For teenage girls, the pressures of adhering to what today’s culture fi nds beautiful, sexy or ap-pealing can often lead to drastic consequences.

According to the National Eating Disorder In-formation Center, eating disorders are the third-most common chronic illness in adolescent girls.

More than 50 percent of young females begin dieting before age 14, and 76 percent of women between the ages of 24 and 56 who diet do so for cosmetic rather than health reasons.

Thursday, representatives with Wiginton, Hooker Jeffry Architects presented county commissioners with a preliminary site plan for a new court-house as part of the county’s “master facilities study plan – to 2030.”

Charlie Kearns and Jim Wiginton showed commissioners the basic layout for a three-story 130 000-square-foot

building with a basement on a 20-acre site. The footprint was created after consulting with county employees for more than a year on space needed for each department.

Wise County Sheriff ’s investiga-tors have ruled the Thursday evening shooting and death of a 19-year-old Wise County resident at a home on Kincannon Lane in the east part of the county an accident, pending the results of toxicology tests.

Cameron White, 19, was pronounced dead shortly after 6 p.m. Thursday at Wise Regional Health System in Deca-tur after he was shot in the chest with

a .22 rifl e. Sheriff ’s Investigator Jerry DeMoss

said White was attempting to hand the gun to a friend, Ernest Hammond, 19, who accidentally hit the trigger in-stead of the safety, causing the gun to discharge.

Authorities said White and some friends had been shooting the rifl e at a stock tank before the injury.

DeMoss said no charges will be fi led against Hammond because the inci-dent was accidental.

Dear Neil: Butterfl ies have been around my live oak tree, and now I have little tan-to-red, berry-like galls on the bottoms of the oak leaves. Do the butter-fl ies cause the galls? Should I worry about them?

If you’re talking about B-B- to pea-sized, fuzzy balls on the bottoms of the leaves, those are wooly oak galls, and they’re extremely common. A good entomolo-gist could give you a more defi nitive answer, but gall wasps cause that particu-lar gall (and most others). There are many species of wasps, and hundreds of types of galls that attack oaks alone. They are of no serious threat, and there isn’t anything you can do about them anyway.

Dear Neil: What can

you tell me about the vine you can see in the photos? It was here in a protected place when we moved here, and the former owners didn’t know what it is.

I normally don’t do plant IDs here, since they only help the one person, but this is one of the prettiest vines we grow. It’s called air potato, and botanically, it’s Dioscorea bulbifera. Its huge leaves are promi-nently veined, and its stems become covered with potato-like tubers. It does well in moist, partially

shaded locations. It dies to the ground over the winter, and where minimum win-ter temperatures aren’t too cold, it will come back the following spring. It is not edible, and it is invasive in warmer parts of the South. Some areas even ban its use and sale.

Dear Neil: The leaves you

can see are from my angel trumpet tree. I protected it over the winter. When I put it back out this spring, this happened to them. What is attacking it?

The mail was unkind to your samples. First guess, when problems happen soon after putting plants outside in the spring, they have often suffered sun-scald. That could be the case for these leaves that had become acclimated to protected conditions, even for the newest leaves that developed soon thereafter. It does appear something has skeletonized portions of the leaves, but you’d have to catch the culprit at work to know what type of pest, if any, was involved. If the problem persists, con-sider one of the systemic insecticides now being sold for landscape plants.

Dear Neil: I have two

Shumard red oaks planted at the same time. One is do-ing well, but the other is unhappy. I took samples to the nursery, and they said it was suffering iron defi -ciency cholorsis, and that it has a fungus. I’ve invested a lot in the tree, also in fer-tilizers, fungicides, even a trombone sprayer. Can you tell me, from the several leaves, what the problem might be?

