Goodbye, Dry SkinWinter’s cool, dry air can leave
skin rough and itchy. Take thesesteps to banish dry skin:
Bathing. Hot water can zapskin of essential moisture, sotake lukewarm showers andbaths, and limit them to10 minutes or less. Use a gentlesoap and dry off by blottinggently with a towel.
Moisturize. Apply moisturizerimmediately after bathing whileskin is still damp. Try creams orointments, which are thicker thanlotions, and look for productsthat contain shea butter, olive oilor petroleum jelly. Use itthroughout the day, especiallyafter washing your hands.
Hydrate. You’ve probablyheard the expression “You arewhat you eat.” The right nutritioncan hydrate you from the insideout. Drink plenty of water andavoid caffeine, which cancontribute to dehydration. Many fruits and vegetables arehigh in water content, and theomega-3 fats found in foodssuch as salmon, tuna, nuts andolive oil can help your bodyretain moisture.
Heating. Avoid sitting near afireplace, furnace vent or otherheat sources. If possible, use ahumidifier to combat dryindoor air.
Bedtime. Hands and feet areoften the driest parts of the body,so slather them with lotion beforebed. To treat especially dry skin, wear cotton gloves and socksovernight to trap moisture.
