uA TRUE THREE-TOOL SPECIALIST...Grayson Atkins is known best as a placekicker, which last year earned him second team Associated Press All-America honors (11x13, four 50+ yards). The Inman, S.C., product, however, is also an outstanding punter, who has averaged 42.9 yards on 54 career attempts (career long 81-yarder vs. The Citadel, 2018), and a true weapon on kickoffs, where he has delivered touchbacks on 39-of-69 attempts, including 10 of 14 this year. He’s also yet to land one of his kickoffs out of bounds. His strong work in all areas has helped him land four SoCon Special Teams Player of the Week scrolls in his two-plus seasons, most recently following the Paladins 46-13, season opening win over Charleston Southern.uMILESTONE WATCH NO.2...Senior wide receiver Thomas Gordon turned in a career best performance against Georgia State, matching a personal high with eight catches for a new career high 163 yards and a touchdown. His work against the Panthers bumped his Paladin numbers to 124 receptions (7th/FU) and 1,992 yards (5th/FU), and seven touchdowns

uMILESTONE WATCH NO.3...Furman preseason All-SoCon junior tailback Devin Wynn heads into the Virginia Tech game with 989 career rushing yards. The SoCon’s current leading rusher with 214 yards (8.6 ypg) and two touchdowns, he ran 13 times for 83 yards and a touchdown against Georgia State, extending his stretch of quality performances that has seen him register 726 yards and six touchdowns over the last seven games (103.7 ypg). The Greensboro, Ga., product and Atlanta Journal-Constitution All-State pick rushed for a school record 5,106 yards and 62 touchdowns in his prep career at Greene County High School.uHIGH OCTANE OFFENSE...Furman leads the SoCon in total offense (517.5 ypg) and ranks second in scoring offense (44.0 ypg). The Paladins rolled up 509 yards in a season opening, 46-13 win over Charleston Southern and came back with 526 yards and 42 points last Saturday against Georgia State. The 42 points versus GSU tied the Furman standard for most points versus a FBS foe since the program transitioned to FCS (formerly I-AA) in 1982: 42 vs. N.C. State, 1985 (42-20 win) and vs. North Carolina, 2006 (45-42 loss). The back-to-back 500-yard total offense performances is the program’s first since 2016 when Furman posted 511 and 506 yards, respectively, in wins over ETSU (52-7) and VMI (24-10).uRUN FURMAN, RUN...With all five starters returning along its offensive line, including All-SoCon tackles Bo Layton and Andy Godwin, Furman, it is safe to conclude, plans on rely heavily on its ground game this fall. A 369-yard rushing tally and gaudy 9.2 yards per rush average posted
in the season opening win over Charleston Southern and solid 215-yard performance (5.2 ypg) against Georgia State on Saturday underscores that plan. The impressive outing against Charleston Southern featured a ground game that saw five players rush for scores, led by junior Devin Wynn (12 rushes, 131 yards). In addition true freshman Wayne Anderson, Jr. and redshirt sophomore running back Carson Maples both reeled off 66-yard touchdown bolts.uFIRST TIME STARTERS...Furman’s starting lineup against Charleston Southern featured four players making their career debuts: redshirt freshman Devin Abrams (RB), sophomore Taylor Hodge (NG), junior Landon Lawrence (DT), and redshirt junior Dillon Vann (BAN). The list grew to five on Saturday as redshirt freshman Travis Blackshear (CB) earned his first career nod, stepping in for injured redshirt senior Quandarius Weems.uSACK ‘EM UP...Led by FCS sacks leader Adrian Hope’s 15.0 takedowns in 2018, Furman registered 27 sacks a year ago en route to gaining a share of the SoCon championship. The Paladins totaled five sacks, getting contributions from five different players, in the season opening win over Charleston Southern.u FURMAN VS. FBS...Furman has acquitted itself in respectable fashion in clashes with FBS foes over the years. In addition to the six victories recorded vs. FBS opposition since 1982 (the most by any SoCon school), there have been other contests that saw the Paladins compete for the win right up to the finish. Against defending UPI champion Georgia Tech in 1991, Furman was leading 17-16 with the football before a fumble at its own 22 with 1:41 left led to a game winning field goal by the Yellow Jackets, who went on to defeat Stanford in the Aloha Bowl. In 2004 the Paladins led Fiesta Bowl-bound Pittsburgh, 38-24, in the fourth quarter before falling in overtime, 41-38. Two years later, in 2006, Furman built a 35-31 fourth quarter lead on North Carolina before dropping a 44-42 decision to the Tar Heels. And in 2011 against Florida, Furman grabbed a 22-7 first quarter lead on Florida and trailed 37-32 after three quarters before a couple of pick-sixes in the fourth period helped the Gators pull away. The Paladins’ last FBS win was a 16-15 decision registered over UCF in 2015.

