Analyzing the Stages of Mitosis

Theme:Organization

Page 2: Analyzing the Stages of Mitosis Theme: Organization.

Starter…pair discussion

• How would you identify each of the following stages?– Interphase– Telophase– Metaphase

• When looking at any tissue, what stage do you expect most of the cells to be in?

• How would the amount of stem cells in mitosis, compare to the amount of muscle cells in mitosis?

Page 3: Analyzing the Stages of Mitosis Theme: Organization.

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

• Identify the stages of the cell cycle in plant cells.

• Explain how and why mitotic rates differ in cortex and meristem.

• Apply understanding of mitotic rate to a cancerous tissue.

Plant Tissues

• Vascular• Dermal• Ground• Meristem

Applying the plant tissues to looking at a root tip!

• Vascular Bundle:– No nuclei!

• Cortex:– Metabolically

active• Meristem:– Growth of tip

Cortex cells are largerMeristem cells are smaller

Introduction:

• Review interphase, mitosis, and cytokinesis and write a paragraph discussing the cell cycle.

Page 8: Analyzing the Stages of Mitosis Theme: Organization.

Methods:

• Independent variable: What we are comparing!

• Dependent variable: What data will be collected!

• Controls: How to count in pairs!
