The Francis S. Levien Gymnasium was opened at the start of the 1974 season, replacing the University Gym, which contin-ues to serve as an intramural facility. With a capacity of 2,700, Levien Gym is one of the larger facilities in the league.
In the summer of 2002, a brand new state-of-the-art floor was installed that provides better spring and cushion for Columbia’s student-athletes. The project, a coopera-tive effort between Columbia University’s department of facility management and its department of physical education and inter-collegiate athletics, cost nearly $1 million. The improvements include a custom floor created by J.J. Curran of Connor Flooring Systems. The custom floor features 1.5-inch boards, different from the normal 2.25-inch boards. The thinner, more tightly-packed boards provide more stability for the surface. In the summer of 2004, the gym underwent yet another major aesthetic renovation, as new bleachers were added. The new floor, modern seating and new signage combine to give the Lions a true home-court advantage.
Levien Gym is part of the Marcellus Hart-ley Dodge Physical Fitness Center, which underwent major renovations in 1996, mak-ing it one of the premier athletic facilities in the Ivy League. The locker rooms were improved, the indoor track was resurfaced, and the weight and workout facilities were dramatically revamped.

Standing 6-foot-4, George Gregory towered over most of his fellow basketball players in the late 1920s. Gregory was distinctive for two other reasons — he was the second African-American ever to play basketball at Columbia and the first anywhere to be voted All-American.
In his first season, he helped the Lions to fourth place in the Eastern League, forerunner of the Ivy League. By his junior year, Columbia had moved into first place in the league.
Columbia basketball took off in 1930-31, Gregory’s senior season. Serving as the Lions’ captain, he led them to 21 wins in 23 games and a second league title. He was named first team All-Eastern League, his third straight honor in four years, finishing with 509 career points, extremely high for the era.
Gregory had attracted national attention, and he was voted first team Helms Foundation All-America, being joined on the team by Purdue guard John Wooden, later to become the legendary UCLA basketball coach.
While still an undergraduate, Gregory began a lifelong career battling juvenile delinquency and defending civil rights. He served as the boys’ director for the largest youth project for African-Americans in the nation, the Harlem Center of the Children’s Aid Society.
He went on to hold administrative positions at settlement houses and youth clubs such as the Harlem Youth Center and the First Neighborhood House. He was a founding member of the NYC Youth Board in 1947.
From 1954 to 1968 Gregory was a commissioner on the Municipal Civil Service Commission, while spending 15 years in the office of the Manhattan Borough President. From 1968 to 1979 he was an assistant administrator of what is now the Department of Environmental Protection.
Gregory passed away in Manhattan on May 11, 1994, at the age of 88.
Many images of Chet Forte remain to this day. Forte racing down the middle of the court, Forte going up for his virtually unstoppable jump shot, Forte leading the fast break.
But none are more vivid than a still photograph, not an action shot, but a team shot, and not just any team.
The photo is of the 1957 All-American team. University of Kansas giant Wilt Chamberlain dominates the “team”, but the person who immediately catches your eye is Chet Forte — the smallest man on the All-American team, but the best.
In 1956-57, his senior season, he scored 694 points in 24 games, a 28.9 average, and was voted college basketball’s Player of the Year, beating out the seven-foot Chamberlain and West Virginia great Hot Rod Hundley. Forte was a consensus All-America, won the Haggerty Award as the top player in the New York Metropolitan area and was All-Ivy League and All-Met-ropolitan. He played in the national College All-Star Game and set a scoring record with 32 points.
Forte earned All-Ivy League status in his first season of varsity eligibility (1954-55) and went on to earn All-America honors in 1955-56 and 1956-57. Forte scored 1,611 points in 65 games, averaging 24.8 points per game for his career.
In 1956-57, he set all of the Columbia scoring records, including points per game (28.9), free-throw percentage (85.2%) field goals made (235), free throws made (224) and points in a season (694). Forte still holds all but one of those records.
His one-game scoring record of 45 points, set in 1957 against Penn, stood until Buck Jenkins scored 47 against Harvard in 1991.
After a short career in minor league pro basketball, the Hackensack, N.J., native went into sports broadcasting with ABC. He gained fame as the celebrated ABC sports director who helped to launch Monday Night Football. As its first director, he earned a directing Emmy Award. He worked 25 years at ABC, and directed the network coverage of two Olympic games.
In later years, Forte became a popular radio sports talk show host on XTRA in San Diego. He passed away there May 18, 1996, at age 60.

