World’s Championship Horse Show Results and Judges’ Cards | 1 | Monday, August 23, 2010

The first State Fair took place at Churchill Downsin Louisville, Kentucky, in 1902. As the show enteredits second decade in 1913, many classes had beenadded, and business and individuals were sponsoringtrophies and monetary awards.

The first $10,000 Five-Gaited World’s GrandChampionship, which would forever be the high pointof the show, began in 1917 with the victory of EasterCloud, John Hook up, for Longview Farm of Lee’sSummit, Missouri.

It was in 1936 that the Three-Gaited and Fine Har-ness World’s Grand Championships were established, with the first Three-Gaited winner being AmericanModel out of Texas, and the inaugural Fine Harnesswinner being Allen Adair of Kentucky.

In 1942, no show was held, as the United States hadentered World War II, and the Kentucky State Fair-grounds was being used for “war production pur-poses.” In 1943, Colonel Matt J. Winn offered the useof Churchill Downs for the show, free of charge, rescu-ing the show, and according to Saddle & Bridle, prizesfor that year’s show were given in the form of warbonds, rather than the customary silver trophies.

The 1950s saw construction of the new KentuckyState Fairgrounds, and in 1956 the first performance ofthe World’s Championship Horse Show was held inFreedom Hall. The building program had begun in1949 and was completed at a cost of $16 million.

The year of 1964 brought to the Fair the services oftwo dedicated gentlemen, William Munford andJoseph Stopher, who served together in their capacitieslonger than anyone before. As a member of the Ken-tucky State Fair Board from 1968-1996, Stopher was

the Board Member in charge of the Horse Show. BillMunford, who had begun helping in various capacitiesin the 1960s, began his 27-year tenure as Manager ofthe Horse Show in 1972. It is through their efforts thatthe World’s Championship Horse Show has reachedthe pinnacle on which it stands today.

The eighth decade of the show, beginning in 1974,showed the passing on of the “old guard” among train-ers and owners with young newcomers taking theirplaces in the winner’s circle. With many of the largefarms gone, show entries became more diverse; morehorses were from far-flung states. It was during this pe-riod that we saw the so far unparalleled rivalry be-tween CHImperator and CHSky Watch.

In the show’s ninth decade, which began in 1984,these two continued to thrill audiences with their ri-valry with CHSky Watch being the first horse ever towin the Five-Gaited World’s Grand Championshipwith a lady rider, doing so in 1988. The names of theshow’s champions are etched indelibly in the history ofthe breed, and every year at Louisville we applaud thedescendents of the grand old stallions and members ofthe American Saddlebred Horse Association’s Brood-mare Hall of Fame.

More recent decades have seen changes as well.Among other changes to the venue, the seating areasand the show arena were reconfigured to better accom-modate other sporting events, and the lighting is nowbrilliant. Daily coverage of the show is provided viawww.ashalive.net, and a live streaming video internetwebcast of the show is also provided by ASHA eachyear, so those unable to make the trip can still watchthe show live, from their homes.
