Guardian Title Company is under new ownership!Guardian Title Company has been a part of Wise County since 1974 and provides title closing services for Realtors, Lenders, Builders, Attorneys and the Public. For years, the company called the downtown Decatur area home and after a short stint in another location have moved back to their previous location at 200 S. They have two daughters, Lauren 16 and Nikki 13. Both play volleyball, basketball and softball for the Bridgeport Sissies and Lauren is also in the Bridgeport Band. WE’VE GOT THAT EAGLE SPIRIT — There was no lack of school spirit in the stands Friday night as dozens of students were dressed up and
painted for the Eagles’ home opener against Liberty Christian. From left, Kaysi Staton, Taylor Krieger and Chelsea Lunt were loud and proud
for Decatur. The Eagles came up short in the game as they lost a 37-34 decision to the private school.

Dear Neil: Is MSMA the best thing to use to kill a grassy weed in my bermuda lawn? A lawn-care company used it, but it seemed to do more damage to my lawn than to the weed.
MSMA is very effi cient in killing existing grasses within bermudagrass turf. Applied at the recommended rates, and sprayed in June or July, when the bermuda has taken on its dark green summer appearance, the worst it should do is to yel-low the bermuda until the next mowing. Tank sprayers apply the herbicide more uniformly and use less of the active ingredient. Hope-fully that’s what they used. It does work on all types of invading grasses. It can even be used to kill invading St. Augustine.
Dear Neil: Isn’t it bad to mow your yard while the grass is wet? Some of my neighbors mow early in the morning while there is still moisture on the blades.
You are correct. That risks spreading diseases, and it also makes it more diffi cult to get good distribution of the cut blades.
Dear Neil: We have a
large crape myrtle (10 years or so). It was very healthy last spring, and it bloomed in early summer. Now, the top half of the plant has all turned brown. What would have caused that? We kept it watered during the summer. What can we do to save it?
I have been around crape myrtles for all of my life, and I have never seen one operate that way. If the die-back goes to a set spot and is not progressing farther down the plant, look at that spot for some evidence of mechanical injury, decay or some other recognizable problem. If that doesn’t shed any light on it, take pho-tos and samples to a Texas Master Certifi ed Nursery professional. There is some other symptom that we’re missing.
Dear Neil: I’m confused
on pre-emergent weedkillers. Will they work on grassburs? Why haven’t they helped with johnsongrass? I have a
bermudagrass lawn.Pre-emergent weedkillers
attack seeds as they try to germinate. Once a plant is growing, they won’t be effec-tive. You’re not getting con-trol with the johnsongrass because it’s a perennial weed that comes back from its vigorous root systems. As mentioned earlier, MSMA sprayed in early summer will eliminate it. On the oth-er hand, pre-emergents are very effective for grassburs. Apply Betasan, Balan, Team or Dimensions granules a week or two before the aver-age date of your last killing freeze. Repeat that applica-tion 90 days later for sea-son-long control.
Dear Neil: I am famil-iar with oak wilt, and that’s not what I’m seeing on my live oak. However, I do see others in the neighborhood that also have yellow-green leaves just like my trees. What causes that, and what can I do to stop it? They look like iron chlorosis.
You need to have a certi-fi ed arborist look at your tree. Live oaks are perfect-ly adapted to soils in all of Texas, acidic and alkaline areas alike. You should never see iron defi ciency un-less there is an extenuating circumstance such as a gas leak, weedkiller damage or trunk or root injury. Some-one needs to see your trees on-site.
Dear Neil: I am grow-ing a couple of types of cit-rus trees in pots (orange and Satsuma). The Satsuma has a scaly condition that covers each fruit and causes them to drop off. The oranges are being devoured by some type of insect. Any advice will be appreciated.