Times have changed in the college basketball game. Nowadays, prospective players break into the spotlight when they are just entering high school. By the time they have reached their junior year, their college choices have been whittled down to a half dozen or so and their NBA draft status is already under conjecture.
The 1966-67 Columbia freshman team ranked as one of the best in the Metropolitan Area, whetting the basketball fans’ appetite for the 1967-68 varsity squad.
Under the direction of head coach Jack Rohan, the Lions did not disappoint, winning their first four over Lehigh, CCNY, NYU, and Rutgers. But they lost their next three, all on the road, an Ivy League game at Cornell and contests against Georgetown and Fordham.
They then headed into the Holiday Festival, then college basketball’s most prestigious in-season tournament, an eight-team affair held over three days at Madison Square Garden. The field boasted three top-20 opponents; West Virginia was first on the Lions’ path.
The Lions stunned the nationally ranked Mountaineers, 94-68, and went on to defeat No. 2 Louisville, 74-67, to advance to the cham-pionship game of the tournament vs. St. John’s. The Lions defeated St. John’s, 60-55, to claim their first and only Holiday Festival title. Sophomore Jim McMillian was voted tournament MVP and the eyes of the basketball world turned toward Morningside Heights.
Back in the Ivy League, the Lions piled it on. They avenged the early loss to Cornell and trounced the Big Red, 93-51, then topped Penn by 21 and powerful Princeton by nine.
Dangerous Dartmouth was defeated on the road, but by only six points. Columbia then won at Harvard, 103-70. They met the same two teams back in New York, routing the Big Green, 86-58 and the Crimson, 115-56. The latter set Columbia’s all-time scoring record, which stood until a 118-90 victory over Wagner in 1977.
Three more victories followed, giving Columbia a streak of 16 triumphs, but the Lions dropped the final regular-season game at Princ-eton, 68-57, necessitating a playoff.
Columbia fans packed St. John’s 6000-seat Alumni Hall for the Ivy League championship and the right to play in the NCAA tourna-ment. In one of the greatest victories in Columbia history, the Lions defeated the Tigers 92-74 for the championship.
They were victorious in their first NCAA game, defeating La Salle, 83-69, but then lost in the East Regional semifinals to Davidson, 61-59, on the Wildcats’ “home turf” in Raleigh, North Carolina. Columbia concluded its dream season with a 95-75 victory over St. Bo-naventure in the consolation game.
Columbia had won 23 of 28 games, the most victories in school history, and finished the season ranked sixth in the nation. Jack Rohan was voted National Coach of the Year and both McMillian and 7-0 center Dave Newmark earned All-American honors. McMillian also was ECAC All-East and the ECAC Sophomore of the Year, and won the Haggerty Award as the top player in New York City.

From 1946 to 1950, the Columbia Lions were one of the top college basketball teams in the east. In four years under head coach Gordon Ridings, the Lions won 77 percent of their games, and won the championship of the Eastern Intercollegiate League – the precursor to the Ivy League – twice, finishing second the other two seasons.
Hopes were high on Morningside Heights for another outstanding year in 1950-51. The Lions had won their last nine games of the 1949-50 season. Captain John Azary was coming off a 423-point season, the most prolific scoring year in Columbia Basket-ball history – and the Lions were returning a deep squad of talented upper classmen and rising sophomores.
Just prior to the campaign – Columbia was dealt a significant blow when coach Rid-ings took ill with a heart attack just days before the season. Assistant coach Lou Rossini stepped in and took over as acting head coach – at the age of 29.
After a tuneup over an alumni team, Columbia tipped off the season at University Gymnasium on December 6, 1950, and gave a glimpse of the season to come with a 41-point thrashing of Amherst College, 79-38.
Throughout December the wins kept coming, including four straight on the road as Columbia ended the calendar year with a perfect 7-0 record.
The Eastern Intercollegiate Basketball League season began in January and the Lions faced their traditional slate of Ivy foes.In the League opener, Bob Reiss led the way with 19 points and 12 rebounds in an 85-45 blowout of the Cornell Big Red.The second league game was against arch-rival Princeton – the defending league champions. With seconds remaining, and the game
in the balance, sixth man Robert Sullivan stole the ball and went in for the layup in a 53-52 victory, the Lions closest call all year.In an era where teams averaged less than 40% from the field, Tom Powers led the team - and the conference - in shooting percentage,
hitting on 47% of his shots in league play.Statisically, this team’s numbers are staggering: 12-0 in conference play, 21-0 overall, and 31 straight victories since the end of the
1949-1950 season. The Lions set team records in points per game, margin of victory and established a new Eastern League record for field goals.
Although the Lions lost to a talented Illinois squad in the opening round of the NCAA tournament in a hard-fought 79-71 game – the legacy of this magnificent team still stands as one for the ages.

