An adverb clause is a phrase added to a sentence to make sentences flow from one idea to the next.

As you may have noticed, the writer jumps around from one idea to the next. This is almost like flipping a light on and off over and over again.

Let’s pretend the room is black. If I turned on the lamp in this corner, you would need to move to this corner to be able to read. If I turned off this lamp and turned on a lamp in the other corner, I would need to move to the other corner to read.

The Analogy

Let’s see how many times I have to turn the light off and on when I read Day With Dad.

Every time I jump topics in the story, I will turn off the lamp in this corner and move to a different corner and turn on the lamp in the other corner. I will keep repeating this pattern until the end of the story.
