Dear friends,

“Do nothing out of selfishness or out of vainglory; rather, humbly regard others as more important than yourselves, each looking out not for his own interest, but [also] everyone for those of others.” Philippians 2:3-4

For 75 years, Catholic Charities New Hampshire has been caring for others, guiding them with dignity and respect. We are experiencing unprecedented and uncertain times and the work of CCNH is needed more than ever before. It is through your compassion and faith that His work continues to be done throughout all of New Hampshire. I am grateful for all

you do in the name of our Lord and in charity to His people.

In the pages of this year’s report, you’ll find glimpses of the past and present – a reflection of the transformation that has taken place in caring for those in need. May God continue to bless the work you make possible, and may God bless all who look out for the interest of others.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Peter A. Libasci Bishop of Manchester

Dear friends,

A friend recently told me that life happens “for” you not “to” you. This may be a simple concept for some but it was a watershed moment for me. Sometimes it’s easier and more comfortable remaining in a victim or blaming mode when feeling like everything is happening “to” you. Growing up with the feeling that many things happened “to” me always left me feeling like I was not enough. For me, the paradigm shift of moving from life happening “to” me to “for” me has changed my whole perspective and outlook on things.

In light of the continued pandemic, our precarious future, and so much political and racial tension, both locally and nationally (in which we continue to pray for healing), it can be easy to feel like life is happening “to” us, which can leave us anxious or in despair. But when we flip the coin and look at it from another perspective, as if life is happening ”for” us, instead of getting angry, bitter or playing the blame game, we move to a mode of learning, curiosity, and growth.

Page 3: 2020 Annual Report - Catholic Charities New Hampshire

In addition to this new mindset, I’ve moved to change my focus to one of greater gratitude. In a time of so much uncertainty, paying closer attention to all I take for granted and appreciating all I have in front of me certainly helps to balance out the days when I feel anxiety creeping in.

When you think about it, there truly is so much of God‘s abundance around us when we take the time to look. Seek that; revel in that; rest in that.

The last five months have been trying for all of us, each in our own way. And many of our staff have gone above and beyond in their dedication and commitment to serve those most in need: our seniors, the poor, the frightened and the marginalized. I deeply, deeply appreciate their self-sacrifice and your contributions to help edify, stabilize, nurture and heal those in need. There are many heroes among us, certainly those serving on the front lines in our nursing homes, at the Food Bank, in our social service programs, in those providing back office support (accounting, IT, and HR), and in communications and fundraising.

Earlier this year, we were notified that Catholic Charities New Hampshire was recognized by Business NH Magazine with the “Nonprofit of the Decade” Award. What an honor - and testament to our phenomenal Board, volunteers and our many benefactors who continue to believe in us and the tremendous value and impact of our work! Honestly, this award was only possible because of YOU. Thank you!! I’m SO grateful for EACH of you — for your heart, your service and your contribution(s).

When life happens “for” us, we benefit and grow from the fruits of our labor. We had an exciting decade from 2010 to 2019 – not only a decade of many successes but one of change, of adaptation, of learning from our mistakes and, most importantly, of growth. To highlight a few: the Food Bank moved into a new building, 4x larger than their previous one (end of 2009); we acquired (and later sold) a home care agency and started a new staffing agency; we acquired Warde Rehabilitation and Health Center (Windham) and sold Good Shepherd Rehabilitation and Health Center (Jaffrey); St. Charles transitioned from a children’s home to a special needs children’s school; we expanded Our Place to Nashua (and temporarily Rochester); we overhauled our social services support to focus more on case management and “Life Plan” development; and finally, we acquired The CareGivers, Monadnock at Home and Liberty House. I’d say it was a very busy decade. God has been good to us, indeed!

And if life (and God) is “for” us, who can be against?

Peace and God Bless,

Thomas Blonski President & CEO

Nurturing Children & Strengthening Families

Catholic Charities NH’s early focus, aligned with key social needs of the 1940s, was with services for the young and elderly. As part of that, we coordinated and assumed the financial management of six orphanages managed by religious communities in New Hampshire. In assessing the needs of children, our emphasis shifted towards placing children in loving and secure families, rather than institutional settings.

Our work with NH’s orphanages paved the way for our Adoption Services program, which remains in operation today and has assisted in the placement of more than 2,000 children in loving homes.

The Our Place program was established in 1982 in Manchester through a collaboration with Catholic Medical Center. The program initially offered support for pregnant and parenting teens to help reduce child abuse and neglect. Our Place expanded to also serve families in the Greater Nashua area. Today, the program

remains strong, with a more comprehensive focus on pregnancy and parenting education and equipping families with the skills to build nurturing and safe home environments while reducing childhood stressors and preventing abuse.

In 2018, the St. Charles Children’s Home became St. Charles School, a full-time licensed special education school for students, grades K-8, who display severe emotional disturbances and other forms of behavioral impairments.

