MERCADO MADNESS!

5th grade students are

wrapping up their piñata projects for Mercado. Did you know that the original piñata originated in China?

Spaniards, however, brought it to North America to entice and attract converts to their ceremonies. Little did they know that the indigenous

people already had a similar tradition.

To celebrate the birthday of the Aztec God of war,

Huitzilopochtli, priests lay clay pots on a pole in the

temple at year’s end. Colorful feathers adorned the richly decorated pot, filled with tiny treasures. When broken with a stick,

the treasures fell to the feet of the god’s image as an

offering. These and many more

history-filled projects will be found on the big day. Mark

your calendars for Tuesday May 24th. You don’t want to

miss it!

Lisa, was born and raised in San Antonio. In 1999, I moved to North Carolina. I married a United States Marine and was stationed at Cherry Point. For the past ten years, I have worked as a director and program coordinator for an elementary school in Havelock NC. I will be completing my bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education (birth-kindergarten) at the end of this month. I have a 3 yr old daughter, named Avery. I am so grateful to be a part of an awesome school. I look forward to an exciting school year.

Building Math Momentum

Students in Mrs. Torre’s Math Class collaborated learning styles in a variety of center-based activities. Students worked on review skills (to include

measurement/telling time), interpreted information from charts and graphs, and used math and reading strategies to achieve success with their work.

Stacey Profile:  Mr. Stephen Johann By: Dalvin Burns

At what schools have taught? I interned at Holmes High School for 6 months; taught at Holy Cross High School for 4 years and taught at Somerset High School for 3 years. What are some of your favorite hobbies? I enjoy fishing, sailing, and collecting old ceramic wall hanging heirlooms. Where did you grow up? I grew up in central New Jersey in a small “suburb” town named Glen Rock. Do you have any brothers or sisters? I had one younger brother who is now a successful banker in Florida. What do you like about Stacey? The students are the most appealing aspect of Stacey as most of them are mature and a bit worldly, probably due to their experiences living in other countries and parts of the U.S. What is your favorite core class? My favorite area of study and expertise is social studies generally and military history in particular. I have taught American History, World History, World Geography, Economics, and Government. What is your favorite food? My favorite dish is Paella, preferably seafood paella, a meal hard to find in the U.S. but which I became enamored with when I studied in Spain during high school. How long do you plan on being a teacher? I plan to remain in the teaching profession until I draw my last breath. What is your favorite movie? This is the toughest question to answer since I know and like so many movies (old and new) – My favorite classic black and white movie would probably be Casa Blanca , and my more contemporary choice would be The Right Stuff , although I am very attached to the first six James Bond movies starring Sean Connery. What was your first job? My first real part time job was working in a “supermarket” after school in high school; my first real summer job was working on the golf course of the Great Gorge Playboy Club, and my first full time job was as a 2nd Lt pilot trainee at Laughlin AFB, Del Rio Texas.

The Age of e-books in the Lackland ISD Media Center has Arrived!

Next week on Friday, April 29, the Lackland Media Center will begin circulating Kindle readers, pre-loaded with e-books and audio books,

to our Stacey students.

This e-reader program begins with an implementation of eight Kindles, each of which has multiple e-books and audio books. The

titles chosen come from some of the newest and best-selling young adult works, and they also include some of the classics that we think

readers would enjoy.

Students will need to return a Permission and Acceptable Use Policy sheet in order to participate. This form is found on the following page of this newsletter. The forms are also available in the high

school office or in the media center.

The sheet includes some information about the new program, as well as a place for parents and students to sign, accepting

responsibility for caring for the devices. We welcome any questions that you might have ([email protected])

There is no deadline for returning the permission form, but we do

plan to start checking out the first Kindles next week!