It sounds like the Sat-suma probably has citrus blackfl ies. They are related to whitefl ies and operate the same way except for their body color. They suck sap from the plant, then excrete the excess. Sooty mold grows in the honeydew substrate. Control for both blackfl y and the feeding insects will depend on your maintain-ing a regular spray program
with a labeled insecticide. Dear Neil: Is there any
way to keep squirrels out of pecan trees? We have a young tree, and they’re tak-ing all the pecans.
There are several things you can do, but it may be diffi cult to eliminate them completely. You can put sheet metal collars around their trunks in late summer and leave them in place all fall. The squirrels won’t be able to gain traction to climb over them. However, if your pecan touches other trees, power lines or the roofl ine, the squirrels will fi nd the detour. Humane traps also work, but they require pa-tience.
Dear Neil: Why wouldGold Star esperanza bloom, while the one right beside itdoes not?
The worst thing you cando as a gardener is to com-pare plants. Just like tryingto fi gure out why childrenbehave differently, it willdrive you nuts. Esperanzasrequire full sun to bloomwell. They also need to begrowing actively, so be sureit has adequate root room, nutrition and moisture.

Wise County Extension Education Clubs were repre-sented at the annual (Texas Extension Education Asso-ciation) State Convention in Corpus Christi Sept. 9-10 by Patti Mahaffey of the Oak Grove Extension Education Club and Marilynn Collins of the Greenwood Extension Education Club.
During the two day conven-tion, which was cut short by hurricane evacuation efforts, state delegates heard Heloise and gained information on educational programs that will be used in their local Ex-tension Education clubs dur-ing the next year.
At the recent Wise County 4-H Awards Banquet, TEEA members received the Wise County ‘Friend of 4-H’ award. The group was cited for their dedication and charitable support of the Wise County 4-H program. For many years this group has aimed to help Wise County 4-H’ers reach
their full potential through educational pursuits by set-ting aside money to support 4-H’ers who compete in dis-trict and state level compe-tition. They also contribute scholarship funds annually to a graduating senior who will be pursuing a college degree.
This group also collects coins for friendship at each of their club meetings which are then donated to the Texas 4-H Conference Center in Brown-wood where Wise County
4-H’ers attend leadership camps. Many members of this group are always willing to assist with judging various

For beef producers, going green isn’t a political or so-cial statement; it’s a way of life and has been for many genera-tions.
With growing concerns regarding our environment and the cultural popularity of going green, often times the beef industry unfairly becomes the target of blame in contributing to the demise of our environment. Good manage-ment of natural resources on farms and ranches across the country isn’t a choice; producers know that pro-tecting the environment now protects the business for future generations.
The Beef Checkoff Pro-gram is working to provide not only media, but beef producers, the information needed to combat negative reports regarding beef pro-duction and its direct effect on our environment. Includ-ed below are facts to help
beef producers speak with one voice when communi-cating about their commit-ment to protecting the envi-ronment.
For America’s beef pro-ducers, the land is their livelihood and their legacy. They carefully fol-low science-based best management practices to protect our country’s natu-ral resources for fu-ture generations. In fact, beef producers have led conserva-tion efforts proving that raising cattle
and environmental steward-ship go hand-in-hand.■ In the United States, 98
percent of farms are family farms.■ Today’s American farm-
er feeds about 144 people worldwide.■ According to the Envi-
ronmental Protection Agen-cy (EPA), the entire U.S. agricultural sector accounts for only 6.4 percent of total U.S. greenhouse gas emis-sions, and livestock produc-tion is only a portion of that total.
