved to a new position with Porsche of America Corporation, the U.S. Porsche importer. Well before he did so, PCA’s founder recommended his secretary, Jane Nestlerode, as his replacement as Executive Secretary of the club.

Bill Sholar’s vision 50 years ago has allowed us to enjoy the Porsche Club of America today with over 56,000 members and 139 regions in the U.S., including Alaska and Hawaii plus Puerto Rico and Canada.

This history of PCA was taken from a 1982 book celebrating Porsche Panorama and the first twenty-five years of the club.
