Definitions

AACR = content standard for resource description and access

MARC = communication and exchange format providing a structure for encoding the content of bibliographic and authority data

ISBD = rules that organise the display of a bibliographic description of an item in a catalogue

Levels of cataloguing

-Full-level cataloging: Records that meet the requirements of second-level description (AACR2, rule 1.0D2)

-Core-level cataloging: Records that meet the requirements of first-level description (AACR2, rule 1.0D1) and some of the requirements of second-level description (AACR2, rule 1.0D2).

-Minimal-level cataloging: Records that meet the requirements of first-level description (AACR2, rule 1.0D1).

Types of cataloguing

Original cataloguing: For MARC records, when you input a new master record cataloged according to current cataloging practices and AACR2. the library code is mentioned in the field 040 (code 040##|aLB-ChIUL)

Copy cataloguing: A MARC record exists. You modify the record for local use and create a copy of the record with your modifications. (040##|aLC|bLB-ChIUL)

Transcribing cataloging copy: You create a master record using an existing non-MARC record (040##|aLC|bLC|cLB-CIUL)

AACR2 Key principles

• One principle entry per resource Authority/access point control it is the process whereby consistency of form is maintained in the headings (names, uniform titles, series titles, subjects), retrievable form authority files/vocabularies

• Items lacking a title = the cataloguer can make up a title for an item but MUST put it in [brackets]