uFURMAN FUTURE FBS GAMES: Furman has several future games scheduled against FBS foes:
uNEW STAFF FOR 2019...Furman’s full-time coaching staff sports two new faces for 2019, cornerbacks coach Rod Ojong, who joined the Paladin staff following a year at Austin Peay, and safeties coach Corico Wright, who took over the safeties spot after spending the last year at James Madison. Ojong succeeds Addison Williams, who took a position at Auburn, and Wright stepped in for Chad Staggs, who went to Coastal Carolina as defensive coordinator. A twist to that move was the elevation of assistant coach Duane Vaughn to the Paladins’ defensive coordinator position.uSEVEN PALADINS NAMED PRESEASON ALL-SOCON...Furman placed seven players on the 2019 Preseason All-SoCon Team as selected by the head coaches. They include three first team selections — Bo Layton (OT), Adrian Hope (BAN), and Grayson Atkins (PK) — and four second team picks: Andy Godwin (OT), Devin Wynn (TB), Elijah McKoy (LB), and Bryan Okeh (FS).u ATKINS, HOPE PRESEASON ALL-AMERICANS...Furman junior placekicker Grayson Atkins and redshirt sophomore bandit Adrian Hope were named to to the STATS Preseason All-America second team. Last year the duo garnered second team Associated Press All-America honors following stellar campaigns that saw Atkins convert 11-of-13 field goals, including his last 11 and four from 50+ yards. Hope, meanwhile, paced all of FCS with 15.0 sacks and ranked second nationally with five forced fumbles. He was the top vote getter among freshman defenders and finished fourth overall in voting for the STATS Jerry Rice Award, which is giving annually to the top freshman in the FCS. u HOPE NAMED TO BUCK BUCHANAN AWARD WATCH LIST...In addition to landing preseason All-America recognition, Adrian Hope was recently named to the STATS Buck Buchanan Award Watch List. The award is given annually to the top defensive player in the FCS and will be presented prior to the national championship game in January.u 2019 TEAM CAPTAINS...Furman team captains elected for the 2019 season by vote of their teammates include senior offensive tackle Andy Godwin, redshirt junior offensive tackle Bo Layton, senior linebacker Donavan Perryman, and senior spur Jordan Willis.uTRACKING ADRIAN HOPE...Adrian Hope’s FCS leading 15.0 sacks in 2018 were indeed remarkable when considering he came off the bench in all 10 games, and the tally represented nearly half of his season’s 32 tackles. He capped his stellar campaign by notching 2.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and a game ending fumble recovery (following his own sack) that preserved Fur-man’s 35-30, SoCon title clinching win over Mercer in Macon.