I get very nervous trying

to answer Shumard red oak questions. I’ve grown them for 40 years, so it’s not be-cause I’m unfamiliar. It’s just that there are some other very similar oaks, pin oaks (Quercus palustris), in particular, that are not nearly so well adapted to big areas of Texas. The leaf samples you sent do not seem to have the deep lob-ing of normal Shumard red oak leaves. The other types, perhaps including yours, are likely to show iron defi -ciency anytime soils are al-kaline, and it usually takes fi ve to 10 years before it really becomes severe. On the other hand, all oaks in this group, Shumard most especially, have very smooth bark when they’re young. That bark gives lit-tle protection to sunscald while the trees are small, and trunk damage is com-mon unless the trunks are protected with paper tree wrap from the day they are planted and through the fi rst 12 to 24 months. If you see signs of cracks or bor-er holes in the trunk, sun damage may have been the culprit. Unfortunately, I can’t get much closer with-out being on-site to see the tree. Consider consulting an arborist.

Dear Neil: What can I do to get rid of live oak suckers that are coming up by the hundreds beneath my tree?

That’s a fault of probably 10 or 15 percent of our live oaks. They vary geneti-cally, and those sprouts are tethered to “mama,” so you can’t use a weedkiller on them. Your best bet is to use a sharpshooter spade and angle your cut so that you remove the sprout and as much of its small trunk as you can. You might con-sider laying a solid vinyl root barrier such as pond liner down over the area after you have removed them, then putting some type of decorative river rock or other heavy mulch to conceal it. Try it on a small area to see how well it works for you. Short of replacing the tree, there just isn’t much more you can do.

Wise County left its mark on the 11th National Wa-tershed Conference May 17-20 in Wichita, Kan.

A Partner in Excellence Award was presented to the Texas Association of Water-shed Sponsors for revital-izing the Texas Watershed Program partnership. Jim Paschall of Cottondale and Lou Vee Bridges of Paradise represented the associa-tion, along with chairman Dale Mengers. Pashcall is vice chairman of the as-sociation and Bridges is a member.

“These folks have worked with the Texas State NRCS offi ce, the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board, TCEQ, the Texas county commissioners and judges group as well as many others to recreate a working partnership for the watershed program in Texas,” said Dan Sebert, executive director for the National Watershed Co-alition, in presenting the award. “They continue to work with watershed sponsors on operation and maintenance, as well as dam safety issues. They are participating in an effort to educate the Texas State Legislature concerning the benefi ts of the program and the needs of local sponsors in Texas.”

Bridges was also singled out for her outstanding con-tributions to the National Watershed Coalition over many years. She was pre-sented with a plaque and was re-elected secretary of the NWC. Locally, she serves as president of the Wise County Water Control

and Improvement District and is also a member of the board of the Chisholm Trail Resource Conservation and Development council that serves Wise County.

Tom Goode, Wise County Public Works director, and Precinct 2 county commis-sioner Kevin Burns con-

ducted breakout sessions for the 180 conference at-tendees. Also representing Wise County were James McGilvray, secretary of the Wise County WCID, and Darnell Willis, district con-servationist with the Natu-ral Resources Conservation Service.

An abundance of home grown fruits and vegetables often triggers the desire to can foods at home. While this can be a fun and rewarding way to keep foods long after the season ends, care must be taken to assure that foods canned at home are safe to eat.

Following research-based methods and using tested recipes are things to consider when canning foods at home. Not all recipes for home canning have been test-ed for safety. Sources of tested recipes include the Na-tional Center for Home Food Preservation (http://www.uga.edu/nchfp/), the U.S. Department of Agriculture and manufacturers of home canning equipment and supplies. Recipes from cookbooks, out-dated Extension publications and the Internet should not be used.

Using the right equipment when canning is also im-portant. Some foods can be preserved using a water bath canner, but others must be processed in a pres-sure canner. If the right canning method is not used, then the fi nished product could make people very sick. Also, make sure that the equipment you have is in good working order. Experts advise that dial gauges on pressure canners be tested annually to make sure they are accurate. In addition, canners should be checked to make sure they are in good working order.

