Christopher Middleton on a children’s novel not to be ignored

First invent your villain. That’s the golden rule of all story-telling, as suggested by unconventional Andy Stanton, author of Mr Gum and the Power Crystals, the fourth book in a series which begins with You’re A Bad Man, Mr Gum! “I thought that if I took as my starting point a truly horrible person, then the stories would flow,” declares Stanton. “And they did!”

He hasn’t shied away from horribleness, either. As well as having ugly bloodshot eyes, Mr Gum has a personality that’s less than winning. “He was a complete horror who hated children and fun,” writes Stanton. “What he liked was snoozing in bed all day long, being lonely and scowling at things.”

Together with his henchman Billy William the Third (England’s Most Horrible Butcher), Mr Gum spends most of his time thinking up foul and anti-social schemes; in this book, for example, he sets out to reactivate a 450-year-old curse that will bring fire and destruction to his home town of Lamonic Bibber.

All he needs to achieve his dark ends is a pair of magical stones (also known as power crystals). And the only person standing in his way is a brave little nine-year-old girl called Polly.

“I think Polly is probably the only character in my books who isn’t completely stupid,” says Stanton proudly, and a look down his cast list pretty much confirms this point of view. That said, Polly’s friends and neighbours do combine kindness with daftness, especially the eccentric Friday O’Leary and Old Granny, whose special talent is to shake her head and say: “The past has a way of repeating itself” again and again.

Stanton’s writing method is to throw parts of a conventional novel up in the air and then see where they come down. And it’s this extra element of norm-bending that makes the book enjoyable for all ages, although from the outside you would think it was aimed at under-eights.

THE PIANO TUNER

A little bit of patience and a lot of skill is the key to perfect tuning

Has it ever occurred to you that when you hear a piano played at a concert or on a recording,

you hear the tuner’s work as much as that of the pianist? Usually we are only remembered if

something goes wrong, and then there are no bouquets or subsequent royalties on CD sales!

The tuner has to make sure not only that the instrument is in tune but also that it’s

performing correctly. It has to be ‘regulated’ and ‘voiced’ as the artist requires, which is not

always easy to do.

What tuners need most of all is quiet, which at some concert halls can only be

achieved in the middle of the night. You would be amazed at how little understanding there

can be from both amateur and professional venues. At some places it is thought obligatory to

put out the audience chairs while the piano tuner is working!

When you arrive you often find that the rehearsal is overrunning and the conductor

needs ‘just 15 more minutes’, thereby reducing your working time − sometimes you have to

beg them to finish as you see the time quickly ticking away. No sooner have you started work

than inevitably various members of the orchestra return early and sometimes even start

practising while you’re trying to tune! The audience also often enters too early and takes no

account of the poor tuner, to the point where you can barely hear.

Among many members of the public, the image of the piano tuner is not good − an

old man with case and stick. However, today’s tuners are dynamic people who travel

worldwide to offer their skills to top concert halls and pianists.




SUMMARY

Pianists are not the only people responsible for the success of a concert, but the contribution

IRON MAIDENS

Two determined Londoners have set their sights on victory at one of the world’s toughest

sporting challenges, the Ironman

Ironman: even the name suggests something beyond normal human strength. Envisage

muscle-bound superheroes covered in Lycra doing incredible deeds and you wouldn’t be far

wrong. The world-famous triathlon is a gruelling test of endurance attracting 30,000 athletes

each year.

Whatever the scenery, whatever the weather this formidable event is the same: a 3.8-

km swim, a 180-km cycle ride and finally a 42-km marathon, to be completed consecutively

and within a 17-hour limit. Although ridiculously difficult, this test of physical courage has

not disheartened first-time competitors Nicole Mathison and Karen Berry. “Before we started

training, living and working in London meant we spent more nights in the pub than on the

race track,” says Nicole, an information manager. “Now, as well as the physical

improvements, I actually feel more alive; the mental and physical changes are amazing.”

“I know completing is not a matter of luck, it’s all in the preparation,” says Karen. So,

after eighteen months of training, how confident do they feel? “We’ve always believed that

Ironman success is achievable, but for us the main thing is completion, the actual endurance is

the challenge, not the time,” says Nicole.

It’s every man (and every woman) for themselves with this race. “I’ve had to acquire

new skills, like fixing punctures,” says Karen. “If you break down during the cycling section,

there’s no big strong man out there that is going to stop and help you refit your inner tube.”

