President`s MessageAs a recent graduate from the I.H. Asper School of Business at the University of Manitoba, I can confidently say that my university experience wouldn’t be what it is without my involvement in AIESEC.

AIESEC has helped me discover and develop into the person I am today, and has showed me that the opportunities available are endless.

My first big role in AIESEC was being Vice President of Outgoing Exchange. In that one year term, I learned and got hands-on experience that I wouldn’t have gotten in a classroom. Some of the many things I learned inckuded how to work on an executive team, conduct meetings, organize events, manage people, and most importantly how much the world has to offer. AIESEC’s growing network allows you to get in touch with people from all over the world, and through my role, I was able to help send people to the Dominican Republic, India, Tunisia, Turkey, Greece, Sweden and Cameroon. The fact that I was able to help someone with their exchange experience and make a positive impact in their life is both very rewarding and motivating.

Now, as President of AIESEC Manitoba, I hope to continue helping people with their exchange experiences. However, instead of sending people away, I want to help those in other countries experience our culture and life here in Manitoba. My team and I are working hard to increase our external awareness because, a lot of businesses don’t know about what we can offer. In addition, we want to help companies diversify their workplace and provide them with unique, culture building experiences. More and more companies are looking for ways to differentiate themselves and explore innovative ideas, and by working together, I believe we can help companies reach those goals.

To most people, she may be just your average female walking down streets of Winnipeg;

but for others that know her, Laura Roncallo Lafont, at the young age of 22, has travelled and walked down many streets of different countries.

Lafont would not have been able to accomplish half the things she has done in her life, if it were not for AIESEC, “I was able to travel and experience different countries and cultures through AIESEC,” Lafont explains.

Lafont joined AIESEC in 2006 back in her hometown of Barranquilla, Colombia, to participate in the exchange program. She was heavily involved in the exchange aspect of AIESEC working as an Account Manager for the Outgoing Exchange portfolio.

Through this role, Lafont managed to learn a lot about the AIESEC exchange process and gained valuable experience in both the teamwork and leadership setting.

Finally, when the time came, she was ready for her first internship. While her first internship was in Germany, Lafont is currently on her second internship here in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Working for Ibex, a local Winnipeg business, as a Marketing and Customer Service Support. Lafont managed to easily adjust to her new lifestyle. “I was mentally prepared before coming here,

thanks to my first internship,” describes Lafont. “It was very easy for me to adjust to the different culture. And [AIESEC Manitoba] is always a great source of help whenever I need anything.”

Up until now, Lafont’s most cherished moments of her internships has been her many travels.

“Whenever I have the

time, I take the opportunity to travel to many cities,” explains Lafont. “I did it in Europe, and I’m doing it now in Canada. And I enjoy every minute of it.” Given AIESEC’s large global network, it is never too difficult to find a fellow AIESECer for assistance.

“AIESEC’s unique culture has taught me to always keep an open mind, ” says Lafont. “Although AIESEC is located in different countries that possess their own culture, once you find an AIESEC Local Committee, you’ll see that they share

the same passion that I was taught back home in Colombia. That’s what I love about AIESEC; you’re never a stranger wherever you go.”

As she finishes the remainder of her internship here in Winnipeg, Lafont is ready to complete her AIESEC career. “As of now, my life is on hold while I finish my internship.” says Lafont, “I really do enjoy my life here in Winnipeg. But, I eventually plan to go back to Colombia, and help out my Local Committee in any way I can. I want to share my experience with others so they too can have similar experiences.”

Lafont’s AIESEC experience is just one of the many lives whom have changed because of AIESEC, and she is always w i l l i n g to share her journey with anyone. “Take advantage of what

AIESEC can offer you. The experience you gain from AIESEC is definitely a life changing one. It’s also really helpful after you graduate because, not only does it give you a life changing experience you can never get in a classroom, but, if you let yourself, it opens your mind to a world of many possibilities you never thought you had.” ӿ

One thing Maria Fernanda “Mafe“ Pinzon wanted to experience when she

applied for an internship was to experience many cultures, and she found just that, along with a new home.

After having been encouraged by her mother back home in Medellín, Colombia to follow in the footsteps of a family friend, Pinzon joined AIESEC in 2005 after graduating university with a degree in civil engineering. She became Vice President of Communications in 2007 for her Local Committee where she gained valuable lessons in communications and how to lead a team.

“In my role, I had to work closely with my team as I tried to get AIESEC’s brand out there,” explains Pinzon, as she describes her experience. Pinzon embarked on a new journey the following year: her first internship here in Winnipeg, Manitoba with All-Fab Building Components Inc. “I wanted to do an internship because I wanted to experience many cultures,” explains

Pinzon. “I came to Winnipeg a n d

experienced more cultures than I ever did in just one city.”

Multiculturalism was not the only thing Pinzon experienced in Winnipeg, as she looks back at her first day of her internship, while meeting the general manager at All-Fab. “It was cold,” says Pinzon. “I wore my mittens and jacket while I was working and even shook his hand with my mitts on.”