There are many other aspects to canning that one needs to consider, including jar size, headspace and recommended processing (canning) times. All of these can infl uence the safety of the fi nal product. The last thing that we want to do is tell someone that the food they have just spent hours canning has to be thrown away or redone. I recently got back from an 11-day trip across Texas. I was searching for the titmice that I am studying, but I saw a lot of other neat birds and landscapes along the way.

I started out in our area but then drove southwest to the Fort Worth Nature Center. Because the nature center has a lot of big trees around the river, I heard and saw Indigo Buntings sing-ing. We have them in Wise County, too. I also saw post-ed warning signs for alliga-tors that have been seen in Lake Worth. I thought that was funny but jumped a bit whenever a turtle slid into the water.

As I walked along the trail, a small dark bird fl ew up into sight from the under-growth. I was very surprised to see that it was a Mourn-ing Warbler. It is a migrant in this area but usually skulks out of sight, and I had never seen one before. It was an adult male, with a yellow belly, gray head with dark blackish bib, and greenish back. The beak and feet were peach-colored. It was a gor-geous bird.

After fi nding some titmice along the Cross Timbers Trail, I began walking back. Along the river I heard the loud ringing song of a Protho-notary Warbler but couldn’t see the bird. Then I saw a log fl oating near the river bank, which dropped down about 20 to 30 feet below the path. Then I realized the log had eyes. It was an alligator, and a big one at that, probably 6 to 8 feet long. I pulled out my camera and took some pic-tures as I hurried by. It is an interesting feeling when you realize that we humans are not always the biggest crea-

tures out here.After my alligator surprise,

I ate lunch and drove onward to Lake Mineral Wells State Park. It was a beautiful rocky park with small oaks cover-ing the hillside down to the lake. I saw a titmouse there and got a sound recording, as I had hoped for, and then continued walking in search of more. I didn’t see many more birds, but I saw several Texan Crescents, a beautiful small butterfl y that is much more uncommon in Wise County than in these more western, dry habitats. The butterfl y is dark chestnut and black with bold, white spots. After an hour or so I drove on to Possum King-dom Lake State Park where I spent the night.

At Possum Kingdom Lake I saw a delightful variety of birds. I sat on a huge slab of rock by the lake and saw sev-

eral Turkey Vultures fl ying over. They were low enough that I could see their bright red heads without binocu-lars. Several of them were molting so their wings looked ragged. I also saw a pair of titmice foraging, with the male occasionally singing, in the dead tree and cedar by the water’s edge. As the evening progressed, I heard a Summer Tanager singing. The next morning I explored the lake edge and saw a Red Satyr in the grass. This but-terfl y is brown with a red-dish tint on the forewing. It is rather uncommon in Wise County; I have only seen them in a few places on the grasslands. However, I saw quite a few over the next few days in the area south and west of Fort Worth.

After Possum Kingdom Lake, I headed south to a park at Ringling Lake in

Eastland County. The red dirt was covered with oaks, and I found one more pair of titmice. I saw a six-lined racerunner lizard dart along the edge of the path as I was walking back to my car and two Mississippi Kites soared overhead.

Next I stopped in Dub-lin, at the city park, and walked along a wooded edge. It should have been good titmouse habitat, as a fam-ily of chickadees was feed-ing its hungry fl edglings. I think it was too late in the day and too hot and windy to see many birds. Often high winds make it diffi cult to fi nd a lot of birds. I did get to watch a Scissor-tailed Fly-catcher foraging from a tree. It made crackling noises as it swooped over the grass try-ing to catch insects.

My fi nal stop of the day, where I camped for the night, was Dinosaur Valley State Park near Glen Rose. The high wind was still keeping the birds down. I heard one or two titmice, but every time I walked toward them, they stopped singing. I even saw one for a brief instant, but not long enough for a good view. I walked along the river and saw the dino-saur tracks and heard some Northern Cricket Frogs calling. Up along the river bank, a group of three juve-nile Eastern Phoebes sat in the trees. They fl ew ahead of me as I walked on the path. Then it started getting dark, and it was time for me to set-tle in for the night. I heard a Chuck-will’s-widow calling as I went to sleep. I really hoped that I would fi nd more birds the next morning.

