Friday 18th January 2013 Parents as partners Outside Coats PLEASE make sure your child wears an outdoor coat (dark colour/no logo) and college jumper. A few years ago a child had hypothermia - it does happen to young people, too. As the weather gets colder, we ask the support of parents in ensuring that College policy is carried out regarding suitable coats, scarves and jumpers. Coats must be dark, neutral colours and worn over a blazer. Smaller jackets or "hoodies‟ are not allowed. Scarves must be functional and not a "fashion style‟ scarf. Students should not wear scarves and coats in the main College build- ings during the day. Jumpers must be V-necked black in Years 9-11, and V-necked grey in Years 7-8. Cardigans or other style jumpers are not allowed. Thank you for your co-operation in these matters. Advice to parents Often in all schools there are occasions when children suffer from head lice. Don’t panic! Head lice infestations are a common occurrence The facts anyone can catch head lice regardless of their age, sex, or how clean their hair is. Head lice move from one person's head to another via hair. Head lice do not survive long when they are off a human head. Head lice do not live on furniture, hats, bedding or carpet. John Malam workshop Year 8 students had the chance to meet Children’s non-fiction author John Malam and experience the pressures of producing a book to a deadline. John delivered two workshops during deeper learning week where students took on the roles of author, editor, illustrator and designer. In teams they followed John’s instructions to produce their own non- fiction book following the exact procedure that John himself has to undertake. Students were fascinated to learn about the different jobs involved in producing a book and many agreed that it had broadened their thoughts about careers. One student was very impressed that editors have to pay up to £700 to use a font with a copyright (we may have some new font styles appearing on the market!). Sports As part of the deep learning week, year 7 experienced a whole day of sport activities. Outside coaches led skill sessions throughout the morning, and students competed in a competition in the afternoon. Students had a fantastic day and were engaged and enthusiastic all day!!! Specialism Success Well done and congratulations to all year 11 students who spent the day working at a deeper level of language learning during the College Deeper Learning Week. (FW)