uHIS MIDDLE NAME IS “WINNER”: When head coach Clay Hendrix lured former Paladin wide receiver George Quarles ‘89 back to Furman in early 2017, he gained the services of one of the country’s most successful high school mentors. In fact, Quarles, who posted a 250-16 (.939) coaching record and won 11 state championships in 18 seasons at Maryville (Tenn.) High School, went 10-7 in his first 17 games at Maryville but then reeled off a 240-9 mark (.964) thereafter, including a 74-game winning streak. The most successful head coach (by winning percentage) in America from 2007-16, Quarles, a Jefferson City, Tenn., native, who took over offensive coordinator and quarterback coaching duties in January, was inducted into both the Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame and Tennessee Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2017.uPROUD OF THIS GUY: Brian Bratton ‘05, one of Furman’s all-time great receivers and kickoff return specialists, is in his sixth year on the coaching staff at his alma mater. Before joining the coaching ranks, he played six seasons in the Canadian Football League , where he was a member of two Grey Cup Championship squads with the Montreal Alouettes. The recipient of the CFL’s 2012 Tom Pate Award, which is similar to the NFL’s Walter Payton “Man of The Year” Award, Bratton, a 2011 Furman Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, earned SoCon Freshman of the Year and All-America accolades in 2001 after averaging a nation best 37.2 yards on kickoff returns, three of which went for scores. He caught 131 passes for 1,826 yards, and 18 TDs in his career, helping the Paladins to a pair of SoCon titles (2001 & ‘04), three playoff appearances, and FCS national runner-up finish.uFURMAN IN THE NFL: Furman currently has one player in the NFL: offensive guard Dakota Dozier ‘13 from Cayce, S.C. Dozier is in his sixth season overall in the NFL and first with the Minnesota Vikings following five seasons with the New York Jets, who selected him in the fourth round of the 2014 Draft. He was a four-year starter (2010-13) at offensive tackle for Furman and two-time All-America selection, earning consensus honors as a senior after taking home the SoCon Jacobs Blocking Award.

Introduced as Furman’s new head football coach on December 19, 2016, Clay Hendrix in two seasons has al-ready reinvigorated a Paladin football program long ac-customed to success. Hendrix, a former standout Paladin offensive guard and assistant coach who returned to his alma mater following a decade as an assistant coach at the United States Air Force Academy, directed Furman to an 8-5 campaign and Football Championship (FCS) playoff ap-pearance in 2017, improving on a three-win 2016 season and defying a preseason No. 7 Southern Conference tab by playing for a share of league title in the regular sea-son finale en route to finishing a consensus No. 20 in two major FCS polls. This past season Furman took another step under Hendrix’s guidance by claiming a 35-30 road victory over Mercer in the regular season finale to secure a 6-4 record and share of the program’s 14th SoCon championship — the most in league history. That Hendrix has been able to orchestrate an impres-sive rebound of Paladin football was just what Furman football supporters envisioned when he was named the 23rd head coach in program history, which dates from 1889. Following a pair of narrow, heartbreaking losses in its first three games in 2017, Furman reeled off seven straight wins — the program’s longest run of success streak since 1999 — en route its first appearance in the polls since 2014. The winning streak helped the Paladins garner their first playoff berth and postseason victory since 2013, and was recognized for its significance by Hendrix landing consensus SoCon Coach of the Year hon-ors in voting by his peers and media. Fueling Furman’s resurgence was a staple of former Paladin greatness and hallmark of Hendrix’s coaching DNA — a balanced, high powered offense (32.6 ppg) driven by an effective running game and efficient pass-ing attack (168.54 rating). Also playing a key role was a young, aggressive Paladin defense that led the league in sacks (34). All told, 13 Paladins earned All-SoCon honors in 2017, highlighted by All-America center Matthew