■ Greenhouse gas emis-sions from agriculture de-creased 4.2 percent from 2001 to 2006.■ From 1990 to 2005,
overall methane emissions decreased 11.5 percent.■ Most large feedlot own-
ers have a dedicated envi-ronmental engineer either on staff or on contract who ensures the operation is in compliance with strict gov-ernment regulations.■ Cattle serve a valuable
role in the ecosystem by con-verting the forages humans cannot consume into a nu-trient-dense food.■ Today versus 1960: 1.8
million less farms are feed-ing a U.S. population that has increased 61 percent.■ Grazing cattle reduces
the risk of wildfi res by de-creasing the amount of fl am-mable material on the land.■ Because 85 percent of
U.S. grazing lands are un-suitable for producing crops, grazing animals more than doubles the area that can be used to produce food.■ Rangelands and pas-
tures provide forage and habitat for numerous wild-life species, including 20
million deer, 500,000 prong-horn antelope, 400,000 elk and 55,000 feral horses and burros.■ Last year, more than
2,000 ranchers and farm-ers entered into landowner agreements with the Part-ners for Fish and Wildlife Program.■ About a billion acres, or
55 percent of the total land surface in the United States, is rangeland, pasture and forages.■ EPAs Clean Water Act
sets forth requirements for protecting our nations water resources. Animal manures are a valuable fertilizer and soil conditioner.■ Beef producers consid-
er the rate of growth and consumption of plants in a given area when deciding how to rotate cattle to new pastures.■ The United States has
16 million more acres of for-estland than it did in 1920.

Devon Energy Corpora-tion has received regulatory approval for the company’s second oil sands project in Canada. The project, called Jackfi sh 2, will be fully op-erational in 2012.
Devon expects the well to produce about 35,000 bar-rels of oil per day through a recovery method known as Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage. Over the life of the project, Devon expects to recover about 300 million barrels of oil.
Devon President John Richels called Devon’s oil sands operation a key as-set in the company’s North American portfolio. The project is in northeastern Alberta, Canada.

The Grandeur Design gals have done it again.
Susan Semmelman and Brenda Blaylock, owners of Grandeur Design on the square in Decatur, teamed with Grand Home Design and Glendarroch Homes to create a home on the 19th Annual Kaleidoscope of Homes in Fort Worth that sold soon after the home tour opened Aug. 30.
The 7,259-square foot es-tate, Chateau L’Ecosse, was priced at $2,199,000. It sold complete with furnishings. Grandeur Design was also involved with a Kaleido-scope home last year that sold during the tour, with all
furnishings.“It is truly a French cha-
teau,” said Semmelman of this year’s entry. “It has the most amazing detail and we were involved in the archi-tectural design, including ceiling treatments, all the tile, countertop selection, lighting and faux fi nishing.”
Semmelman pointed out the faux fi nishing was done by another local company, Classic Wall Design.
She and Blaylock shopped specifi cally for the chateau and their fi rm made many of the custom furnishings.
“We used antiques and high-end reproductions and went all over looking for
pieces specifi cally for that estate,” she said.
Grandeur Design hand-crafted the dining room chairs, other chairs and ot-tomans and fashioned all the draperies and bedding.
“We made tapestry pillows and cut up an oriental rug to make a bench,” Semmelman added.
Semmelman and Blay-lock founded Grandeur Design in 2001. They ex-panded the business from
1,800 square feet on FM 51 in Decatur to 17,000 square feet on the Decatur square, with a workroom in the old Christian building behind the square showroom. They have a staff of upholsterers, seamstresses, wood carvers and iron workers.
Semmelman said their work only looks expensive, that they can “take any bud-get and make it amazing.”
“Our motto is, ‘It’s not about the right place at
the right time but the right space for the right dime,’” added Semmelman.
The Kaleidoscope tour is sponsored by the Greater Fort Worth Builders Asso-ciation and benefi ts Cook Children’s Medical Center. The tour runs through Sept. 21, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the gated community of Mont-serrat West Fort Worth Es-tates. Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for children (4-12). Discount tickets are
available at all Tom Thumbstores.

James and Shirley Wood are determined that no cus-tomer will leave their 30th anniversary celebration hungry this Saturday.
In recognition of their third decade as General Mo-tors dealers in Decatur, the couple is hosting a tradition-al Texas barbecue, served by James Wood Motors employ-ees and volunteers. Wood veteran Dalton Montgomery is in charge of the cooking.
The meal will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the service drive.
There will be a short rec-ognition program at 11:30 a.m. Country-and-Western entertainer Pat Waters will perform during the meal, said James Wood’s executive manager, Carey Williams, another dealership veteran.
