As the Dog Days of summer count down, we’re looking forward to seeing everyone at our general membership meeting on Monday, September 18th, at 7 PM in the Christ Church Ministry Center on Middle Street. It will be a great opportunity to catch up on what we’ve all been doing these last few months. We had a great evening earlier this month when we welcomed those moving up from Newcomers into the Alumni Group. Special thanks to Dianne Koonce & her helpers for putting this event together. Our activity groups will be filling up the coming months with interesting & fun events. These are the heart of AGN and we hope you’ll find groups that match your interests. If we don’t have an activity you enjoy and you think others would like, jump in and start one. Like the song says, see you in September! Mark & Michelle Leonard Co-Presidents [email protected]

As I write this, the sun’s about to go dark for a few minutes; hoping that will cool things down a bit at least for a while! Newcomers Alumni Club offers a variety of activity groups designed not only to provide you with new friends and fun, but also opportunities to learn, lead and
most importantly, laugh! You may participate in as many activities as you desire. We also offer special activities throughout the year. In the following pages is a description of each activity group currently available including any scheduled
events/activities. Some activity Groups are not active during the summer, but they will all resume in September.
Participation in any Alumni or Joint Newcomer/Alumni Group Activity or Event requires that the prospective participant be a member in good standing in the AGN.
How do you sign up? To join a group, contact an activity leader or co-chair
directly.
If you have a suggestion for a new activity, and you are willing to lead the
Purpose: The Newcomers/Alumni Bicycling Group is for those individuals who like to get exercise while enjoying the scenery around New Bern. We feature 'no drop' rides--which means we don't leave anyone behind! We have been working to design options that allow more serious bikers to enjoy a longer distance at a faster pace, but also provide a choice for more leisurely riders to go at a more comfortable pace. We take breaks as needed. Routes will vary, allowing participants the chance to see different neighborhoods and the surrounding countryside
Requested Gear:
1. A working bicycle (brakes, gears) with adequate safety items - lights, reflectors
2. A Helmet is mandatory.
3. Carry adequate water (minimum – 1 pt. / 500 ml).
4. Casual clothing (shorts) and top with bright colors.
Air pumps and/or lights are an option.
Meeting Place:
A group email, including directions to a starting point, is sent out for weekend rides.
The activity leaders check the weather and weigh other factors as to when an event can be
scheduled. Due to these factors, events are scheduled with short time frames (within 1 to 2
weeks.) So have your helmet ready! If anyone wants to be notified of rides, they can email
Keith at [email protected]. Dave Gerde will be gone over the summer, so Keith will
likely be the only one scheduling rides.
Bike Riding Group So far this summer, the bike riding group has been active with rides along both old and new routes. The last ride at Fairfield Harbor was exceptionally well attended (see picture). We often 'celebrate' after a successful event by going to a local restaurant--and the group retired to the Big Apple Pizzeria for a great lunch!
September will be a busy month for me personally, so it is possible that there will be no rides scheduled for the month. But, be prepared as we plan to kick things into gear again in October. I am planning on doing another Fairfield Harbor ride, and also the Minnesott to Oriental route among others in October. If you aren't on our email mailing list but would like to be, please send me a note at [email protected]. We are a 'no drop' group, and always have a good time!
Alumni has formed “THE BOOK BABES” Book Group which meets 1-3 pm on the 4th Thursday of each month. We have agreed to take the 5 “graduating” members of the newcomers book club. For more information please contact Jan Manning at 252-638-5588 or [email protected].
Dining Out is an opportunity to experience restaurants in New Bern and the surrounding areas. It’s a chance to sample the chef’s specialties and enjoy the company of other
alumni.
The Dining Out group meets monthly for either lunch or dinner. We try to sample a
variety of cuisines within a range of proves (nothing too expensive!) Depending on the
location, there may be a group size limit; sign up early! Each monthly event requires an
RSVP via email to Mark.
Dining Out is probably one of the most attended activities within the AGN and is a fun
group to participate in if you enjoy eating out and exploring new places (and some old
favorites) to dine in the area. You must sign up by email to Mark
([email protected]) to receive notice of each month’s planned event.
NOTICE: As Mark has assumed the awesome responsibilities of the AGN presidency, he
would very much appreciate someone stepping up to take over as the Dining Out activity
group leader. Mark would be happy to discuss what it entails; give Mark a call or drop
him an email.
Date Time Location
Wed, Sept 13 6:30 pm Prohibition, 237 Craven Street
The AGN Dining Out in September will be at Prohibition (237 Craven Street, New Bern) at 6:30 on Sept 13th. You can check out their menu, including gluten-free and vegan options, on their website: http://www.thegrillatprohibition.com/ We’ll be dining in the outside covered patio. Due to space limitations, they can accommodate up to 24 people in this area. Please RSVP (first come, first listed) to me not later than Sept 9th. Hope to see you there.
The goal is to have fun while playing Mexican Train Dominoes. Dominoes are a simple, easy
to learn game played by people of all ages for centuries. You sit at a table of 6; you do not play with partners. The object is to play off all your dominoes. You play off onto your own train, onto the Mexican Train and onto other players “marked trains”. This game is a great way to socialize in a small group. We are seeking a total of 18 players, which are divided among 3 households. The Host will provide a dessert and the other players will bring an appetizer for 6 people to be shared, PLUS any additional beverage of your choice that you would like to personally drink that evening. Anyone wanting to be on the alternate list [to fill in when the 18 players can't make it that month] can also let me know. To sign up for the next season of scheduled Mexican Train Dominoes gatherings, contact the Activity Leader (Lynn Wilson) preferably by e-mail [email protected] or phone 978-618-4517 and I will have a sign up sheet at first AGN meeting. The First Mexican Train Dominoes would begin in October after sign up at the first AGN meeting. I will send out the dominoes schedule for the year through May in the Domino Matrix. In the spring, it can be decided if anyone would like to play the summer months. The domino groups have traditionally been meeting on Thursdays [or the Host has negotiated a different day with that month's attendees]. I want to hear from everyone when they sign up if Wednesdays would work. [Wednesday is a request of one of the couples.] Also if the second or third week of the month would work the best. Example would be; yes or no to Wednesday, yes or no to Thursday or both fine week two – 1
Throughout the September – May season, we try to choose outdoor activities that are appealing to everyone. The adventures are not competitive in nature. The adventures have included: kayaking/ canoeing, hiking, kite flying, bicycle riding, and boat rides. We either bring our lunch or stop by a nearby restaurant.
We don’t have participants sign up unless it is an activity that must be more stringent in head count. Our slogan is “No sign-up, just show up at the event” and rain-out is constituted by already raining or bad outlook during the time of the adventure.