Schmidt, who extended Furman’s unmatched tradition of producing Jacobs Blocking Award winners by becom-ing the school’s 13th recipient (and seventh Hendrix pu-pil) to capture the prestigious honor. The 2018 campaign saw Furman drop its first three games and have its scheduled home opener against Col-gate cancelled due to Hurricane Florence. The Paladins rebounded off the slow start, however, by winning six of their final seven games, including a 34-14 triumph over FCS fourth-ranked Wofford. Spicing the impressive stretch run was the outstand-ing play of fifth-year senior quarterback Harris Roberts, who in his first season as a starter paced the SoCon in passing efficiency (182.60), and another strong pass rush highlighted by the play of All-American outside linebacker Adrian Hope, whose FCS leading 15.0 sacks helped him finish fourth (and tops among defensive players) in balloting for the Jerry Rice Award, which is given annually to the top freshman in the FCS. Furman’s successful 2018 campaign extended Hen-drix’s legacy of notable success and consistency, under-scored in the fact that in 37 years of collegiate football, spanning his years as a player and as an assistant coach, he has been part of 31 winning teams that have com-bined to go 296-160-3 (.648). In 10 years at the Air Force Academy, where he coached the offensive line and served as offensive coor-dinator for five seasons, as well as associate head coach over the final seven campaigns, Hendrix played a pivotal role in the Falcons producing some of the top rushing at-tacks in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). That pro-ductivity translated into a 77-53 record (.592), nine bowl game appearances, and four Commander-in-Chief’s Trophies, which is awarded annually based on head-to-head results among the three service academies. Air Force led the Mountain West Conference (MWC) in rushing and ranked in the top 10 nationally eight
times in the last 10 years due, in part, to the quality work of Hendrix-directed offensive lines. All told 19 Falcon of-fensive linemen garnered all-conference recognition and 21 players under Hendrix’s guidance landed Academic All-MWC honors during his tenure in Colorado Springs. In 2016 Air Force posted a 10-3 record and 5-3 mark in the MWC, won its fourth Commander-in-Chief’s Tro-phy this decade, and defeated South Alabama in the Ari-zona Bowl following a 27-20 win over 19th-ranked Boise State on Nov. 25. The Falcons ranked third nationally in rushing offense (322.8 ypg), seventh in FBS in third down conversion percentage (51.4), and averaged over 451.4 yards per game in total offense along with 34.3 points per game. The victory over Boise State represented the final win in an impressive list of Air Force triumphs with Hen-drix on staff. In 2014 the Falcons defeated 21st-ranked Colorado State (27-24) during the regular season and knocked off Western Michigan (38-24) in the Idaho Potato Bowl to complete a 10-3 campaign. In 2010 Air Force downed Georgia Tech (14-7) in the Independence Bowl, a year after beating 25th-ranked Houston (45-20) in the Armed Forces Bowl. In his first season there, the Falcons handed Notre Dame its biggest setback (41-24) to a service academy since 1963. Hendrix paved his way to Air Force with an exem-plary 19-year record of accomplishment as an assistant coach at Furman, where he served as offensive line coach each year, recruiting coordinator for three seasons, and assistant head coach over his final five campaigns. From 1988-2006 he helped the Paladins post a 155-77-1 re-cord (.667), including a 100-45 Southern Conference mark (.690) that led to six league championships, 11 NCAA FCS (formerly I-AA) playoff appearances, a national runner-up finish in 2001, and 1988 national champion-ship — the first by a SoCon member school and private university in FCS history.

The Hendrix Family: Cal, Clay, LeeAnn, and Mac
Over his final eight seasons on the Paladin staff (1999-06), Furman registered a 73-28 record (.723) and 47-14 worksheet (.770) against SoCon competition en route to three league championships, seven FCS playoff berths, 2001 national runner-up campaign, and seven top 10 final national rankings. Hendrix-directed offensive lines and powerful rush-ing attacks were central in one of the greatest eras in Furman history. In 1999 Furman knocked off North Caro-lina (28-3) on the strength of a 177-yard rushing perfor-mance by tailback Louis Ivory, and in 2000 averaged a school record 307.1 yards per game rushing to spearhead Ivory’s run to the Walter Payton Award, the FCS equiva-lent to the Heisman Trophy. The next year a Paladin line featuring three All-Americans keyed an 12-3 campaign, highlighted by a 24-17 playoff semifinal road win over Georgia Southern that halted the Eagles’ NCAA record 39-game home winning streak. In 2005 a potent Paladin ground game was central to Furman scoring 64 touchdowns and averaging 470.0 yards per game — both school standards. In recognition terms, 25 Hendrix-coached players earned first team all-conference honors and 13 garnered All-America