Addleshaw Goddard is one of the few international law firms to have a dedicated Africa Business Group. We see the region as a key part

of global growth and we have invested accordingly, we regularly spend time in market.

The result of our investment is that we have a strong network of preferred local firms and we have a wealth of experience having acted in disputes, deals and/or in an advisory function right across sub-Saharan Africa.

We are also passionate about tech. We have a specialist digital team and two years ago we launched our own award winning “Doing Business in Africa” App (which is free to download from iTunes).

The Africa Technology Business Network is a great organisation, which we have supported for a number of years now. We are therefore extremely proud to host and support the Africa Business Technology Forum, the first Africa focused event in London Tech Week.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to Addleshaw Goddard and this event. We very much look forward to debating the future of tech across the African continent and hearing of some new and exciting innovations that are in the pipeline.

The Forum comes at a time when global interest in Africa Tech is at a peak with the sector receiving more Foreign Direct Investment than ever before. It has also been receiving a lot of media coverage, including major publications such as the FT, TechCrunch, The Economist and The Next Web.So why all the interest? This is exactly what we aim to explore through this Forum.

We’ve brought together leading technology and business experts with extensive experience in the African technology sector to share real insights into the emerging opportunities and trends as well as share success strategies for unlocking them.

Below are 5 key Africa Tech opportunities that will be explored during the Forum:

Investment in Africa tech startups

An innovation incubator for inclusive financial services

A growing underserved consumer market

CleanTech energy opportunities

Africa as a source for global tech talent

Venture capitalists and Private Equity funds alike are viewing Africa with increased interest. In 2014, over $4.2b was raised for Africa Private Equity and close to $500m in Venture Capital invested in Africa tech startups. Some investors are already reaping the benefits such as the early investors in African online streaming service iRoko TV who, it is reported made a 3000% return on their investment. Our PE and VC panels today will look at where the most promising opportunities lie and what investors need to be aware of.

Africa has become the innovation ground for infrastructure-light, inclusive solutions of the future. This is particularly true in the Fintech sector which took 30% by value of investments in the region in 2015. Fintech innovation is thriving as entrepreneurs and investors see the opportunity created by surging smartphone adoption and the ease of winning customers in a setting where 80% are unbanked. Our fintech panel today will explore the disruption taking place across the sector and where the biggest opportunities are likely to emerge.

Africa’s growing population is expected to account for one-fifth of the world’s population by 2025. According to McKinsey, Africas consumer-facing industries are expected to grow by $400 billion by 2020, representing the continents largest business opportunity.Africa Tech business Forum partner Ovamba is hosting a roundtable to share strategies on how to unlock this growing consumer market. In addition, Stephen Haggard Executive chair of Eneza Education whose EdTech solution is used by over 800,000 young learners in Africa, will share what they have learnt about young African technology consumers.

There are over 600 million Africans without access to electricity. This demand combined with the chronic lack of infrastructure and rise in payments solutions has sparked a “gold-rush” in the innovation of cleantech and off-grid solutions. Our Cleantech panel consisting of experts working across clean energy, investment and fintech will provide a multi-faceted view of the opportunities and trends emerging in the sector.

With nearly 200 million people aged between 15 and 24, Africa has one of the youngest populations in the world. While others argue about the risks this presents, organisations such as Andela and Tunga see it as an opportunity. They are training African youth to become high quality software developers and connecting them with global businesses who are faced with a growing tech talent shortage. The digital jobs panel today will share their views on how digital platforms and payments are being leveraged to create global opportunities for Africa’s emerging tech talent as well as how this presents an exciting opportunity for global businesses to tap into.

Startups West Africa: You witnessed the birth of the internet in Africa and the rapid penetration rate, what were the big opportunities in the early 2000’s in Nigeria?

Tomie Davies: Well, the big opportunities were not in the internet funnily enough, it was in voice. And the fact that the voice telephony market was totally undeserved and with the introduction of GSM we saw the take-off of mobility and telephony and so when the internet came of the back of that, commerce was a natural fit.

SWA: How has the scene changed over the last decade?

TD: As the Nigerian population has grown more and more youthful and increased in fact across the con-tinent, what we’re starting to see is innovative uses of technology, mobile technology to be specific, to address the challenges that are uniquely that of the continent. Infrastructure is one of the key ones.Historically without telephones people were traveling, making unnecessary travel. We saw reduction in that. We saw elements of creativity so you find that the whole Nollywood scene and the music industry took inspiration from the advent of technology. Most people don’t realize that.

SWA: Are any new industries to emerge from technology?

TD: We’re just at the beginning. The mobile phone is just an indicator, the concept is around mobility. Before we went to work, now we work. So if you look at that as a methodological concept you start to see that the ability to do things on the go is increasing and that fundamentally is changing the way that we do just about anything.