Wood marketing director Susan Miller said a prize
drawing will conducted ev-ery 30 minutes through the day. There will be hayride tours of the dealership, a bounce house and face paint-ing for kids and a classic car show for everyone.
On the business side, this will be the next-to-last weekend for General Motors’ highly successful “Employee Discount for Everyone” pro-motion.
The dealership’s used-car department is conducting a construction sale. The deal-ership has been shifting its operations as it prepares for the opening of a Hyun-dai new-car dealership later this year. That project has included a new make-ready building that dominates the hill behind the dealership.
Barbecues have been a dealership tradition. In 2003, the dealership fed its
customers in recognition of 25 years as one of Texas’ biggest new-car and truck retailers.
For James Wood, perhaps the key word in that sen-tence is “truck.” When the veteran used-car dealer and his wife bought John Por-ter Motors on Labor Day in 1978, the dealership sold as many Buicks and Pontiacs as it did GMC Trucks.
That soon would change, as Wood pioneered selling trucks and Suburbans to the Dallas-Fort Worth Me-troplex.
By 1983, the dealer had outgrown its original site, and the Woods moved down US 287 to a brand-new fa-cility on 20 acres of roll-ing hillside, a location that really showcased the GM dealership’s ever-expanding inventory.
Wood’s strategy includ-ed accepting the risk that would come with building a large inventory of both cars and trucks.
“You’ve got to have the goods to sell them,” James Wood recalled in the year-book that was published as part of the dealership’s 15th anniversary celebration in 1993. “In this day and age, people want to buy some-thing they can see.”
That same yearbook chronicled James Wood Mo-tors’ selling of more GMCs than any other dealership in the United States in both 1988 and 1989.
Lower GMC sales for the next three years refl ected a major addition: Chevro-let. In 1990, the dealership doubled its showroom, as well as doubling the parts department and expanding
the shop to 40 service bays. At the grand opening, U.S.
Sen. Phil Gramm was the keynote speaker.
The next major expansion came in Denton in 1991, when the Woods’ purchased a closed Buick-GMC dealer-ship. They soon added Pon-tiac to their lineup.
In 1994, they moved up Interstate 35 with the pur-chase of the North Texas Autoplex, which sold Chev-
rolet and Cadillac. Manyof the Denton dealership’semployees started out withWood in Decatur.
The Denton dealershipwill also host a barbecue.
Going back to its roots,James Wood Motors hasexpanded its used-car op-eration with lots in Azle,Bridgeport, Denton, Lew-isville, Springtown andWatauga.
PREVENTION OF PEDICULOSIS
Pediculosis, the infestation of head lice, is a health problem affecting at least 6 million school children annually in this country, and it is more prevalent than all other childhood communicable diseases combined. Parents should understand the communicability of head lice, how to make an accurate identifi cation, and how to remove head lice and nits (eggs) from a child in the safest and most effective ways. An educated screener can easily detect head lice. Traditional treatment involves the direct application of chemicals to the scalp of infested individuals. The National Pediculosis Association recommends regular screenings to control lice outbreaks in school settings. Screening is utilized as a prevention strategy to facilitate early detection and minimize exposure to potentially toxic chemicals.

As nauseating (literally) as it is to the pregnant women who experience it, morning sickness may actually serve a useful purpose, according to researchers delving into the matter. They reason that, if morning sickness is simply a byproduct of a healthy pregnancy, all women would have it. Yet, while two-thirds of pregnant women do experience morning sickness, the rest often carry their pregnancies to term without experiencing nausea. In addition, morning sickness seems to arise as a consequence of seeing, smelling, or tasting meats and strong-tasting vegetables, which traditionally have been likely to contain food-borne microbes or birth-defect-inducing chemicals. Smoking is another trigger. This leads researchers to believe that morning sickness protects mothers
and embryos from harmful substances.
