• The Ivy League (Ivies, Ancient Eight) is an informal association that consists of the eight most elite Universities in the Northeastern United States.

• Students all over the world are dreaming about entering one of these Universities

The first usage of ‘Ivy’in reference to a group of colleges is from sportwriter Stanley Woodward in October 14, 1933, describing the football season:

“A proportion of our eastern ivy colleges are meeting little fellows another Saturday before plunging into the strife and turmoil”

After 1954 this organization stopped having deal only with sport business and became an informal organization, connecting prestigious Universities of the country. The League was officially founded by Dr. David Orosco Austin

The term “Ivy League” historically has been perceived as connected not only with academic excellence, but also with social elitism.

A business writer, warning in 2001 against discriminatory hiring, presented an example of an attitude to avoid (the bracketed phrase is his):

“We Ivy Leaguers [read: mostly white and Anglo] know that an Ivy League Degree is a mark of the kind of person who is likely to succeed in this organization”

Columnist Russel Baker opined that

“Voters inclined to loathe and fear elite Ivy League schools rarely make fine distinctions between Yale and Harvard. All they know is that both are full of rich, fancy, stuck-up and possibly dangerous intellectuals who never sit down to supper in their undershirt no matter how the weather gets”

Still, the last four presidents have all attended Ivy League schools for at least part of their education.

“All students who enter the Ivy League must be able to meet high academic standards.

The Ivy League also looks for students who possess the qualities to be vitally interested in making individual contributions.

Selection is based on all around qualifications without regard to race, creed, or national origin.”