Ironman is definitely for the fit, but not necessarily the young. Sister Madonna Buder,

an American nun, completed the 2006 course in Hawaii aged 76, finishing with just over one

hour to spare, double the world record of seven hours 50 minutes set in Germany in 1997.

DEATH IN THE VIENNA WOODS

It was a scandal that shook an empire. At 7am on January 30th, 1889, the Archduke Rudolf, heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, was found dead together with his mistress, Baroness Marie Vetsera in the Imperial hunting lodge at Mayerling in the Vienna Woods, fifteen miles southwest of the capital. Was it suicide as (0) ________ or was it murder? The police closed their investigations with surprising haste, and the dossier on the investigations (22) ________ in the state archives as it should normally have been. Members of the Imperial household were sworn to secrecy. Yet, despite these attempts to cover up, almost at once (23) ________ in Vienna of a politically motivated assassination.

FINGERPRINTS Everyone's fingerprints are different, and we leave marks on everything we touch. This makes

OLVASOTT SZÖVEG ÉRTÉSE

Általános útmutató

Csak az utasításban megadott helyre beírt megoldás fogadható el. A rövid választ igénylő, valamint a mondatkiegészítéses feladatoknál a válaszokat

tartalmi szempontok alapján értékeljük, azaz a nyelvtani és a helyesírási hibákat csak akkor vesszük figyelembe, ha azok a válasz érthetőségét akadályozzák. Az esetleges helyesírási és nyelvtani hibák ellenére is pontot kap tehát a vizsgázó, ha válaszából megállapítható, hogy megértette a szöveget. Ha valamelyik kérdésre többféle válasz is elfogadható, a javítási kulcs tartalmazza a szövegből adódó lehetséges válaszokat, illetve azokat a tartalmi elemeket, amelyeket a jó válasznak tartalmaznia kell. Az esetleg zárójelben szereplő szavak és kifejezések nem feltételei a válasz elfogadhatóságának.

Nem kaphat viszont pontot a vizsgázó, ha az utasításban megadott szószámot túllépi, még akkor sem, ha a válasz egyébként helyes. (Az összevont alakok egy szónak számítanak, tehát: it’s been = két szó; it has been = három szó.)

Pontot veszít a vizsgázó akkor is, ha valamelyik kérdésre több választ ír be. Erre akkor sem kaphat pontot, ha a többféle változat között a helyes megoldás is szerepel. A feladatlap 30 itemet tartalmaz. A dolgozatpont megegyezik a vizsgaponttal. Ahány dolgozatpontot szerzett a diák, ugyanannyi a vizsgapontja is.

Az egyes feladatokban az itemeket (kérdéseket), egyenként is minősíteni kell. Javítás közben minden feladatnál, a feladatban szereplő összes kérdéshez egy-egy szürke négyzetbe kérjük, írja be a következő kódokat:

Átszámítási táblázat

HALLOTT SZÖVEG ÉRTÉSE

A feladatokat kizárólag tartalmi szempontok alapján értékeljük, azaz a helyesírási hibákat

csak akkor vesszük figyelembe, ha azok a válasz érthetőségét akadályozzák. Így például elfogadhatjuk a scientific helyett a *sientific megoldást, de nem tekinthetjük egyszerű helyesírási hibának azt az esetet, amikor egy másik értelmes angol szó kerül a megoldásba (mondjuk, eighty helyett *eighteen). A szám/évszám betűvel és számmal írva egyaránt elfogadható. A többesszámú alak hiányát önmagában ne vegyük hibának. A javítókulcsban zárójelben szereplő válaszrészek nem feltétlenül szükségesek a válasz elfogadásáshoz.

Sikeres javítások elfogadhatók, de csak akkor, ha egyértelműen kiderül, hogy mi volt a vizsgázó végleges döntése. Amennyiben több – köztük hibás megoldást is tartalmazó – „érvényes” választ írt be a vizsgázó, a válaszokat akkor sem fogadhatjuk el, ha azok tartalmazzák a helyes megoldást is.

SZÖVEGÁTIRAT

TASK 1 It's lunchtime in Mexico City and a young man follows a slim girl wearing dark glasses into a restaurant. Without looking behind her, she lets the heavy glass door swing closed, almost smashing him in the face.

