Hurricane Katrina
"My whole life changed because of Hurricane Katrina," says Jerry Longman. "My
house and my neighborhood disappeared in that terrible day." Jerry was living in
New Orleans when the hurricane hit. The waters flooded the city and destroyed
hundreds of buildings. Jerry is lucky to be alive.
Hurricane Katrina hit the United States on August 29, 2005. It was one of the worst
hurricanes that ever happened in the United States: 1800 people died and one million
people had to leave their homes. It was especially bad in New Orleans, where 80% of
the city was covered with water.
When the hurricane hit, Jerry was at home with his grandfather. He remembers, "The
water started coming into the house and soon it was more than a meter high. We
made a big hole in the roof so we could get out. We waited on the roof for two days.
Finally a helicopter came and rescued us.
Barbara Shell's neighborhood was destroyed. She and her family had to live in an
emergency center with 30,000 people for a week. Then, they went to live with
friends in New York for a year. When Barbara returned to New Orleans, she joined
an organization that helps other survivors. "People lost everything they owned," she
says. "Some people even lost family members and friends. These people will suffer
for a very long time."
It has taken years for the survivors to start their new lives. Some people built their
houses again in their old neighborhoods. Others left New Orleans and moved to
different cities. Lucy Jones, a 13-year-old, says that she learned something important.
"It was really hard. Sometimes we didn't even have food or water. But I was thankful
that I didn't lose my family or friends. The experience taught me just how important
family and friends are."

SURVIVOR IN ISRAEL

Imagine that you are on a beautiful, tropical island in the middle of the ocean! You wake up in your room in a modern hotel. Every morning you go swimming, relax under shady trees and watch the sun go down in the evening. Now, think of a different situation. You have nothing on this island except for some drinking water. No electricity and no modern technology. Not even a flashlight!

This is what happens in Survivor – a very popular reality TV show in Israel and in other countries in the world. In all Survivor programs, a group of people goes to an island. Sometimes the members of the group help each other, and sometimes they fight against each other. The island is usually in a hot area. The sun is very strong, so people can get sunstroke. Sometimes the sun burns them. There are also dangerous animals such as crocodiles and snakes. 3
The first Israeli Survivor began with 20 people on an island. Most of the people were young and strong. Every day they did different things. Sometimes they were in groups, and sometimes they were on their own. They ran and crawled on the sand, swam in the water, and made traps to catch animals and fish. They climbed up walls and built things. The members of the group chose who stayed and who had to leave the island. After 52 days, only one person survived all the difficult situations and won the prize. This person became the “survivor”.
