“Be not just hearers of the word only, but doers!” James 1:22

Some months ago, St. Mary’s Parish Lucan held an open meeting of parishioners to plan for a proposed Parish Synod or Assembly; while it was

reasonably well attended it failed to attract any significant number of new

faces. The evening was nonetheless a fruitful one at which priorities for taking the process of parish renewal and development were identified. The

Pastoral Council have sifted through the various responses and have identified

key areas and priorities that need development. Ideas however need to be implemented and that means people committing themselves to the doing! It

would be a great shame if all we end up with are aspirations and goals without

the where-with-all to make things happen. Hot air may get balloons off the

ground but in a parish, nothing gets off the ground without the commitment of people. St. Mary’s has a long and rich tradition of parishioners who make things happen by their generous

commitment and we want to capitalise on that tradition by drawing in some new people who may

never have been involved to work alongside our present volunteers.

So, here’s the plan. On each Sunday in September at the 9.45am, 11.00 am and 12.15pm Masses

there will be a short presentation on one of the four areas for development that we have

prioritised. The purpose of this is to invite those interested to the Parish Centre immediately after the Mass for more information and to register as a prospective volunteer.

On Sunday Sept 8th we will be focusing on the Liturgy. How do we improve on the quality of our worship at St. Mary’s? How do we make the experience of Mass here as prayerful and uplifting

Continued from front page……

Sunday 29th Sept will focus on the formation

of a new Parish Pastoral Council. The present

Council have completed their term of office and we need to put in place a new council

that will work alongside the parish clergy and

Pastoral Worker to facilitate ongoing development in the parish. In the centre after

the Mass the commitment involved will be

spelled out.

What is clear is that without people to come

forward we are back to hot air ballooning

territory with a whole lot of ideas and nobody to carry them forward. So we do depend on

you to step forward. We look forward to

seeing you in the parish centre on one of those Sundays.

Lucan Drama Notes: A Tribute to Sheila Sheila Corrigan passed suddenly from this world

on August 13th last and this world- momentarily

stood still and bowed, with flamboyant reverence,

to an amazing and inspiring lady. She embraced

life with passion and lightness pouring her heart

into music, singing, travel and of course drama.

All the world was indeed her stage and oh how

she loved life and people and their lives. She

tripped lightly along, once encountered never

forgotten, indelible in style, presence, heart and

spirit.

Like Mary Poppins she has ascended the rooftops,

winked at the spire of the majestic Spa Hotel,

donned a rainbow of jewelled colours - pinks,

yellows and blues. The curtain has descended

after 40 years of acting finesse, in roles as varied

and vivid as her fashion style. Sheila was a

powerful, passionate actress who never missed a

line , a highly esteemed, life-long member of

Lucan Dramatic Society, warmly valued, but most

of all dearly loved.

To her beloved daughter Denise, her cherished grandchildren Jane and Colm, her son-in law

Tony and all her dear family and friends we offer

sincere and heartfelt sympathy. To Sheila herself

we offer a final resounding applause and a

prolonged standing ovation as she exits to those

heavenly Oscars.

May Celebrates Special Birthday

May Clifford (above with Fr Denis Carroll), is

the Sacristan at St. Patrick’s Church in Esker. She

started in the Pre-fab Church with Christy

Rodgers, and also worked with her mother Mary

Kearns in St. Mary’s Parish, so in total she has

worked between both parishes for over 49 years.

Last week May celebrated her 80th birthday;

friends and parishioners came together to surprise

her with a cake, it was a lovely occasion, also

present was Fr. Denis and Fr Joseph.

May is held in high esteem by all who know her,

her friendly happy personality make it a pleasure

to meet and chat with her.

We wish May many more years of good health

and happiness and thank her for all the excellent

A number of people from Lucan are Course

participants at present and we have also had a

number of past participants from the parish. It is

a great opportunity for people to learn more about

their faith in a gentle environment with great

lecturers, small group sharing and no examination

pressure.

The Pathways Programme is geared towards

those who wish to explore issues and questions

of: faith; ministry; the Church today and the

nature of belief, in an environment appropriate to Adult Learning and Adult Faith Development.

This course is suitable for men and women of all

ages and from all walks of life who are looking

for an opportunity to consider questions about

belief and Church today. The main entry

requirements are: a desire to explore faith;

openness to participation; a willingness to listen

and an interest in new ideas and approaches to

ministry. No academic qualifications and no

previous study in theology or spirituality are

necessary. There is no required written work and there are no exams.