In a small shop in Seoul, a female customer wants to buy a cheap pen. 56-year-old store owner Jang Kim takes the time to show her different models. When she buys the pen, he takes the time to say a friendly "thank you".

A chill wind is blowing on a late-winter Wednesday morning at a busy subway exit in Toronto. Twenty-year-old Monica Jones struggles through the rush hour crowds on her way to work when a woman ahead of her drops a folder, scattering papers everywhere. People walk by, but Monica takes a minute to stop and help the woman pick up her documents, handing them over one by one. When thanked, she smiles kindly and says, "No problem!"

The young man risking a broken nose, the customer in Korea and the woman with the documents were no ordinary members of the public. Each was a Reader's Digest researcher taking part in a unique survey to see how helpful and polite people are around the world.

This survey was carried out the following way: Reader's Digest sent out undercover reporters — half of them men, half women — in 35 countries to assess the citizens of their biggest cities. In each location they conducted three tests:

First, the reporters walked into public buildings 20 times behind people to see if they would hold the door open for them.

Secondly, they bought small items from 20 stores and recorded whether the sales assistants said "thank you".

Last, they dropped a folder full of paper in 20 busy locations to see if anyone would help pick them up.

To allow them to compare cities, the reporters awarded one point for each positive outcome and nothing for a negative one, giving each city a maximum score of 60.

So, which cities emerged as most polite? Here’s the top three: New York, Zurich and Toronto. TASK 2 Well, I've been a police officer for more than twenty years now, but I can tell you that the past five years have brought about far more changes in our day-to-day work than the previous fifteen years put together. Obviously, new developments in science have played a very important role in these changes, but the impact of new scientific discoveries has been more gradual. The real revolutionary changes have been brought about by the widespread use of computers in police work.

Let me just give you an example: the traditional method of holding an identification parade, or line-up as our American colleagues call it – you know when an eyewitness might identify a suspect in the flesh -, is rapidly becoming a thing of the past. It was time-consuming and expensive, with only a handful of police stations capable of running a full parade. I'm sure you've all seen it on TV; you know the police had to come up with eight fairly similar people for a parade and the witnesses had to stand behind a two-way mirror so that they were not intimidated by the suspects.

Now – at least here in Britain – it's done in a completely different way: we use computers for the parade and the whole identification procedure is done electronically, it's become a computerised video parade. What happens today is that our specially trained




officers draw from a database of several thousand individuals on video – who, by the way, pick up £80 for a few minutes of their time, so there's no shortage of willing contributors – you know just ordinary people who pop into the station for whatever reason. Each short clip has the same basic shape. The subject sits in front of a white background, looking straight into the camera for five seconds, until a short bleep signals that they are to look to the right. Five seconds later, another bleep indicates that they should turn the other way. Finally, after five seconds again, they turn back to the camera and stare at it for another five seconds until the clip ends.

When it comes to a particular identification parade, officers use half a dozen different search criteria to narrow down those chosen to a similar age and ethnic background; those whose height, weight and colouring are within acceptable parameters. They assemble eight twenty-second clips and use them alongside the clip they've already shot of the suspect. Now it is simply a question of editing them together into a sequence, a montage for the witness to watch with random selection of the chosen extracts built into the software. All the officer has to do is push the button and let the computer do it all for him. It doesn't take longer than three or four minutes in all. Incidentally, the video parade itself is also videoed to make sure that everything is done properly. TASK 3 Brad Duke, aged 34, the manager of a fitness centre in Idaho, US, pocketed a net sum of $85 million after winning the lottery jackpot in 2007. I asked Duke what he's done with his new-found fortune so far. Hi, Duke. Did you often buy lottery tickets or was this a one-time thing? Well, I played the lottery often when I won. I had developed a little numbering system. I looked at the most recent lottery numbers over the last six months and I took the set of 15 numbers that were most commonly coming up. My lottery numbers were going to be those 15. So I starting messing around with them, and I was starting to win smaller amounts like $150 and $500. So many lottery winners have sad endings. Did you worry about that? I … I've always handled responsibility pretty well. I was actually quiet about winning for a month before I decided to come out. During that time, I was getting done as much research as I could on existing lottery winners and what their stories were. Believe or not, most of them lose all the money within a short amount of time, usually in less than ten years. Not me, though! I … I wanted to make the most of the opportunity that was given to me, so I put together a team with the intent of becoming a billionaire, so I spent the first month of my new life assembling a team of financial advisors. So what did you do with the money then? Well, I … I eventually invested about half of my winnings - 45 million in fact - in safe, low-risk investments, and about 35 million in aggressive investments like oil and gas and real estate, and I think it was really a very good idea. We've done very well for the first year and a half, and my total net worth right now is, well, it's at an unofficial value of about $130 million. What was your first major purchase? Yeah, a $63,000 trip to Tahiti for me and 17 of my friends, and I also took my family on a nice long cruise in the Caribbean. What about a big new house or a fancy new car? Now, I guess I'm more worried about spending time on my investments and doing fun things with my family and friends. I will have a new home and a great car at some point, but just not now.




