All of us at the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network understand the many

challenges facing those affected by pancreatic cancer, as well as the

impact this disease has on family members and caregivers. But we also

know there is reason to be hopeful.

Our comprehensive approach to fighting pancreatic cancer is unique

and effective. We raise money for direct private funding of research and

advocate for more aggressive federal research funding. We make sure the

latest research and treatment options reach pancreatic cancer patients

through our no-cost Patient and Liaison Services (PALS) program and we

support a robust, all-volunteer network focused on community outreach

programs. This comprehensive approach placed a national spotlight on

our organization over the last year that brought more interest, new energy

and focused determination toward making scientific progress.

This annual report reviews our accomplishments in Fiscal Year 2007-2008.

We hope you feel a strong sense of hope and optimism for the future. This

sense of hope would not be possible without your unmatched passion and

enthusiasm for this cause.

Thank you. We sincerely appreciate everything that you do for the

pancreatic cancer community.

Sincerely,

Jason Kuhn Julie Fleshman, JD, MBA Chairman of the Board President & CEO

aBout the pancreatic cancer action networkThe Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, Inc. was founded in 1999 to

focus national attention on a disease that is the fourth leading cause

of cancer death in the United States but receives far less consideration

than cancers of comparable severity. Initially created as a grassroots

organization, the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network has become the

national leader in the quest to defeat pancreatic cancer. The Pancreatic

Cancer Action Network fulfills its mission through a comprehensive

strategy that combines directly funding research, generating public

policy, providing patient services, and extending community outreach

and education nationwide. The organization stands as a beacon of hope

for the pancreatic cancer community by providing leadership and unity

in the urgent fight to find a cure.

with the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) through a rigorous peer-review

system to ensure selection of the highest-quality science.

THE SCIENTIFIC SUMMIT ON PANCREATIC CANCERThe Scientific Summit was convened to answer important questions about pancreatic

cancer science, identify gaps in understanding and promising approaches to studying the

disease, and propose collaborations amongst scientists at different institutions to produce

discoveries that have the greatest potential to benefit patients. Discussion topics included:

cancer stem cells, mechanism-based therapeutics, novel therapeutics, early detection,

molecular profiling of tumors, and familial pancreatic cancer. The white paper generated by

the summit provided summaries of the major themes, and informed the community about

the challenges and opportunities in the research field.

THE NATIONAL PLAN TO ADVANCE PANCREATIC CANCER RESEARCHFurther analysis of the research challenges and opportunities led our esteemed Scientific

Advisory Board to develop The National Plan to Advance Pancreatic Cancer Research, a

multi-level action plan that represents their professional judgment of what is necessary

to mount a strong, sustainable program to make progress in pancreatic cancer. We

are asking for an unprecedented$170million in federal funding to carry outThe Plan.

Additionally,wewillraise$25millioninprivatefundingoverthenextthreeyearstosupport

pancreatic cancer research. The merging of these funds will support RAISE THE CURE,

a comprehensive strategy and action plan to put pancreatic cancer research on the fast

track to finding a cure.

“we brought together the best scientific minds from around the globe for an unprecedented meeting to develop a comprehensive, strategic direction for our future scientific efforts. one of the many exciting results of the meeting can be seen in the national plan to advance pancreatic cancer research.” - Jason Kuhn, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Pancreatic Cancer Action Network

government aFFairs & advocacy Our Government Affairs & Advocacy program, based in Washington, DC, is focused on

educating elected officials about pancreatic cancer and the need to increase the amount

of research funding dedicated to this disease.

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS HIGHLIGHTS IN 2007-2008:

• Since the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network’s advocacy program was founded in

1999, we have made increasing federal funding for pancreatic cancer research our top

priority. Our efforts have contributed to a cumulative 324% increase in the National Cancer

Institute’s(NCI)pancreaticcancerresearchbudgetduringthelastnineyears.

• With the help of our highly esteemed Scientific Advisory Board and Randy Pausch,

(Left) Pancreatic Cancer Action Network advocates gather on the steps of Capitol Hill for the second annual Advocacy Day, held on March 11, 2007, in Washington, DC.(Right) Representative Todd Platts (R-PA) meets with Jutta Stallman, Advocacy Coordinator from York, PA, on Advocacy Day 2007.

“people in research labs can do miraculous things if they are given the resources to do it. every day matters right now.” - Excerpt from a public service announcement filmed with Randy Pausch for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network in November 2007

PhD, we embarked upon a new path and

developed an action plan and the first-

ever substantive legislation focused on

increasing pancreatic cancer research

funding. Dr. Pausch helped us launch The

National Plan to Advance Pancreatic Cancer

Research in January 2008 and then returned

to Congress to testify on our behalf in front

of the U.S. House of Representatives’

Appropriations Committee in March 2008.

• InMarch 2008, we hosted our second

annual Pancreatic Cancer Advocacy Day

in Washington, DC. Approximately 900

people participated, either in person or

through our National Call-In, enabling us

to reach nearly 400 members of Congress.

As a result of our Advocacy Day and

other efforts, the House and Senate

Appropriations Committees sent strong

directions to the NCI to make pancreatic

cancer research a higher priority.

• This year, we also reached out to our

advocacy colleagues at other organizations

focused on the most lethal cancers.

Following pancreatic cancer, the most

lethal cancers are ovarian, myeloma, brain,

stomach, esophageal, lung, and liver. A

coalition was formed to advocate that

Congress create a new research program

at the NCI to specifically focus on the most

lethal cancers.

• This year, 4,741 advocates sent

23,729 email messages to 534 members

of Congress. This represented a 101%

increase in the amount of advocates

and a 106% increase in the number of

Congressional contacts made compared

to the previous fiscal year.

Randy Pausch, PhD, testifies before Congress on March 13, 2008, on behalf of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network about the need to increase research funding for the disease.