St. Charles Children’s Home was acquired by Catholic Charities NH in 1968 and transitioned from the last of the orphanages to group home care. For more than 100 years, St. Charles operated as a residential home for children, until becoming a short-term therapeutic education service provider for students with behavioral, emotional and social challenges in 2012.

Feeding the Hungry

The New Hampshire Food Bank opened its doors in 1984 as a program of Catholic Charities NH and remains the only food warehouse distribution center in the state. In its first year, it distributed 250,000 pounds of food out of a 6,000-square-foot warehouse.

Today, it delivers more than 14 million pounds of food annually from a state-of-the-art, 60,000-square-foot warehouse. The NHFB is now able to collect and store a much greater volume of food, while at the same time, deliver food and products to more than 400 partner agencies statewide. Since moving into the new building, food distribution has increased by 131% over the last decade.

In 2008, The New Hampshire Food Bank launched the Recipe for Success Culinary Job Training Program to help individuals suffering financial hardship gain the skills and experience necessary to seek employment in the food service industry. In 12 years, 545 individuals have graduated from the program, many who went on to successful careers.

Caring for our Seniors

Catholic Charities NH opened its first two nursing facilities, St. Teresa’s Manor in Manchester and St. Francis Home in Laconia, in 1948. Two more homes, St. Ann in Dover and St. Vincent de Paul in Berlin, followed in 1958 and 1963, respectively. This set the foundation for our extensive history of providing compassionate and caring healthcare services for thousands of seniors over the past 75 years.

Mt. Carmel Rehabilitation and Nursing Center opened in Manchester in 1969. Today, Mt. Carmel remains our largest nursing facility, with 120 resident beds.

Catholic Charities NH purchased Warde Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Windham, a 32-bed skilled nursing and 39-bed assisted living facility in 2015.

In 2019, Warde expanded with the addition of a modern two-story, 21-unit independent living wing – Searles Place at Warde – and a new 10-bed assisted living wing.

10 • Catholic Charities New Hampshire

Page 11: 2020 Annual Report - Catholic Charities New Hampshire

Today, we operate seven skilled nursing facilities statewide, as well as four independent living communities and an assisted living community, serving more than 1,000 seniors annually.

Catholic Charities NH received a grant in 1984 from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to create Caregivers, an ecumenical coalition of Manchester-area churches, synagogues and agencies providing volunteer services for the frail, elderly and handicapped. Since then, Caregivers organizations in Derry, Nashua, Manchester, Littleton and Salem were born.

The CareGivers of Greater Manchester and Greater Nashua rejoined the Catholic Charities NH family as an official program in 2018, and today provides homebound and disabled seniors with groceries, rides to medical appointments and various forms of emotional support.

Further building on our wide range of localized services and support for seniors and elderly across the state, Catholic Charites NH acquired Monadnock at Home in 2019. The nonprofit membership organization provides seniors across the Monadnock Region with services enabling them to remain independent and living at home.

Moving Lives Forward

In 1979, Catholic Charities NH began helping refugees in the wake of the Vietnam War, providing assistance with sponsorship and initial resettlement. In 1992, Catholic Charities NH officially opened the office of Immigration & Refugee Services, with a focus on providing legal case management. Within two years, the office was accredited by the U.S. Bureau of Immigration Services.

Today, the program – now called Immigration Legal Services – and its team of immigration attorneys and BIA-accredited representatives provide high-quality legal consultation and representation for a variety of immigration needs such as naturalization, asylum, family reunification and protection for immigrant victims of crime.

In 2018, Catholic Charities NH found another way to better support an underserved and vulnerable population with the acquisition of Liberty House, which has more than 15 years of experience providing sober transitional housing, recovery services and wellness programs for homeless and struggling veterans.

Now a program of Catholic Charities NH, Liberty House is poised to nearly triple the capacity of its sober transitional living program and make critical services available for more veteran populations, including retired and mobility-challenged veterans.

Adapting to Changing Social Needs

In 2015, Catholic Charities NH deepened its focus on driving sustainable change for New Hampshire residents facing poverty and despair with the design and implementation of an innovative ‘Life Plan’ tool. Developed through our years of experience working with individuals and families in need, the Life Plan is a customized assessment and series of goals we collaboratively develop with clients to address and remove current crises, while shifting the fundamental dynamics of their lives to generate more positive, long-term successes.

The first Morehouse Program was established in 1980, cultivating various internship opportunities for college students. Students spent summers researching and brainstorming for solutions around key social challenges across New Hampshire, such as hunger, homelessness, child abuse and teen suicide. Students provided formal recommendations for service providers, legislators and community groups.

Three new initiatives were developed through the Parish Social Ministry program in 1990. Hispanic Outreach provided casework assistance to individuals and families and community education to the Hispanic population. Rainbows for All God’s Children trained educators and other caring adults within a school, community or parish setting to facilitate support groups for children who experienced the loss of one or both parents through death or divorce. Unemployment support groups and Joblink helped individuals find support and jobs during times of increasing unemployment rates.

Two New Programs Join Catholic Charities NH Family

There were two new additions to Catholic Charities NH’s social services programs this past year, deepening our commitment to supporting underserved and vulnerable populations statewide.

