The U13 team was Liam Knowles, Chris Kenneally, Dan Twomey and myself. The U11 team was Jude Mc Car- thy, Cahal Curtin, Jack O’ Crowley and Conor Daly. The team manager was Daniel Daly. U11 were in competition A and U13 were in competition B. There were 12 rounds in all with 6 questions in each round. The U11 team did very well and we were delighted when we heard we were in a tie breaker with 2 other schools for 1 st place in the U13 competition. The three tie breaker questions were really hard. One of the questions was ‘In what year was an assassination attempt made on Ronald Regan and Pope John Paul?’ We couldn’t believe it when they called us out as winners of the overall competition. We were delighted. We had to wait to get our photo taken and the four of us got a certificate and 25 euros! Following on from the wonderful success of last year’s Lego exhi-bition, the Clonakilty Games Festival 2016 will again celebrate the joy of Lego. This one day event will occur on Sat Feb 20th from 10am to 4pm (entries may be dropped from 9.00am). The exhibition seeks to celebrate all of those out there who enjoy the possibilities and creativity inspired by that most recognisable of little plastic bricks ‘Lego’. This ‘toy’ initially began in the 1930’s in the workshop of Ole Kirk Christiansen and its name referred to the Danish phrase ‘leg godt’, which means ‘play well’. By 1949 Lego had begun producing an early version of the famous interlocking bricks. This event seeks to inspire all creators out there to bring and dis-play their work as a means of inspiring others of the possibilities. Whether the creations are from a set or original designs all will be welcome. Both children and adults are invited to participate. This event is not a competition but instead seeks to celebrate the unique creativity of each individual. All participants will be invit-ed to partake in a draw for prizes which will take place at 4pm at the end of the exhibition by members of Clonakilty Games Festi-val Commitee. Happy Building! Our Visit to the Water Forum On the 22nd of January 2016 myself, Donnacha Walsh, Nathen Hanra-han and Cian O’Regan represented Scoil na mBuachaillí at the Wa-ter Forum in the Quality Hotel. Ms O’Regan accompanied us there. We arrived at the Quality Hotel at 10:00am on the morning of the Forum. There were also six other schools represented at the Water Forum. The first thing we did were activities based around water conservation. One school at the Forum then gave a presentation about what they did during the year to save water. It was very interesting and we learned new ideas from listening to them. Then the people in charge of the Water Forum did a couple of science experiments. After that we had our lunch at around 12:00pm. After our lunch we had to design our dream school but the design had to involve the saving of water. Then towards the end of the Forum everyone there got a goodie bag. The Water Forum ended then and we ar-rived back at school at about 1:00pm. Many thanks to Ms. Sinéad O’Regan for organising Green Schools in our school and to all the committee. By:David Price, 6th Class.

Children who were baptised outside of the parish of Clonakilty will have to send in a copy of their Baptismal Certificate (unless you have already done so). Please send in these certificates as soon as you can. Children in other classes who have not sent in their Baptismal Certificate can do so at any time – it will be photocopied and the original returned immediate-ly. For children in Junior Infants it is the ideal op-portunity to locate and send in your Baptismal Cer-tificate – we won’t have to ask for it ever again.

All cans gratefully received. Please contact Ms. Regina Fitzmaurice if you have any query re. this matter. Many thanks to Ms. Fitzmaurice.. She and her class will also look after the school garden and glasshouse. The money that is collected by this scheme is used in the school garden. Thanks to Ja-mie and Sam for helping with cans this year.

Our annual Spelling Bee will take place soon in the school. Boys from Rang 5 agus Rang 6 will participate and just one boy will qualify to go to Cork to compete in the County Competition. The competition is being organised by Ms. Fitzmaurice, Mr. Harte, Ms. O’Keeffe, Ms. O’Neill and Mr. O’Neill in our school and we thank them for giving the boys the opportunity to participate in this National Competition.

As you may know we are

now running the

LITERACY LIFT-OFF

PROGRAMME throughout

the school (from Junior

Infants – Sixth).

Part of this programme

requires a parent/carer to

read with their child

EVERY DAY at home.

In the Junior classes the entire short book is to be read and in the Senior

Classes it may be a chapter of the book.

The parent/ carer then signs the sheet accompanying the book. It should be

an enjoyable session taking no more than ten minutes.