At WISE OBSTETRICS & GYNECOLOGY P.A., our goal is to provide the highest quality obstetrical and gynecological services to women throughout our community. We believe in compassionate and personalized care and are proud to be a source of health and well being to our patients at all stages of their lives. To learn more about our practice and to schedule an appointment, call 940-626-8008. Our offi ce is conveniently located at 1713 South FM 51, Ste. 201, Decatur. New
patients are welcome.
Among women who experience morning sickness, symptoms peak exactly when embryonic-organ development is most susceptible to chemical disruption, between week six and week eighteen of pregnancy.

Dear Savvy Senior,My mom and dad could
sure use some help keeping up with all their medications. Between the two of them, they take 11 prescription drugs and that doesn’t include all the vitamins or over-the-coun-ter medicines they take. Their kitchen counter literally looks like a pharmacy. What can you recommend that can help them keep up with their med-icine?
Pill Tracking PattyDear Patty,Anybody who juggles mul-
tiple medications can relate to the problem of forgetting to take a medication, or not remembering whether they already took it. Here are some solutions that can help.
Medication helpersGetting organized and be-
ing reminded! This is the magic combination that can help your parents stay on top of their medication regi-mens. And with all the self-help products and tools that are available today, it’s easy to do.
Today, there are a bevy of inexpensive pill organiz-ers and medication remind-
ers on the market that are incredibly helpful, and the best place to fi nd them is at www.epill.com (or call 800-549-0095). This is the grand-daddy of medication helpers that offer dozens of different pill boxes, vibrating watches, beeping pill bottles and pag-ers, and even dispensers that talk to you. Forgettingth-epill.com is another good re-source to check. And for some unique medication manage-ment products, consider the following: ■ Talking pillbox: For $70,
MedCenter (www.medcenter-systems.com; 866-600-3244) offers a neat product that organizes a month’s worth of pills and alerts you up to four times a day when your medi-cation is due. ■ Smart pillboxes: These
are small, fi t-in-your-hand, high-tech, portable devices that chime or beep when it’s time to take your medication; let you know which medi-cine to take at that particu-lar time; how to take it; and will remind you if you missed a dose. They can even be set up to alert a caregiver if de-sired. To learn more see the Med-eMonitor (www.infor-medix.com; 888-582-4480;
$30/month rental fee) and MedSignals (www.medsig-nals.com; 866-965-9200; $200 purchase price).
Prepackaged medsAnother way you can sim-
plify your parent’s medicine consumption is by prepack-aging their individual doses, and there are various ways to do it. One is with Dai-lyMed (www.dailymedrx.com; 800-973-1955), a phar-macy dispensing service that provides, sorts and organizes prescription drugs, vitamins and over-the-counter medica-tions into individual, single-dose packets that are labeled in large print with the day and time they need to be tak-en. The cost for DailyMed is $15 per month, not including medication costs. Or if you want to do it yourself there’s Dose Guardian ($200; www.doseguardian.com; 804-726-5448), an easy-to-use home device that lets you do the or-ganizing and packaging right at your own kitchen table.
If your parents are in need of comprehensive medication assistance, consider EMMA ($10/day rental; www.in-rangesystems.com; 814-940-1870), MD2 ($745; www.epill.com/md2.html; 800-549-
0095) or CompuMed ($900 or $100/month rental; www.compumed.com; 800-722-4417). These are sophisti-cated, home-based machines that will not only remind your parents when it’s time to take their medication, it also dispenses exactly what they need to take and will report to a caregiver if they miss a dose.
Reminding servicesIf forgetfulness is the main
problem, there are electronic services available today like OnTimeRx where you can have your parents called, e-mailed or paged for all types of reminders - daily medica-tions, monthly refi lls, doctor and dentist appointments, or other events, for $10 to $30 a month (407-843-8966; www.ontimerx.com). CareCalls (www.parentcarecall.com; 888-275-3098) is another ser-vice that offers medication reminders, wake up calls and more over the phone, along with caregiver alerts if your loved one doesn’t answer within three tries.