Adjusting to the weather was not the only thing on Pinzon’s mind; she also had to deal with with living on her own for the first time and adjust to a new working environment.“In Colombia, everything is

made out of concrete and so that’s what I was taught,” says Pinzon. “While here in Winnipeg, everything is made out of wood, so I had to re-teach myself. However, my manager was very kind and helpful in assisting me when needed. For that I am very thankful.”

Returning back to her home in Colombia after her first experience with Winnipeg in 2008, she realized that she belonged somewhere else. “Going back home felt more like a long holiday for me,” explains Pinzon. “I went back [home] and thought I would feel the same, but I didn’t. I felt out of place.”So when All-Fab offered her a

permanent position with Olympic

Builders Supply, a subsidiary company o f All-Fab, she did not have to think twice about it.

“I enjoyed my independence when I was in Winnipeg, so I knew I had to come back,” says Pinzon. “And I’m not getting any younger, so I’d really like to settle down soon.”

Pinzon is currently back for her second internship in Winnipeg, and she plans to continue her life here.

“[AIESEC] is more than just offering internships. AIESEC helps you discover yourself in new ways you’ve never thought of before,” says Pinzon. “I love being here, I love my job.” ӿ

T he National Leadership Development Conference (NLDC) 2010: 191

delegates, 28 universities, five days of intense learning, and one great city—Winnipeg, Manitoba, the heart of the continent.

This past May, students from across Canada came together to this great city of ours to engage themselves in a learning environment like no other. Throughout a series of leadership workshops and training sessions, personal growth and development, lectures and discussions with strong leaders and role models, NLDC provided all delegates the skills and knowledge required for success in their own personal and professional endeavours.

“This conference really opened up my eyes. I got to learn a lot about AIESEC on a whole new level, but most importantly, I got the chance to learn more about myself,” describes a delegate.

“I learned that, it’s okay to be the nut or a follower once in awhile,” as she quotes one of the presentations “A leader needs the guts to stand alone and look ridiculous. However, it’s always

the first follower that transforms that lone nut into a leader.”

Of course, all of this would not have been achieved if it were not for the drive and commitment of AIESEC Manitoba’s Organizing Committee (OC): Samara Chandran , Bernard Phanthavong, Joy Trawon, and Alec Lim.

With only a small team of four members, the OC team worked close together to plan an unforgettable conference. However, this conference would not have been successful if not for the 16 sponsors (listed below) who contributed to the conference. Their contribution facilitated in reaching the OC’s goal and vision, and especially to the learning environment of the delegates.

“I was shocked by the amount of the students that were fairly new to AIESEC, and this being their first conference, because this is a higher level conference,” describes Joy Trawon, the VP of Public Relations.

“But, in the end, this conference definitely solidified their AIESEC experience” adds Trawon. “As new members, this conference,

allowed them to truly see the passion and impact of AIESEC. They can take what they learn here, and bring it back to help run their own Local Committee.”

On behalf of the OC, they’d like to extend their greatest appreciation to the University of Manitoba (U of M) for not only being the Platinum Sponsor of the conference, but for the President of U of M himself, David T. Barnard, for taking his time out of his busy schedule to deliver an impactful speech on leadership.

As one delegate commented right after the speech, “[An] excellent leadership speech by the U of M President. Leadership development tracks and speakers make a great day of personal development.”

While the closing of the conference may have been a tearful one for few, the knowledge and experience gained from the conference, along with shared new memories and long-lasting friendships, the delegates were more than ready and pumped to take what they learned back home. ӿ

PARTNER PROFILE | All-Fab Building Components Inc.By: Leila Esteban

After searching through intern profiles from around the world, All-Fab Building Components Inc. found

the perfect employee to welcome to their team.

“We couldn’t find what we were looking for in a candidate here in Winnipeg, but through AIESEC, we found the perfect match really quick,” explains Lisa Ballentyne, Corporate Human Resource Manager of All-Fab, of the organization’s first experience with AIESEC.

All the information needed on the AIESEC interns from the global network organization came quick and was easily accessible for the employers to view.

After signing up their intern Maria Fernanda Pinzon from Colombia for a term position, they were quite pleased with the results and were eager for her to extend her stay.

Although, Pinzon had to return back to Colombia at the end of the term, All-Fab re-signed a new contract with Pinzon to work for their subsidiary organization, Olympic Builders Supply, and brought her back to Winnipeg this past January.

It was a learning experience for both sides of the partnership. “Bringing [her] back on through another channel was

quick and all the information we needed was there,” describes Ballentyne. “Any problems that aroused were handled very well.”

All-Fab’s involvement has added valuable learning experience for AIESEC Manitoba members on many different levels. “I had to interview an employer, which I’ve never done before,” explains Daisy Munoz, VP of Communications. “It felt different since I was the one asking the questions, but it was a great experience overall.”

All-Fab’s continued support is aids the growth and development of not only AIESEC members and interns, but also for themselves.

“As a parent and employer, I’m impressed by the fact that these young students volunteer their time and energy into the work that they do.”

“From what I’ve gathered and experienced, they don’t get paid and the knowledge their gaining through AIESEC, doesn’t come from a classroom.” Ballentyne adds. “I’m also amazed by their large global network and support system. [AIESEC’s] Global Internship Program is a great way to learn from other cultures and countries.” ӿ