After reading, you might discuss the book eg. What do you think is going

to happen? What was your favourite part ? Did you like the ending? Who

was your favourite character? Can you relate to what happened?

If you have any concerns about helping your child to read you can contact

your class teacher or Ms. Carol O’Boyle at 8834487. Please ask Thelma

to make an appointment. You will be amazed the difference your input

can make to your child’s reading!

To be a good reader takes PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!! It

is so important that you play your part.

*** If you would like to help out and be part of our LLO team we would very much appreciate it. Please contact Carol at 8834487. We are ex-tremely fortunate that we have so many willing to help in the school - without their help we could not run the programme. **** REMEMBER: PLEASE ENSURE YOUR CHILD RETURNS HIS BOOKS EVERY DAY TO SCHOOL. THEY ARE NEEDED BY YOUR SON OR BY OTHER CHILDREN. This is very important as a lot of teaching time can be lost ringing parents to bring back books to the school. It’s in everyone’s interest to ensure that books are returned each day and the form signed by you - the parents. WANTED: Any spare books/novels would be greatly appreciated by Car-ol O’Boyle, the boys and her Literacy Lift Off team.

“Just One” Cent boxes continue again this year. Jack, Eoin and Adam will be in charge of organising the col-lection each week. This year we have got off to a great start with

the Hoola Hoop Coin Challenge. So far we have collected €1404.11 this year! This has passed out last year’s total al-ready. Well done, Declan Murphy was very impressed when he visited the school and saw the work going on.

Every week on a Friday the boys call to each classroom to collect the money that has been brought in during the week.

If you would like to book an ad for the coming school year 2014 -2015 please let Thelma know as soon as possible. The number of ads is limited. Our Links goes to all parents in the school - 10 times a year - at the beginning of each month. The cost is €20 per issue or at a discount of €150 for the entire year! Please ring Thelma 8834487 if you are interested.

This very popular scheme has started again, for all classes except Junior Infants. Stamps cost €1 each. Junior Infants will start collecting later in the year. Thanks to Eileen O’Dono-van for her assistance. Children in Rang 6 have to use this scheme for saving for their Surfing lessons and boys in Rang 5 have to use this scheme for Kayaking.

Hi my name is Harold Paulino and I am one of the members of the School Debate Team. On the 27th of January, 16 pupils from 6th class all competed for a spot on the Debating Team. The topic was “Children should be in bed by 9pm”. All gave very good points but in the end only 6 people got chosen for the team. There are 3 people are on the team and there are 3 subs and 4 researchers. The debating team will go up ahead against other schools in the coming week. We hope that we will be successful.

Good luck to Ms. Carol Anne O’Brien and the school basket-ball team who are travelling to Cork on Wednesday 9th of Feb-ruary to compete in the interschool basketball competition. Many thanks to Ms. O’Brien for coaching the boys after school throughout the year. Thanks also to Mr. Paddy Rose and Mr. Denis Murphy who are bringing the boys to Cork.

Dear Parents, a number of fees are still outstanding for Term 2. We will send a reminder in February to the relevant parents. Photocopying (Term 2) : €10.00 French: Term 2 - (2nd - 6th) €6.00 Elocution: Infants to Rang 2: €7.00 Most parents paid for the above in September.

Reminder: If you are not collecting your child on a particular day but a friend or a relative is, please notify us about this by: a note in your child’s bag/lunchbox telephone the school on 8834487 email the school on [email protected] We cannot allow a person who is not a parent or a designated contact person to take your child without your permission.

It would be so much safer if you did not bring children across the road by the hand at 3.00 p.m. often crossing between cars and traffic, which can be dangerous and may even encourage another child to at-tempt the same on his own with possible disastrous consequences. Please, always use the wardens, when on duty and, at the very least, the zebra crossing which is there for this purpose. Thank you.

Sustainable Clonakilty have come up with a great idea for Lent which could save us all money. What’s involved? Each night for the month of Lent before going to bed your child would go around every room in the house and turn off/plug out any appliances/lights that are not being used. Hopefully this would continue after Lent is over as you will notice the savings in your electricity bill. We are doing this in school already for Green Schools but it would be even better if it continued at home. Many thanks to Ray Lucey for this idea.