laurels during his Paladin assistant coaching tenure. In addition, five products — center Steve Dug-gan (1990), guard Ben Hall (1999), tackle Josh Moore (2000), tackle Donnie Littlejohn (2001), and tackle Ben Bainbridge (2004) — captured the SoCon’s Jacobs Blocking Award. A sixth recipient, tackle Joel Bell, who was recruited and developed by Hendrix, garnered the award in 2008. Three of Furman’s SoCon leading 15 Academic All-Americans — guards Eric Walter (1990 & ‘91) and Adi Filipovic (2006) — are Hendrix products. A native of Commerce, Ga., where he was a three-sport standout in football, wrestling, and golf as a prep, he starred as an offensive guard on the gridiron, helping Commerce High School to a 13-1 record and 1981 Class 2A state championship. He came to Furman in 1982 on a football scholar-ship under head coach Dick Sheridan and over the next four years, including three seasons as a starter under the tutelage of offensive line coach Robbie Caldwell, played a role in the Paladins posting a 39-10-1 record, winning SoCon championships in 1982, ‘83, and ‘85, and finishing as national runner-up his senior year — a season that saw him earn all-state recognition. Furman also record-ed impressive wins over South Carolina (1982), Georgia Tech (1983), and North Carolina State (1984 & ‘85) dur-ing his playing tenure. Following graduation in 1986, he joined Sheridan’s staff at N.C. State for the 1986 and ‘87 seasons — the first of which featured a Peach Bowl appearance. The Wolfpack beat ACC regular season champion Clemson in 1986 and the seventh-ranked Tigers again the following year. He returned to Furman in 1988 as offensive line coach under head coach Jimmy Satterfield and his influ-ence quickly led to success as Furman registered a 13-2 record and claimed the NCAA FCS championship with a 17-12 triumph over Georgia Southern. He and his wife, LeeAnn Hedgpeth ‘90 of Taylors, S.C., have two sons, Cal and Mac.
As a player, assistant coach, and now head coach, Clay Hendrix has played a key role in 30 winning campaigns over his 36 seasons of collegiate football.

F urman’s Paladin Stadium, nestled beautifully on one of the nation’s most beautiful campuses and boasting a scenic view of Paris Mountain, is the football home of the Paladins,
having opened in 1981 to replace Sirrine Stadium, which served as the site of Furman football for 45 years. During the 2013-14 school year the school completed construc-tion of the Pearce-Horton Football Complex, a 44,000-square foot, four-story facility that serves as the new operational home for Furman football and includes a locker room for 105 players, coaches’ offices, meeting rooms, sports medicine center, and “Mauldin Hall” that highlights the program’s championship history. The new building also features a club level and press box. Design was by McMillan, Pazdan, and Smith of Greenville, and Triangle Construction, also of Greenville, served as builder. In addition to the construction of Pearce-Horton, another significant improvement for Paladin Stadium included the 2013 installation of a new ShawSports “Thunderbolt” playing surface, which replaced the original natural grass field. Fan game day enhancements include the addition of padded chair back seating, improved lighting, and a new pubic address system. Paladin Stadium is the third home of Furman football since 1919. Manly Field, completed in that year, served as the home of Furman football until 1936, when Furman moved the site of its football contests to then-newly constructed Sirrine Stadium. The first game played in Sirrine Stadium — a 14-13 Furman win over Davidson — was the sixth game of the year for Furman during the 1936 season. In 1980, Furman closed its association with Sirrine Stadium with a 28-15 victory over arch-rival The Citadel to win its first outright Southern Conference football championship. Furman opened Paladin Stadium in the same fashion it did Manly and Sirrine, winning the first game played within its confines. The Paladins defeated East Tennessee State, 21-0, in the stadium’s inaugural and have gone on to record a 169-59-1 home record (.740), claiming 11 Southern Conference champion-
ships and the 1988 NCAA I-AA (FCS) national title along the way, including last year’s SoCon crown. In 1985 the stadium’s field was named Eugene Stone Field in honor of Stone, who was directly responsible for the additional seats added to the stadium prior to the 1985 season that increased
the capacity to its current 16,000. In 2009 the school added a digital 13x32 video board and scoreboard. From initial grading to completion, Paladin Stadium took two years to be realized at a cost of approximately $2 million.
