Narrative Report

Last 30th of July 2015, the students of Buga National High School, Animal

Production class conducted an outdoor activity at the Research Station for Philippine

Native Chicken located in the town of Leon. The institute was built by the Central

Philippine University to facilitate the practicum and actual performances on Senior High

School in the chosen field of TVL. The said outdoor activity is to furthermore widen the

student’s knowledge about their tackled topic regarding poultry production.

The activity was spearheaded by the T.L.E, Animal Production teacher, Mr. Joey

Glenn Cabana with the support of the Buga National High School principal, Mrs. Loida

C. Catalinio. Renting three tricycles, the students and their teacher, went on a small ride

up to the Benigno Aquino Bridge which links the two banks of the Sibalom River. The

research institute was just a short uphill trek from the bridge and was shaded by trees.

The main building of the institute was situated on a flat clearing atop the hill and also

contained their very own feed mill in which the institute’s own supply of feeds were

made. A part also served as the temporary living quarters of the caretaker.

The students arrived at the institute a few minutes after ten and was welcomed

warmly and wholeheartedly by the caretaker, Mr. Froilan Cabarles. At first, the students

were just oriented by Mr. Cabarles about the research institute and then led them to the

feed mill. The feed mill consists of a hammer mill which is used for grinding raw

materials such as oysters, a feed mixing machine, and a pelleting machine for converting

mixedn feed into pellets.

Mr. Cabarles showed the students the finished product and let them actually to

have contact with it to feel its texture. There were questions asked before leaving

towards the brooder area. The brooder area wasn’t entirely finished so the students

proceeded uphill to the area where actual research were made. The weather had been

inclement the other day, causing the path to be slippery and muddy and unfortunately

harder to climb. The students had a hard time climbing up the steep path.

One housing enabled the research named “Determination of Chick Quantitative

Phenotypic traits associated with Growth Performance”. Chickens were evenly separated

in cages in each housing for more precise observation of every sample. Outside each

housing were washing stations provided with good deal of clean water for the compliance

of proper sanitation that is to be observed. A student asked from where all the water

supply was coming. According to Mr. Cabarles, they dug up a well and the water was

stored in a water tank up the hill.

The housings were randomly separated in the area and housed quite a number of

fowl. There were some born with mutated genes, causing an abnormality of having a

longer leg. Due to the noon heat, the chickens acted a little bit out of their habits; they

constantly drink water on their waterer and flap their wings almost constantly.

With Mr. Cabarles on the lead, the students climbed up the muddy and steep path

into the grower area. The grower area as what Mr. Cabarles said was made up of 20

housings and nurtured egg laying chickens. As they climbed up higher, the vegetation

becomes thicker. Out of mere curiosity, a student asked if snakes were present in the area

and Mr. Cabarles said that those were hunted out during the construction and some other

reptiles were present but were already extinguished out. The party climbed higher up to

the breeding area and reached a fork in the road leading to the phases of the breeding

area. The breeding area is open space with small shed for the hens to incubate their eggs

until they hatch. There were free flowing waterers in the breeding area. The students took

pictures of hens laying in the haystacks before proceeding to the other phases.

On the way, they passed another housing for the research “Determination of the

Effectiveness of VCO As topical treatment for Caponizing”.

The party descended down a few minutes before eleven. The students gathered in

the shed of the main building for a small discussion before the students leave. According

to Mr. Cabarles, a housing costs about 28,000 to 30,000 thousand pesos. He added that

the institute is always open to those who wanted to visit. The students embarked back to

Buga National High School about a few minutes after eleven.