In November 2019, Catholic Charities NH acquired Liberty House, which has responded to the dynamic needs of homeless and at-risk veterans for more than 15 years through sober transitional housing, recovery and job placement services, and various forms of other assistance including food, clothing and community referrals.

With the support of Catholic Charities NH, Liberty House is poised for its next phase of growth. The program recently moved into a 16,000-square-foot building in Manchester, nearly tripling the capacity of its transitional living program, opening its doors to more veteran populations and gaining the ability to offer expanded support services.

In February 2020, we acquired Monadnock at Home. The nonprofit membership organization provides seniors across the Monadnock Region with a wide range of social, wellness and education programs, enabling them to remain independent, avoid isolation and retain valuable connections to their communities. Services include volunteer-driven transportation to the grocery store and medical appointments, as well as home check-in calls, social outings, companion visits and access to an extensive network of pre-vetted independent service providers for assistance with everyday needs.

Now as a program of Catholic Charities NH, Monadnock at Home is planning to serve even more seniors through expanded case management services and an expansion of services beyond the ten communities it currently serves.

Skilled Nursing Facilities Honored for Quality Excellence

It was another banner year of quality excellence for Catholic Charities NH’s Healthcare Services division.

All seven of our skilled nursing facilities were honored by the American Health Care Association/National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL) for enhancing the lives of their residents through exceptional care, as part of its Quality Initiative Recognition Program. They are Mt. Carmel Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Manchester, St. Teresa Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Manchester, St. Joseph Residence in Manchester, St. Ann Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Dover, St. Francis Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Laconia, St. Vincent de Paul Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Berlin and Warde Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Windham. Memorable Ice Ball Gala Celebrates 75 Years

Catholic Charities NH’s 75th year kicked off in style on February 15, as more than 500 supporters, sponsors and staff came together for the Ice Ball, the organization’s signature anniversary celebration of its Powerful Past and Promising Future.

The evening featured a special cocktail reception, delicious dinner, plenty of dancing and entertainment, and even a special after-party that kept the night going. While fun was had by all, the most important part was raising more than $307,000 to benefit New Hampshire individuals and families in need. All proceeds went to our emergency assistance fund.

The Ice Ball was made possible through generous sponsorships, including the presenting sponsor, CGI Business Solutions.

Catholic Charities NH Establishes Crisis Fund

Little did we know that our 75th anniversary of creating hope, healing and stability for individuals and communities across New Hampshire would begin with the COVID-19 pandemic. As the world changed for all of us, the burdens became heavier for those already struggling to get by.

That’s why Catholic Charities NH swiftly set up the Catholic Charities NH Crisis Fund to provide direct assistance to the state’s most vulnerable residents – including families faced with extreme hardship and uncertainty, individuals challenged by mental health burdens and homebound seniors unsure where next week’s food supply will come from. As of September 21, 2020, we raised $380,332. Thank you for your support!

Report To Our Community 2019

FEEDING THE PROGRAMS THAT FEED THE HUNGRY.

In a Time of Crisis ... We Thank You!While we reflect back on efforts made to combat hunger in 2019, we can’t help but recognize all that has changed since then. In a blink of an eye, the Coronavirus pandemic swept the globe leaving so many unprepared and fearful of what was to come. Like so many, the NH Food Bank could not have predicted how greatly the Coronavirus would impact our work. By mid-April, volunteer opportunities were suspended, extra sanitization measures were put into place and our staff stood masked and ready to face these new challenges.

With so many Granite Staters left unemployed and schools closed, it was not long before we began to see a drastic increase in the demand for food. Unfortunately, grocery stores were also seeing a demand which resulted in a decrease in donations to the Food Bank. In order for us to continue to meet the need, that meant increasing our purchasing more than 300%. Despite the financial strain on our organization, our mission remained and our determination followed.

Thankfully backup arrived. We received a team of dedicated New Hampshire National Guard members who were ready to assist us in any way they could. We began doubling meal production in our culinary job training kitchen, establishing drive-thru mobile food pantries across the state and working with our partner agencies to learn what areas were seeing the greatest need.

Today, nearly 1 in 7 men, women and children are food insecure in New Hampshire based on Map the Meal Gap and projections from research conducted by Feeding America. That is approximately 71,000 additional people who do not know where their next meal is coming from and between 21-23% are children. Our distribution efforts have grown more than 400% during this time. We continue to reevaluate our strategies and resources to ensure we continue to meet the need.

Despite how difficult this time has been for so many, one positive outcome has been the unwavering amount of support from our community. Whether it has been through donations, virtual food drives, WMUR-TV’s “Project Community: Together from Home” featuring NH natives like Adam Sandler and Seth Meyers or just thoughtful messages to our staff, the encouragement has given us motivation, gratitude and hope that there is a light at the end of this tunnel. Before we knew it, we were learning how to navigate uncharted waters and that is because of the generous support of so many. From all of us at the New Hampshire Food Bank, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
