A Day-long Exhibition of Chihiro Iwasaki and Picture Books of Japan

The exhibition is an introduction of Iwasaki’s works, as well as those of other acclaimed picture book artists from Japan.

Chihiro Iwasaki (1918-1974) was an acclaimed, award-winning Japanese artist and illustrator of children’s books, who began to study sketching and oil painting at the age of 14. Her first work for children was a set of illustrated “papertheater” storytelling panels called Okasan no Hanashi (The Story of a Mother) in 1950. She received many awards including the Graphic Prize Fiera di Bologna for Kotori no Kuru Hi (The Pretty Bird) in 1971, and the Bronze Medal of the Leipzig International Book Fair.

One of the most popular books illustrated by Iwasaki is Totto-chan, the Little Girl at the Window. It was written by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi and was published in 1981 and has also been published in Hindi.

The exhibition has been brought to the Jawahar Kala Kendra, Jaipur by the Japan Foundation, New Delhi, in association with the Chihiro Art Museum, Japan.
