Position:  (x) Location relative to a reference point.  (Coordinate System)

Distance:  a scalar, always positive.  How far you have moved...

Displacement = change in position (∆x). a vector  distance and direction.Displacement can be positive or negative

The new Call of Duty is about to come out and you just can't wait to school your friends.  You leave your house at midnight and walk 2 blocks north to the exchange to wait in line for one of the first copies.  You then walk 7 blocks south (back past your house) where your friends are waiting with controllers in hand.  What is your total displacement?  What is the total distance you walked?

You drive 3 km north and then 4 km east.   What is your distance?  What is your displacement?

Relative Motion:

All motion is relative to an observer.

Velocity:  Rate of change of displacement (vector)(how fast your position or direction is changing)

Note for constant acceleration, average velocity can also be calculated with:

Instantaneous Velocity  ≡  limit of average velocity as ∆t approaches zero, (The velocity of an object at any given moment)

What does your speedometer show?  Average Velocity or Instantaneous Velocity?