New York City high schools turn out an abundance of scholastic basketball All-Americans each year. Few choose to at-tend an Ivy League college and even fewer opt for Columbia.
“Jimmy Mac” did and Columbia will never forget him.“It was a strong school academically and it was close to home,” McMillian told Mike Scheinkman in a January 2000
Columbia Daily Spectator interview. “I didn’t even realize how strong the basketball program was.”After playing on the freshman team his first year at Columbia, McMillian moved up to the varsity in 1967-68. Teaming
up with several other talented players, McMillian led the Lions to the winningest season in the school’s history, a 23-5 campaign that included the Ivy League championship (he won the Haggerty Award as the top collegiate player in New York City), the Holiday Festival in Madison Square Garden (defeating West Virginia, Louisville and St. John’s on suc-cessive days) and reaching the second round of the NCAA Championships. McMillian, the Holiday Festival MVP, drew national attention as Columbia finished the season ranked sixth in the nation.
The success continued the next two years, as Columbia posted 20-4 and 20-5 seasons, narrowly missing Ivy titles each year. Jimmy Mac was All-Ivy and All-American each season.
In leading Columbia to a three-year mark of 63-14, McMillian not only was a three-time All-American and All-Ivy Leaguer, he was All-East each year, the ECAC Sophomore of the Year, and became the first person ever to earn the Haggerty Award in each of his three varsity seasons.
He scored 1758 career points (then a record, now second) and averaged 22.9 points per game (second-best then and now). He is also second in career rebounds (743) and holds the season records for field goals in a season (253) and career (677).
He was drafted in the first round by both the L.A. Lakers of the NBA and N.Y. Nets of the ABA. He chose the Lakers and spent three years there, scoring 3714 points, an average of 15.3 per game.

John Azary was born and raised in New York City where he learned to play basketball on the hard cement of the school-yard grounds. Azary began his career at Columbia with large shoes to fill, replacing the great Walt Budko, who had just graduated Columbia to pursue a career in the National Basketball Association.
In his first year at Columbia, Azary scored 298 points in 20 games, averaging 14.9 ppg, surpassing Budko’s first-year scoring record. Throughout his career at Columbia, Azary was always one of the hardest workers on the team, on and off the court. Always the first to come to practice and the last to leave, head coach Gordon Ridings said, “I never saw a harder worker than John. He once stayed an hour after practice taking foul shots because he had missed two out of ten free throws in the previous night’s game.”
Along with being a basketball superstar, John Azary was a member of the National Guard. While at Pine Camp, N.Y., one summer for National Guard training, Azary caught a piece of shrapnel in his thigh during an exercise where live ammunition was being used. He was hospitalized for a month and his college basketball career was in question,
but the wound eventually healed and he was able to successfully reclaim the Lions’ court. After four stellar years, Azary graduated Columbia College in 1951 with a sociology degree. After military service in the Korean War, he continued his basketball career in the Eastern League, a professional minor league.
On September 15, 1981, Azary passed away at the age of 51.
Walt BuDKOSecond Class1948CC
In the early days of the National Basketball Association, Columbia’s own Walt Budko became one of its pioneers. The sixth overall draft pick in the 1948 draft, he went on to play professionally for four seasons, including one as
player-coach for the Baltimore Bullets.Budko grew up in Brooklyn, and attended Franklin K. Lane High School and Trinity Prep. After high school, Budko
continued his academic and basketball careers at Columbia. He arrived in September 1942 and made the varsity team in his first year under wartime eligibility rules. In his rookie season, he tied the all-time Columbia single-season scoring record by totaling 251 points in 18 games. Also in his first year, Budko played an astonishing 706 minutes out of a total of 720 minutes throughout the entire season.
Naval service split Budko’s tenure at Columbia after his sophomore year. Budko spent roughly three years in the Navy, 15 months of that time stationed in the Pacific. He returned in 1946 to finish his last two years at Columbia, newly married. In the 1946-47 season, Budko scored 315 points in 20 games setting a new Columbia record. A four-time All-Ivy
League honoree, Budko graduated in 1948 with more basketball accolades than anyone who preceded him, bringing a new face to Columbia Basketball.
Budko played professionally in Baltimore and Philadelphia for four years. He eventually left basketball to join the business world, working as a construction engineer and in real estate sales before finding his calling in insurance sales.
Budko worked in insurance sales from 1958 until his retirement in 1995. He is married with four children, one of whom, Pete Budko, starred on the basketball court for the University of North Carolina.