SWA: Comparing the entrepreneurs from decade ago to now, do you think we’re seeing entrepreneurs

AN INTERVIEWTOMI DAVIESWITH

Tomi Davies is a well-known figure in the African startup scene. He founded the Lagos Angel Network and is the president of the African Business Angel Network (ABAN).

“ “

improving, becoming more business savvy and more general innovation happening?

TD: I don’t know about business savviness, but I do know about innovation. What I do also know is we’re starting to see certain undeniable trends. First is, the continent is getting younger, the results and effect is that we’re having some critical issues that are unique to the continent. In the West, you have an aging population and the challenges associated with that around health we have a more youthful population and the challenges associated with that around education. So I expect and I’m starting to see innovative use of technology in education.

SWA: How did you get started in angel investing?

TD: Oh that’s very simple. A friend of mine wanted to start a company in South Africa and he needed

some extra cash and I put some money in and sat on the board and started advising. Today that company is in over 36 countries. Since then we sort of continued to help other founders.

SWA: What have been your best investments?

TD: Maybe Strike Entertainment, Sproxil Nigeria, SlimTrader. Yeah, I think those would be the three. I call them the three S’s.

SWA: What advice do you have for the young and ambitious entrepreneurs in Africa - what are the real opportunities and what should their first steps be to unlock them?

TD: They just need to look around them and solve problems that they see on day to day basis. Like everyone else in the world is doing. There aren’t any silver bullets. There isn’t go this direction, else you get herd mentality. People need to solve local problems for real people and then commerce will follow.

Startups West Africa: What is the VC4A story – how did the site start?

Ben White:  Venture Capital for Africa (VC4A) started as a volunteer led initiative in 2007, and continues to grow organically as a thriving social network to this day. In the effort to meet the growing demand of our members, we decided to professionalize the organization in February of 2010.

The 2nd generation platform VC4Africa.biz was launched in November that same year with a 3rd generation platform VC4A.com following in Q1 2016. Contrary to many initiatives coming online today, VC4A was a community well before it was a platform or an organization.

VC4A has helped to increase the visibility of the ecosystem globally – mentors, investors, program managers, academics, media professionals and many more stakeholders recognize the VC4A platform as a channel to reach the promising founders across the continent.

SWA: How did you first get involved with Africa?

BW: Started working in television production. Worked on productions across Africa, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. This was in 2003. I could see the mobile and Internet revolution picking up speed and wanted to be part of that. This idea that more than 1 billion people could be connected in less than one generation.

Got together with a team to launch AfricaNews.com, now part of EuroNews. We built up a network of 4,000 reporters, photographers and film makers across the continent and set up production businesses

The Africa platform for startup funding, VC4A (Venture Capital for Africa) is a fast growing community of business professionals in 159 countries dedicated to building game changing companies on the African continent.

in Ghana, Kenya, and the Netherlands.

The first signs of the African startup started to appear around 2009. Wanting to know more, a group of us formed a research collaboration between the University of Amsterdam and the Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda.

I conducted what I believe is the first and maybe the only ethnographic study that looks at the emergence of software cultures in and around Kampala. My interest is to understand in how communities across the continent are working to become part of the global information society, and in how far these individuals can transition the continent from consumption to production.

Following the research, I joined Hivos to help shape the East Africa entrepreneurship program, and where we made investments in projects like Kibera Mappers and Ushahidi. I remember our meetings in the NaiLab before there was any paint on the walls. In fact, it was at the launch of the iHub a group of hub founders initiated AfriLabs as a pan African association for African innovation hubs.

SWA: What does it take to build a startup ecosystem?

BW: Any healthy startup ecosystem starts with a strong community of entrepreneurs. Founders have to come together in a common interest to collaborate and work together. Start a coworking space, incubator or accelerator. Set up programs and invite seasoned entrepreneurs and investors to share their views. Engage government and help them understand why the community is important and how they can support. Coming together like this creates a necessary foundation needed for others to get involved.

BEN WHITE, FOUNDER VC4A

Having a qualified team is one of the most important steps you can take in setting up a new venture.“ “

SWA:  What is your advice to the entrepreneurs on the ground in West Africa – what are the opportunities and how to start?

BW: Start simple. Look for problems you understand. Reach out to stakeholders to get their views and to test your assumptions. Leverage whatever resources and network you have to work out solutions and show they are working. Be critical about your strengths and honest about your weaknesses.

Seek out co-founders that compliment your skill set. Having a qualified team is one of the most important steps you can take in setting up a new venture. Given the right skills are in place, you can start on implementation. The more traction you build up the more convincing the opportunity is for others. Tap into local events and innovation hubs to connect with others in the community.