External parasites cost cattle producers millions of dollars each year in lost revenue due to the constant irritation they cause to beef cattle. Cattle will use a great deal of energy in an at-tempt to get relief from the constant pestering.

Two of the more common problems this time of year are the horn fl y and heel fl y. Horn fl ies will take up to 30 blood meals each day causing nervousness, annoyance and weight loss since they interfere with the feeding and resting routine of a cow. Treatment is said to be justifi ed when popu-lations reach 250 fl ies per head. Control can be applied as self treatment insecti-cides or you can use sprays, pour-ons, dusts, feed addi-tives or boluses.

Cattle grubs are the larvae

stage of the heel fl y, which lay eggs on the hairs of the lower legs of cattle in the spring. Grubs appear in the backs of cattle in the win-ter. Their migrating damage

causes weight loss and reduces milk production.

To control grubs, administer sys-temic insecti-cides like IVO-MEC, EPRINEX, DECTOMAX or CYDECTIN at least three months before grubs ap-pear in the back.

It is best to use pour-on, spot-on, spray or injection type products to kill the mi-grating grubs before they reach the esophagus. If used too late, these products can cause reactions in the esoph-agus if grubs are present.

Face fl ies can also cause problems for cattlemen by spreading pink eye. They can be controlled with the same products you use for horn fl ies.

Cattle insecticide ear tags

can also be an effective, but fairly expensive, method of controlling fl ies. If you choose this alternative, be sure to follow the directions on the label. Most brands call for two tags per animal and suggest that tags be removed after a specifi ed length of time to prevent fl y resistance to the product. Early reports this year in-dicate that some brands of tags have not done a great job of controlling horn fl ies.

Most fl y control products have no withdrawal time, so be sure to read and follow the label directions.

Fly control is important to the health and performance of cattle. Some control meth-ods may seem expensive, but it is a practice that will more than pay for itself.

What would make an outstanding scholar, band member, and athlete who played just about every sport but football for his high school want to walk on at a Division I university and think he had a chance to make the football team?

For Brian Carpenter of Bridgeport, now a success-ful Wise County podiatrist, it was all about the chal-lenge. Challenges have defi ned his life. They have made him stronger, made him appreciate the dawn-ing of each new day and in the case of football, changed the course of his life.

After graduating from Bridgeport High School in 1985, he headed for Texas A&M University, follow-ing in the footsteps of his dad, Bob, who had been a yell leader there. He joined the Corps and the band and then decided to try out for head coach Jackie Sherrill’s 12th Man kickoff team. Sherrill created the volunteer team as a means to connect the student body with the football team and honor the longstanding 12th Man tradition.

Most of the students who tried out for the team were Friday night heroes from small towns who were not considered good enough to play college ball. They longed to extend their gridiron careers even if it meant serving as tackling dummies for the scholar-ship athletes. All Carpen-ter could see was a chal-lenge and the opportunity to make history.

He was among the select few who made the kickoff team and ended up playing four years for Coach Sher-

rill.“It was an absolutely un-

believable experience,” said Carpenter.

After a stellar academic career at Bridgeport High School, Carpenter planned to become a veterinarian at A&M. When his cleat got caught in the artifi cial turf during football practice, his ankle turned and with it his career. Like his teammates on the kickoff team, he was willing to play with pain rather than risk being cut. He sought out a podiatrist who made a special boot for his ankle. That College Sta-tion doctor talked to him about podiatry and how the profession doesn’t require on-call duties, allowing for family time.

Today, Dr. Brian Car-penter has returned to his hometown. He has recently been named one of the 2009 Top Doctors by Forth Worth, Texas: The City’s Magazie, the fi fth consecutive year that he has been recog-nized with the honor in a vote by his peers through the Tarrant County Medi-cal Society.

Carpenter is in practice at North Central Texas Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine in Decatur and the John Peter Smith Hos-pital Department of Ortho-paedics in Fort Worth.

