William Withering’s book in 1785 cited extracts of digitalis, a type of plant, for treating excess fluid build up in the body.

Digitalis is the active ingredient in treatments used today such as Digoxin and Digitoxin.

The first half of the 20th Century saw the widespread use of diuretics. By 1967, loop diuretics, which block channels in the kidney and vasodilators, which relax blood vessels, were introduced as treatments for the symptoms of heart failure.

Both of which are still used today.

During the 1970’s and 1980’s, intravenous nitrates and inotropes were approved for patients with AHF. These drugs assist patients by relaxing blood vessels and increasing the

number of contractions in the heart, respectively. Nitrates are still used to treat acute heart failure today.

Despite significant progress in treating patients with other heart conditions, patients with AHF haven’t benefited from a treatment breakthrough in 20 years. Commonly used medicines for AHF treat only the immediate signs and symptoms, such as fluid build up

and shortness of breath. There is an urgent need for new treatments that have the potential to increase a patient’s life expectancy and protect vital organs against the

life-threatening damage of an AHF episode.
