Welcome to Kenya!

KARIBU KENYA!

Long considered to be the Cradle of Civilization,

Kenya is a fascinating land steeped in history,

where many cultures have flourished only to give

way to more. If you want a glimpse of just about

every type of geography, this is the place to visit.

The land features vast plains in the south, forests

in the west, and deserts in the north, where

some Kenyan nomadic tribes like the famed

Maasai and Turkana people(s) carry on their age-

old lives constantly on the move.

Kenya at a Glance

Kenya is located in East Africa; is a

proud member of the East African

Community & prior to British

Colonialism, Kenya’s location on

the Indian Ocean inspired many

adventurers to venture into the

African Interior. Kenya Achieved

Independence on Dec 12, 1963.

Kenya has a diverse ethnic community with 42 tribes composed of the

Bantu and Nilotic Populations and large minorities of the Cushitic

descent (e.g. Somalis) and large Indian, Arab and Chinese communities.

At the heart of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust

based in Nairobi is the conservation activity known

as the Orphans’ Project, which has achieved world-

wide acclaim through its hugely successful elephant

and rhino rescue and rehabilitation program.

The Orphans’ Project exists to offer hope for the

future of Kenya’s threatened elephant and rhino

populations as they struggle against the threat of

poaching for their ivory and horn, and the loss of

habitat due to human population pressures and

conflict, deforestation and drought.

Lake Nakuru is one of the Rift Valley soda lakes at an elevation of 1754m

above sea level. Nakuru means "Dust or Dusty Place" in the Maasai

language. It lies to the south of Nakuru, in the rift valley of Kenya and is

protected by Lake Nakuru National Park.

The lake's abundance of algae attracts the

vast quantity of flamingos that famously

line the shore. Other birds also flourish in

the area, as do warthogs, baboons and

other large mammals. Black and white

rhinos have also been introduced.

The endangered Rothschild Giraffe breeding programme started with the inception

of the Giraffe Centre in 1979 by the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife.

The giraffes breed naturally in an approximate 120 Acreage of land and the young

calves born at the centre are introduced back into the wild at the age of roughly 2

years.

These tame Giraffes are often hand-fed and petted by visitors who are occasionally

allowed to roam the Giraffe enclosure in small groups.

Ever since the breeding started, the centre has handled over 50 Rothschild Giraffes

and most of them have been reintroduced to the wild in selected areas in Kenya that

are well protected.

Issues

Elimu Uzito interns will be working in underdeveloped (ghetto) schools in the areas of Soweto East

(15 minute walk from Riara University) + Laini Saba (near the railway tracks – 10 minute walk from

Riara University). [See KIBERA SLUM Details below]

Most of the children studying in these schools come from families that live on less than $1 USD per

day and cannot afford to provide regular meals for their children or even purchase school books,

uniforms and stationary.

Extreme poverty due to high unemployment and high illiteracy often has meant that most parents

cannot afford to pay tuition fees and as a result these underdeveloped schools have few and

underqualified teachers.

Hunger in school reduces a child’s capacity to learn and increases school dropout rates as children

leave in search of food.

Solutions

Elimu Uzito will tackle the major issue of poverty via fundraisers: the Concert & the Drama. The funds

raised will be used to sponsor children by paying for their tuition fees, school uniforms, exercises

books and stationary. The tuition fees will be utilized by informal schools to hire qualified teachers.

Uzito Integrated Food Program will tackle the major issue of child hunger. [See Global Village Feast].

“Kibera” is the Nubian word for “Forest” or “Jungle”. Kibera is a division of the

Nairobi Area and a neighbourhood of the city of Nairobi that is approx. 5 kilometres

(3.1 mi) from the city centre.

Kibera is the largest slum in Nairobi, and one of the largest urban slum areas in

Africa. Many sources estimate that around 100,000 in Kibera Ward while

Kibera/Kibra proper is estimated to have over 1 million residents.

The Kibera neighbourhood is divided into a number of villages, including KIANDA,

SOWETO EAST, GATWEKERA, KISIMU NDOGO, LINDI, LAINI SABA, SIRANGA,

MAKINA and MASHIMONI. Conditions in Kibera are extremely poor, and most of its

residents lack access to basic services, including electricity and running water.

Kibera Slum (Nairobi)

Page 19: AIESEC RIARA Project Elimu Uzito (16 June - 4 August) [ 2014]

The Elimu Uzito Integrated Food Program (aka Uzito Food Program) is an ongoing program run by

AIESEC RIARA that supplements existing food programmes and delivers a food program (where none

exists) in informal schools based in slums.

Every Friday from 12:30PM – 2:00PM at Riara University main campus (Mbagathi Way, Nairobi) Uzito

interns, AIESECers from several universities in the CBD region along with Riara students will cook food

using Riara’s kitchen facility and prepare a Global Village Feast open to university students, parents

and friends of AIESEC. Participants will bring either:

500 KES Donation or more.

Home cooked or purchased food that can serve at least 3 persons.

Donation of at least 3 or 4 non-perishable food items (for the food program in Kibera schools).

PLEASE NOTE: keep all food items and beverages in the luggage you checked into the plane. DO NOT

carry food items or beverages in your carry-on luggage.
