Starting in the dead of winter, the world outside a drab palate of brown and gray, barren, the whole season just seems sort of depressing. It all builds to the agony in the Garden on the night Jesus was arrested and then the horror of the Cross and His death. Executions aren’t particularly fun or inspiring. On top of that, you start the whole thing with ashes pressed into your forehead and then deny yourself of something you like, enjoy, even relish. Lent becomes then, at least for me, an exercise in just trying to hold off on chocolate or soft drinks or some such thing until the bitter end. I’m merely struggling to make it, sometimes just until midnight on Saturday before Easter. Depressing is the word that jumps to mind when I think of Lent. And frankly, that’s exactly the way it should be. My sin – the transgressions and failings that sent Jesus to that rugged, nasty cross – is not something to take lightly. It saddens, even sickens me when I think of my shortcomings, of my selfishness and desire to chart my own course. Lent, the journey to the Cross, is a somber, solemn trek, not a raucous romp of merriment. Every now and then, in the midst of this Lenten darkness, a glimmer of grace shines forth. A bird warbles brightly in the morning chill, a flower dares send forth a bloom, a calf skitters carefree across a pasture. Perhaps the afternoon sun grows warm and we shed our jackets, maybe the emerald green of a patch of grass shimmers a bit brighter. “Hang on,” it all seems to say. For the Lenten path ends not on top of Calvary’s peak but at that Empty Tomb. I confess I really don’t much like Lent. Starting in the dead of winter, the world outside a drab palate of brown and gray, barren, the whole season just seems sort of depressing. REVOLUTION CAFE' SUNDAY FEB. 22nd
I was talking with a man this morning and we were talking about how blessed we truly are. Blessed to be alive,
and to be loved by a God that is and will always be for us and not against us. Blessed beyond what we will ever deserve.
We began to talk about what our part was in all this, our part of dealing with the multitude of blessings we get, and his response was simple, yet perfect, " we should praise Him
with how we live!" Our life is the single most outward symbol that we have been born anew and are living a life
filled with the love of Christ. We can give lip service to many things in life, but our life and the actions and decisions we
make will speak volumes louder than anything we will ever say. The Bible tells of only one way to Heaven, yet it spends
hundreds of thousands of words describing how a person should act who is going to heaven. We are citizens of
heaven the moment we profess our trust in Christ as our savior, now let’s show the world with our humble lives that
we belong to where we are headed.
Live it, then you will have no real need to say it, they will notice and want to know what you have they don't, then you
get a chance to put your words into action. jason