You must have treated yourself to something. I…I did buy some bicycles, including a $12,000 BMC road bike. All in all, I've spent, well, about $65,000 on my bikes, and I probably own more than 17 bikes now. I also bought a 2002 VW Jetta, and I gave my 2005 Jetta to my nephew. So… it's the exact same car except for his is white and mine is black. You had a newer car that you gave to your nephew and you bought an older car? Yeah, that's correct. I wanted a black Jetta with a black interior. Believe it or not, those are really hard to find. What happened to your job at the fitness centre? Yes, I … well, I still teach a work-out class there twice a week. I took some time off after the whole thing because I had to spend a lot of time with my investments at the beginning. So I had to get out of there for a while, but when I went back, the people I'd been teaching for the last 8 years were still the same people, and I was still the same instructor. Are you happier since you won the money? Absolutely. When it comes down to it, I get to do the things professionally that I've always wanted to do. I get to invent a piece of gym equipment for my fitness centre that I've always been thinking about doing, and I also get to give back to some people that have given to me over years.

3 pont 2 pont 1 pont 0 pont A szöveg felépítése, az irányító szempontok elrendezése logikus. A gondolati tagolás meg-felelő: van bevezetés és befejezés, bekezdéseket alkalmaz. A vizsgázó megfelelően használja a szövegössze-függés tartalmi és nyelvi elemeit, koherens szöveget hoz létre.

A szöveg felépítése, az irányító szempontok elrendezése a kisebb aránytalanságok ellenére logikus. A vizsgázó törekszik a gondolati tagolásra: van bevezetés vagy befejezés. A vizsgázó többnyire megfelelően használja a szövegösszefüggés tartalmi és nyelvi elemeit. A mondatok többnyire szervesen kapcsolódnak egymáshoz.

A mondanivaló nem min-denütt logikus elrendezé-sű. A vizsgázó nem törekszik a gondolati tagolásra: hi-ányzik a bevezetés és a befejezés. A mondatok több helyen nem kapcsolódnak egy-máshoz.

A szövegben felhasznált szókincs szegényes, a nyelvhasználat igényte-len. A nem megfelelő szóhasználat több helyen nehezíti a megértést.

5. Nyelvhelyesség, helyesírás

3 pont 2 pont 1 pont 0 pont A vizsgázó változatos és az emelt szintnek megfe-lelő nyelvtani szerkeze-teket használ, mondatszer-kesztése igényes. A szöveg igényes, esetleg néhány kisebb, a szöveg megértését nem nehezítő nyelvi (mondattani, alak-tani, helyesírási) hiba ta-lálható benne.

A vizsgázó törekszik az emelt szintnek megfelelő nyelvtani szerkezetek használatára és az igényes mondat-szerkesztésre. A szöveg-ben több, a szöveg megér-tését nem nehezítő nyelvi (mondattani, alaktani, he-lyesírási) hiba vagy egy-két, a szöveg megértését nehezítő hiba található.

A vizsgázó egyszerű nyelvtani szerkezeteket használ, és nem törekszik igényes mondatszerkesz-tésre. A szövegben több, a szö-veg megértését nem befo-lyásoló, vagy néhány, a szöveg megértését nehe-zítő hiba található.

Ezen a szemponton belül azt értékeljük, hogy a vizsgázó által használt szókincs megfelel-e a témának, a szituációnak és a közlési szándéknak; hogy a szóhasználat az emelt szintnek megfelelő igényességet és változatosságot mutat-e.

A szöveg felépítése az irányító szempontok és az ezekhez kapcsolódó gondolatok, érvek elren-dezése többnyire logikus.