Alton Byrd flew from San Francisco to New York, excited to see what Columbia could offer him. Four years later, Byrd left as one of the most decorated basketball players in Columbia history. If that wasn’t enough, Byrd took his skills overseas and became known as “Great Britain’s greatest ambassador of the game.”
Byrd made an immediate impact, being named the Ivy League Rookie of the Year after his first varsity season. The point guard would go on to receive first team All-Ivy League recognition in his three seasons.
Despite only playing three varsity seasons, Byrd still holds the career and single season records for assists. His 210 and 193 assists rank first and second all-time in a single season, while his 526 career assists is in a world of is own.
A three-year captain, Byrd was awarded the Frances Naismith Award by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, given to the nation’s top collegiate player under six feet tall, elected after his senior season.
Byrd was selected by the Boston Celtics in the tenth round of the draft, but didn’t make the team, however, he had another offer awaiting him. A Columbia alumnus, David Dubow ‘56BUS, offered Bryd the opportunity to work in his market research company in London and play for a basketball team he owned, Crystal Palace.
Once again, Byrd’s impact was immediately felt, as Crystal Palace went 50-5 during his first year in England. He was named the Player of the Year in the British professional league after the 1979-80 and 1980-81 seasons.
Byrd remained in the British Isles for almost 15 years as a player, coach, and team president. He is regarded as the most important figure in the growth of British basketball. He returned to the United States in the 1990s, joining the NBA’s Sacramento Kings as a vice president. He and his family still reside in Northern California.

Bruce Gehrke was a typical three-sport star coming out of Sewanhaka High School in Floral Park, Long Island, but it was football that eventually became paramount in Gehrke’s life.
It was a good choice for the future Columbia great who eventually went on to play for his hometown New York Gi-ants and spent several years coaching high school football and basketball on his native Long Island.
Gehrke began his collegiate career at Columbia in September 1942. In his first year, he starred on the varsity football, basketball and baseball teams.
The following year, Gehrke played shortstop for Columbia’s 1944 championship baseball team, while training for the Navy. Hugely popular among his teammates and fellow students, Gehrke had that intangible flair for color that made him a crowd pleaser. His play, in every sport, was daring and spectacular, with little regard for personal safety, yet he was as crafty a competitor as anyone could have been.
Even competition in three varsity sports couldn’t fill Gehrke’s appetite for athletics, so he coached his fraternity basketball team in intramural play.
Gehrke’s college career was cut into two parts when he spent a year with the Navy overseas in Okinawa during World War II. He returned to Columbia for his junior year in September 1946.
Gehrke graduated from Columbia in 1948, finishing a phenomenal career that included a league title in baseball, two in basketball as well as some of the Lions’ most successful football seasons.

In the 108-year history of Columbia Basketball, nobody has ever scored more points in a Lion uniform than Leonard “Buck” Jenkins. His 1,767 career points at Columbia is a record that still stands today.
An impact player from the moment he arrived on Morningside Heights, Jenkins was part of the revitalization of Columbia Basketball in the early 1990s.
In his sophomore season, Jenkins put the Ivy League on notice with his slashing style of play – averaging 18 points per game and being selected to the All-Ivy League first team.
That year, on February 15, 1991, Jenkins torched the Harvard Crimson for 47 points – a school record which stands today. Even more impressive was that he didn’t even attempt a single three-point field goal, allowing Jenkins to be paired with Shaquille O’Neal as the only two collegians that season to score 40 or more points in a game without the benefit of a three-pointer.
Jenkins was the Lions’ leading scorer in each of his final three seasons, named first-team All Ivy League each time.In his senior year, Jenkins led the Lions to a 16-10 record and a second place finish in the Ivy League, averaging
22.2 points per game on his way to being named Ivy League Player of the Year and first-team All-Metropolitan.After playing for two years in Europe and serving an assistant coach at his alma mater, Jenkins now resides in
Georgia and works at Inner Strength, Inc., a youth development program that uses basketball as a tool to mentor and better shape the lives of young males.