The programme runs over two years from late

September to late May each year. It takes place on

Thursday evenings from 7.00p.m. – 9.30p.m. in

Clonliffe College, Clonliffe Road. The programme this year will be starting on

Thursday 27th September.

The course values the life experience which the

participants bring and, accordingly, group sharing is an integral part of the learning process each

year. The course also offers the spiritual and

theological formation which will enable

participants to explore their faith with greater

confidence. It also helps assist people to prepare

themselves to respond to the needs of the Church

and community and to work in partnerships and

parish teams. Participants have an opportunity to

take part in various liturgies and times of Directed

Prayer during the year.

Fees are €400 each year. Fees may be paid in a

full at the beginning of the year or in instalments

throughout the year. Part-sponsorship may be

available from some parishes.

In the first year the emphasis is on the personal

experiences and the faith journeys of the

participants. Subjects include: How Adult

Learn; Stages of Faith; Images of God;

Introduction to Scripture; Celebrating the Church’s Year; The Person of Christ; Personal

Journey; Sacraments; The Moral Life; Spirituality

and Prayer. The focus of the second year is on

Christian living, the Gospel call and how we

respond to it.

Subjects include: Visions and Models of Church;

Approaches to Ministry; Bereavement and Loss;

Family; Pastoral Issues Today; Justice and Peace,

Ecumenism; Ecology; Caring for Yourself.

Birthday Remembrances

FARRELLY (MICHAEL)

2nd Birthday Away from Home Late of Sarsfield Park and Leixlip. I think of things you used to say

And all that you would do

At some point every single day

My thoughts will turn to you

To lose you was a bitter wrench

The pain cut to my core

I cried until my tears ran out

And then I cried some more

This wouldn’t be your wish for me

That I’d be forever sad

So I try to remind myself Of the happy times we had

I know I can’t be with you now

And you can’t be with me

But safe within my heart you’ll stay

That’s where you’ll always be

Sleep in peace my darling until we meet again

Love you forever.

Your heartbroken wife Beryl

FARRELLY (MICHAEL)

2nd Birthday Away from Home We can’t tell you Grandad

How many tears we’ve cried

Since the day we were told

Our precious Grandad had died It seems so impossible

Although we know it’s true

As everything we see around

Reminds us of you

We can still hear your laughter

And see your smiling face

We would have lost our sanity

If not for God’s saving grace

We have to close this letter now

But this is not goodbye

For you will forever be with us Grandad

We love and miss you so much Fly high with Jonathan and the angels Grandad.

Your heartbroken grandchildren and great

grandchildren. R.I.P.

FARRELLY (MICHAEL)

2nd Birthday Away from Home We wish we could see you one more time

Come walking through the door

But we know that is impossible

We will hear your voice no more We know you can feel our tears

And you don’t want us to cry

Yet our hearts are broken

Because we can’t understand why

Someone so precious had to die

We pray that God will give us strength

And somehow get us through

As we struggle with this heartache

That came when we lost you.

Rest in peace Dad. Loved too much to be

forgotten.

The Seagull and Pigeon families of Lucan July 28th issue of the newsletter mentioned

seagulls nesting on roofs in Hillcrest. In the last

month, 4 seagull fledglings left their nest on my

roof. At first, they had some falls from the roof,

might kill us, but not them. When a fledgling

falls, its mother calls and makes a racket, other

gulls come to her aid and increase the racket,

swooping in protective circles around the newly

hatched. I brave the swooping and take it back up

and put it out the attic window. I expect mother

gull to fuss and comfort it but no, she is wiser

than many humans. She moves away from it. She is not encouraging that kind of thing. Thankfully

she calls the swoopers off. Excellent

communication all round without a single mobile

phone.

I do not gladly return them to the nest. When I

came to live in Hillcrest over 40 years ago, the

evening sky would fill with murmurs of starlings

weaving amazing patterns. October skies filled

with Vs of geese returning from Greenland. Bluetits, thrushes, blacktops, wrens, siskins, and

others, whose names I never knew, visited and

nested in my garden. Still some dunnocks, finches

and warblers at the feeders and of course there is

a robin. Their numbers are way down because the

big birds -- sea/herring gull, pigeons /collared

doves, crows/rooks and magpies -- are taking

over. But especially the gulls and pigeons. The

morning sounds like a fishing village, which

would be nice if it were one. Evening bundles of

monotonous (five-note by four times) pigeon calls drown out the small bird's song.

