What is Alcohol?

Alcohol is the term we use for ethanol, the substance suitable for humans to drink. Another form of alcohol is methanol and it is toxic to humans. Alcohol is the result of combining food substances like grapes or barley with sugar and yeast and allowing them to ferment. People around the globe consume alcohol in various forms and within various cultural settings.

Sociological Effects

Although most people abuse alcohol

because it makes them feel better

about themselves, the truth is

that over use of alcohol tends to

negatively impact the abuser’s

personality. Increased

irritability, poor judgment and

reasoning are just a couple of

ways that alcohol damages the

human personality and

relationships with other people.

More Sociological Effects

One study suggested that abuse of alcohol is the cause of as much as 40 percent of instances of domestic violence. Alcoholism also plays a huge role in verbal and physical abuse of the spouse and the children and is the cause for the break up of marriages. Children living in the home with an alcoholic have lower grades, higher rates of depression.

Physiological EffectsWhen consumed, alcohol has effects on cells in the body. It can break down the lipids and proteins that form the walls of cells. Body tissue left in alcohol will dissolve over time. Most of the time the concentration of alcohol in the body is too low to do much damage. Although over time as alcohol continues to be consumed it can have lasting effects on the body.

More Physiological Effects

One of the physiological effects can even lead to sclerosis of the liver which eventually the toxicity and solvent effects of alcohol are too much for the liver. In the brain alcohol easily crosses the blood brain barrier which serves to protect the brain from harmful substances and directly affects the neurotransmitters and receptors of neurons.

Psychological EffectsAlcohol numbs what you feel including your emotions. You don’t feel as down and lonely. The hours seem to pass by more quickly. If you’re under the influence alcohol gives relief and you just don’t care as much. Although in the long run it doesn’t help. The bad feelings come right back once the alcohol wears off.

More Psychological Effects

Alcohol can also make people confused. If someone has drunk so much that psychotic symptoms happen it’s called an alcohol psychosis.

After a period of heavy drinking there is

always the risk that the drinker will become

confused. He or she will be restless, see

things that aren’t there and pick at things

such as their clothing or blankets.