“Working with the indi-gent (at John Peter Smith) is rewarding, an opportuni-ty to give back,” Carpenter said.

Not only did football play a role in Carpenter’s career choice, but it also intro-duced him to the love of his life, his wife Mollie.

“A fellow football player was married to Mollie’s sis-ter,” Carpenter explained.

Mollie earned a degree in speech pathology from the University of North Texas, and they were mar-ried a year after being in-troduced.

They celebrated eight years of marriage on New

Year’s Eve this year and have three children, Cole, 7, Carson, 5 and Lindie, 1. Mollie is a professional pho-tographer and owns Wise Photography in Bridgeport.

The grit and determina-tion that it took to play for Coach Sherrill served Car-penter well four years ago when he battled cancer. The support he received during that time served to remind him why he wanted to re-turn to his hometown and raise a family.

“It was an amazing out-reach, from the whole coun-ty,” he said. “We got calls and things from people we had never met.”

Carpenter said less than 1 percent of people with his type of cancer survive.

“The guy upstairs took care of me,” he added.

Carpenter believes he has led a blessed life, from the opportunity to live in the Middle East while his dad was in the oil and gas business, to the opportu-nity to serve as chief resi-dent in podiatric surgery at Harvard Medical School/The Cambridge Hospital, to a fellowship in foot and an-kle trauma at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. and now to have a private practice in his home coun-ty while being able to help those less fortunate at a county hospital in Fort Worth.

victory over Notre Dame on his offi ce wall is a reminder of one of the most memora-ble chapters in his life.

“To walk out on Kyle Field with 90,000 people in the stands, it was a surreal ex-perience. To have a chance to play Division I football ... just like today, I was look-ing for a challenge to push me to the limit,” Carpenter said.

His latest challenge was to seek a seat on the Bridge-port School Board and work to return the district to the top rated district academi-cally in the county. He won election to the board last month.

Carpenter says the 12th Man kickoff team was a “kamikaze, suicide, put your head through a wall type thing.”

In the prologue to the book, “No Experience Re-quired,” Sherrill said the kickoff team was the “Aggie connection to the student body.

“I believed in the 12th Man. They never let me down, and I never doubted they would. Individually they may not have belonged on a college football fi eld. But collectively, they would fi ght until there was no one left standing, and no one was ever able to get them all.

“They had a job to do, and no one did it better.”

He could just have easily been talking about Brian Carpenter.

For teenage girls, the pressures of adhering to what today’s culture fi nds beautiful, sexy or ap-pealing can often lead to drastic consequences.

According to the National Eating Disorder In-formation Center, eating disorders are the third-most common chronic illness in adolescent girls.

More than 50 percent of young females begin dieting before age 14, and 76 percent of women between the ages of 24 and 56 who diet do so for cosmetic rather than health reasons.

Thursday, representatives with Wiginton, Hooker Jeffry Architects presented county commissioners with a preliminary site plan for a new court-house as part of the county’s “master facilities study plan – to 2030.”

Charlie Kearns and Jim Wiginton showed commissioners the basic layout for a three-story 130 000-square-foot

building with a basement on a 20-acre site. The footprint was created after consulting with county employees for more than a year on space needed for each department.

Wise County Sheriff ’s investiga-tors have ruled the Thursday evening shooting and death of a 19-year-old Wise County resident at a home on Kincannon Lane in the east part of the county an accident, pending the results of toxicology tests.

Cameron White, 19, was pronounced dead shortly after 6 p.m. Thursday at Wise Regional Health System in Deca-tur after he was shot in the chest with

a .22 rifl e. Sheriff ’s Investigator Jerry DeMoss

said White was attempting to hand the gun to a friend, Ernest Hammond, 19, who accidentally hit the trigger in-stead of the safety, causing the gun to discharge.

Authorities said White and some friends had been shooting the rifl e at a stock tank before the injury.

DeMoss said no charges will be fi led against Hammond because the inci-dent was accidental.