This is not good news. These are city gulls who

do not know the sea. They left that country many

gull generations ago. Our throwaway habits and

lack of predators have made city life easier. They

are intelligent and aggressive, and their numbers

are increasing. Soon, if not already, they will be a

talked-about nuisance. Also, the pigeons unless a

hunger drives us to live off them. Our small birds

will become fewer and fewer in numbers and in

kind. The loss will be ours. Times are changing and this time it's not technology that is causing

the change.

I suggest less weed-killers, pesticides, herbicides,

and chemical fertilisers. Allow the ladybirds, and bumblebees and other insects to live. Less perfect

gardens could be a good thing.

So why do I put the fledgling seagulls back on the

roof?

Summer Blooms: Well it's been an active summer for Tidy Towns,

tending to our precious blooms and generally

keeping the village looking well. While we didn't

have to contend with the drought of last summer,

watering of plants took up quite a bit of our time

and energy. This year you may have noticed a change in colour and design since we put our

focus on biodiversity friendly plants. The sense of

pride and achievement when our summer blooms

appeared and continue to be recognised and

appreciated by so many people has been very

rewarding.

Alas, however, imagine our disheartenment when

we discovered that quite a number of our shrubs

along the 'strip' down along the Lucan road were

discreetly removed by person or persons unknown

who clearly knew what they were about. Apart from the obvious cost involved, specific tidy

towners had dedicated themselves to creating and

nurturing this particular bedding area, giving it

many hours of their time.

Nothing more to be said about this other than we

invite you, the people of Lucan, to keep a

watchful eye on our plants in the village and

surrounds so we can all continue to enjoy them.

Big thanks due to the following:

Then on the Friday afternoon, the aforementioned

There she goes……..

It was with great sadness that we learnt of the passing of our favourite thespian, Sheila Corrigan.

For many years, dating back to the early 1980s to recent

times, Sheila was P.R.O. for Lucan Drama, and built up a

great relationship with Lucan Newsletter – her reports were

always in on time, and that was way before emails!

We enjoyed the privilege of watching her portrayals of many

characters down the years, and marvelled that she knew every

line in every play she was involved in – meaning she knew

everybody’s part, and could quickly dig someone out of a

hole in the heat of the moment.

While Sheila was a serious actor, she brought the house down

in the many pantomimes produced by Lucan Drama, the Spice

Mommas (1998) coming to mind!

No doubt, many will have their own

special memories of Sheila whether

it be drama or singing, or just

meeting her on the street – she lit up

so many lives.

We extend our deepest sympathies to her daughter Denise and family, and

also to her many friends who gave

her the send-off she would have been

proud of – a show stopper!

We’ll not see her likes again.

May she rest in peace.

A good win for the Senior footballer’s vs Ballinteer last weekend, Inter footballers lost out

to a strong St Jude’s side and also Skerries in the

last two weeks, Jnr As had a good win vs

Peregrines but will need to beat St Jude’s in their

last game to be sure of not being in possible

relegation play off. Jnr Bs unfortunately suffered

a heavy defeat vs a very strong Oalfs side.

Date to Remember

Saturday 24th August - Our President’s Day

Dave Hayden R.I.P.

Dave Hayden has unmistakably been

acknowledged for many years as one of the

greatest Pitch and Putt players of all time. Sadly

but peacefully Dave left this world on Wednesday 31st July last. His membership of

Lucan for some twenty years will be

remembered with fondness. His friendship was

warm and ever helpful - never exuding the

greatness and the many achievements of his

wonderful career in Pitch and Putt. Davy

excelled in his course maintenance at Lucan. His

application to the work was never found wanting

and he was always concerned that the course was

in A1 condition for the members. To his wife

Bernie, his son Dave and family may we extend

our deepest sympathies.

Transport Users Now that the Post Office at Dodsboro has been moved to SuperValu, the most accessible Post

Office for those living in Dodsboro and

surrounding areas is in Centra Lucan Village.

The 25 bus is now more important than ever for

these people to access this Post Office. In order

to make it more accessible a new bus stop is

needed outside the AIB bank. The two existing

stops at the Bally Ally and further down in the

village are too far away and are very

inconvenient for our senior citizens. This

proposed stop would benefit all other users who want to access the village.
