SELECTMEN’S REPORT
Another year has rolled around, and although we have gone over the budget in some departments, figures show that the town is better off financially than it was at the close of the year 1940. So let’s all keep pulling together and keep costs down and at the end of 1942 we will be again on the gaining side of the ledger.
As you will notice, the town department has been reduced to $3,000.00 and we recommend paying $1,000.00 on that this year.
Since the budget was posted the county tax has been dropped over $400.00.
But we must remember that war is with us and our obligations are going to be great, if money can keep the enemy away from our shores let’s all put our shoulder to the wheel and buy defense stamps and bonds and spend every cent we can spare for these bonds and stamps.
Pay our taxes to the Tax Collector as soon as we possibly can after receiving the bill, this not only helps her but you can get a discount which can be used for the purchase of these bonds.
Our largest tax payer in the town pays his within the time allotted for discount and saves around $100.00 a year.
Also don’t forget to drive a car the state law says your previous year’s Poll Tax has to be paid to the Tax Collector. We thank all department heads and townspeople who
have cooperated. in making this past year one of suc- cess in our opinion.
Don’t forget to buy defense stamps and bonds and help your defense committee every way you possibly can, do not take this war lightly as it is a very serious matter, and needs the help of every one of the 130,000,000 people in the United States.
BOARD OF SELECTMEN.

REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS
To the School Board and Citizens of the Town of Pelham:
There were three changes in the teaching staff this year. At Gage Hill Mary Shaughnessey filled the vacancy caused by the resignation of Gertrude Cou- sins. At North Pelham Helen Zolkos filled the vacancy caused by the resignation of Sophie Raucykevich and at the Junior High School Alice Morrill filled the vacancy caused by the resignation of Doris Delaware.
In September, 1941, Superintendent Fred W. Hail was called to service in the United States Army. My duties as acting Superintendent of Schools began on October 1st. The work for the year had been very well organized and planned. I have, with practically no changes, carried on these plans.
The North Pelham P. T. A. which is now a part of the Pelham P. T. A. has had the North Pelham School wired and equipped for electric lights. This fine community service is greatly appreciated by the teacher, children and all who use the building.
Because of the long dry season, the Junior High water system installed last year has been out of com- mission since last October 2nd, more than four months. Up to the present time, the well has failed to fill sufficiently to make its use practicable. We plan to try the system again this week. If the supply of water proves inadequate some action will be necessary to insure the school a reasonable supply of water for the future.
May I take this opportunity to express my appre- ciation to the School Board, teachers, and all who have helped to make the work very pleasant and successful.

On account of the President’s appeal on behalf of the war effort, school activties this year will center on activities within the school, which will aid this effort. At this writing, plans are underway whereby pupils may form clubs for the purpose of giving ma- terial aid such as sewing, knitting, handicraft, or any other type of help that may be necessary. Warden service within the school, preparing for pos-
sible air raids and emergencies, and activities of this nature are to be stressed. Drills and instruction are being held to prepare for any eventuality either within or outside of the school building.
Hot soup is again being served this year under the sponsorship of the local unit of the P. T. A. and is much appreciated in the cold weather. We are also grateful for a contribution toward our Christmas party by this organization.
oF
Our attendance record, which in the past has been so good, has been cut into this year by an unusual amount of sickness. We shall appreciate the coopera- tion of parents in this matter of seeing that all pupils maintain regular attendance unless confined to their homes with actual sickness.
The teachers wish to thank the superintendent, school nurse, and all those who have aided us in our school effort this year.
Respectfully submitted,
ROBERT W. GOOGINS, Headmaster.

REPORT OF SCHOOL NURSE
Pelham, New Hampshire February 3, 1942
To the Superintendent of Schools, the School Board and the Citizens of Pelham:
I present my report as school nurse from February 1, 1941 to Februray 1, 1942.
Number of pupils examined (3 examinations) 513 . Number of pupils having defective vision .... 3 Number of pupils having defective tonsils .... 35 Number of pupils having chicken pox ........ 3 Number of pupils having mumps ........... 11 Number of pupils having whooping cough .... 4 Number of pupils having impetigo ........ nd 10 Number of pupils having ringworm ......... 1 Number of pupils attending dental clinic .... 30 Number of- home Visits’. .074. fcc ee ee 154 Number: of: schoolavisits ss... ari setae ee 236
The P. T. A. sponsored the Dental Clinic last May and June and thirty children had their dental work done, each paying. a small charge. The transportation to Dr. Welch’s office in Nashua, N. H., was provided for by several of our Pelham women.
The P. T. A. has also sponsored the soup project during the coldest months of the winter, the children paying .02 for a generous serving, and those who can- not afford to pay are given some free of charge.
Most of the cases of chicken pox have been at the Gage Hill School, with a few cases in North Pelham. All of the cases of mumps have been at the Center. We have had no cases of measles this year. There hav been quite a few cases of sore throat and also severe colds and these have been scattered over the whole town.
Respectfully submitted,
ANNA M. HORSKIN, R. N. School Nurse.