WISE NOTES FOR CONSUMERS
DAVIS
By ADRIAN ARREDONDO
Wise Co. Extension Agent
Don’t let cold weather keep you from exercising stalled horses. Aside from the obvious benefi t of keep-ing their mental attitude in good shape, there are many reasons that routine exercise is important to the physical health of your horse. Muscle tone, tendon and ligament fl exibility, respiratory sys-tem function and the health of the cardiovascular system benefi t from daily forced ex-ercise and turnout of stalled horses.
Recently conducted re-search adds another di-mension to the need to ex-ercise stalled horses: bone strength. Here are a few
bulleted statements that summarize fi ndings of sev-eral recently published re-search trials.■ Weanlings that
were stalled with-out exercise had a decreased bone mass as compared with weanlings that were pastured. The same trial found that stalled weanlings given 12 hour turnouts had similar bone miner-al content as weanlings that were pastured.■ Weanlings housed in
small pens (dry-lots) given forced exercise increased bone size as compared to non-exercised weanlings that were housed similarly.
■ Exercising weanlings on a walker increased can-non bone diameter and the
density of bone.■ Lounging
stalled weanlings helped to maintain bone mineral con-tent more so than four-hour turnouts of voluntary exer-cise.■ Pastured year-
lings had increased bone mineral con-tent as compared
to dry-lotted yearlings.■ Yearlings confi ned to
stalls had decreased bone mineral content as com-pared to pasture yearlings.■ Mature horses exercised
on a treadmill had larger cross-sectional tendon area
as compared to similarly housed horses that were given four-hour turnouts with voluntary exercise.■ Three to four months of
confi nement reduced bone mineral content in horses. Subsequent daily exercise reversed this condition and increased the bone mineral content.
The general conclusion from all these trials is that some type of forced exer-cise is benefi cial for healthy bone of stalled growing horses that are not allowed extended periods of turnout in pastures. So, don’t let the cold weather keep you from exercising your horses, es-pecially growing horses that are stalled.

Trin-ity Street in Decatur. “We feel like we belong downtown and have come home” said Shanna.
The move came with new owners, with familiar faces. Jerrod Mowery and his wife, Shanna Mowery have teamed up with Phil Adams as the new owners. Shanna has been an employee of Guardian Title for over 11 years and Jerrod is the Texas Sales Manager for Complete Production Services and has worked in the oil and gas industry for 15 years. They have two daughters, Lauren 16 and Nikki 13. Both play volleyball, basketball and softball for the Bridgeport Sissies and Lauren is also in the Bridgeport Band. Shanna is the daughter of Bill Parker and Sherry Parker – Lemon, County Clerk. Jerrod is the son of the late Joe Lynn Mowery and Darla Bowyer. Phil Adams has been in the title industry for many years and has owned several title compa-nies. He currently owns Chapin Title Company in Sherman and W.W. Howeth Title Company in Gainesville.
All of the employees at Guardian Title Company have been a part of the company for years and have come to call themselves a family rather than co-workers. Family is an important word at Guardian Title. We feel we are all part of one large family and we treat our customers like we would our own family. We know we are helping with possibly one of the largest investments of their lives and want them to feel comfortable and secure in the decisions that they have made.
Shanna said, “ I have always loved being a part of Guardian Title and the close-knit family ties that it keeps. We are looking forward to growing with the community as it grows.”
We have a knowledgeable and experienced staff that consists of:Shanna Mowery: Owner/President, over 11 years at Guardian Title with 15 years experienceSherilyn Price: Escrow Offi cer/Abstractor, 12 years at Guardian Title with 24 years experienceCandi Arrington: Abstractor/Marketing, 3 years at Guardian Title with 8 years experienceMelissa Read: Offi ce Coordinator, 6 years at Guardian TitleSheree Gibbs: Plant Maintenance, 7 years at Guardian TitleEva Read: Personnel/Accounting, 11 years at Guardian Title
