“I feel a huge attachment to Cheltenham Prep. It all adds up to a very special place, from the fantastic singing in Chapel to all the special celebration events the school is so good at putting on. It will be a very sad day indeed when we, as parents, as well as

our children, have to leave.”Current parent

Our EthosAt Cheltenham College Preparatory School (Cheltenham Prep), we provide an all-round, but clearly academic education that prepares children for the challenges of modern life . Fundamental to our ethos is:

• Excellence in the classroom: stimulating and inspirational teaching and learning which challenges all pupils to go beyond their respective levels of current achievement .

• Breadth outside the classroom: extra-curricular programmes which encourage participation, leadership, teamwork, good organisation and a variety of experiences which may sow the seeds of a lifelong interest .

• Nurture of, and genuine care for, individual pupils: pastoral care which is sensitive, putting children’s welfare first and which works closely in partnership with parents to ensure happy, successful and confident children .

We welcome pupils with a range of abilities and, through really good teaching and learning, we will provide all pupils with the opportunity to fulfil their academic potential . Pupils are encouraged to aspire to be the ‘best they can be’ .

Cheltenham Prep is a special place . We will continue to provide a broad-ranging education which produces happy, well-rounded and confident individuals in preparation for a variety of senior schools .

BoardingCheltenham Prep owes its unique atmosphere, ethos and reputation to its status as a true boarding and day school which is open 24/7 . A resident team of experienced boarding staff is led by Bob and Faye Wells . They, together with around 40 full time Boarders and 30 regular flexi boarders, form a large, diverse and extremely happy family .

Mr and Mrs Wells believe in running the House as ‘reasonable parents’ and as such, older boarders are expected to help look after their younger boarding brothers and sisters . All Boarders and boarding staff eat together at breakfast and for the evening meal, with a roast lunch every Sunday . Evenings are busy, with dedicated prep time, giving boarders the chance to feel fully at home within the school .

There is a comfortable routine for each child to follow every day, culminating in a bedtime story by torchlight – a highlight that many boarders remember years after moving on from Cheltenham Prep . Weekends allow more time to relax, with Sunday activities ranging from on-site swimming, climbing, skate-boarding and launching model boats on The Lake, to whole House trips to local theatres and theme parks . Boarders are encouraged to enjoy all activities in small family sized groups as well as to pursue their individual interests .

While we have a strong core of full time boarders, the Boarding House also provides flexible boarding opportunities for pupils who either need, or wish, to board on a less regular basis . This may be when parents are away with work, when sports fixtures and drama productions mean a late finish to the school day or simply when they wish to spend more time with friends in school .

Co-curricularWe have a wide range of clubs and societies as well as many different levels of sports teams, ensuring that there is an opportunity for the excellent to excel and the keen to participate and enjoy .

Sports offered usually include: Athletics, Badminton, Cricket, Cross Country, Golf, Gymnastics, Hockey, Netball, Polo, Rounders, Rugby, Skiing, Soccer, Swimming and Tennis .

Hobbies, Clubs and Activities that can usually be undertaken include: Archery, Art, Biathlon Club, Campcraft, Chess, Choirs, Clay Pigeon Shooting, Climbing, Cookery, Craft & Pottery, Dance, Debating, Drama, Fencing, Forest School, Gym, ICT, Karate, Music Groups, Orchestra, Polo, Scouts, Skiing, Swim Squad and Watersports .

Registration & Admissions ProcedureIntroductionPupils may join Cheltenham Prep in any Year group from the age of three onwards . Entrance is usually in September, but entry at any point during the year is possible, subject to place availability .

Entry into Years 7 and 8 is selective and is based upon our assessment of a child’s ability to thrive within a 10 GCSE curriculum in Cheltenham College . Entry to younger years is also assessment based, but this is less formal, and focused primarily on whether or not a child will thrive within our school environment .

Boarding places are available for all pupils from Year 3 upwards . The Boarding House, located in the main building of Cheltenham Prep, has separate self-contained accommodation for boys and girls . Pupils wishing to enter the school as boarders are welcome to have an overnight Boarding Taster sleepover .

The Admissions Team is responsible for all aspects of the registration, entry and scholarships procedure and will be happy to assist with any additional questions you may have . You can contact us either by telephone: 01242 522 697, or if you prefer, by email: [email protected] (Jennifer Bailey, Registrar) and [email protected] (Suzanne McQuoid, Admissions Assistant) . More information can also be found on the website: www.cheltenhamcollege.org/prep-admissions .

Visiting us The admissions process normally begins with a visit to the school as this is by far the best way to see what we have to offer . You are welcome to come to one of our Open Mornings or to book a personal visit on a weekday during term time . A visit normally lasts around two hours and you will meet the

Headmaster, Deputy Heads or another senior staff member who would be instrumental in your child’s education . You will also be given a tour of the school and be able to meet our current pupils . If you are interested in a boarding place, you will also have the opportunity to look around the Boarding House and meet Mr Wells, our Head of Boarding .

If you would like to book a visit, the Admissions Team will be happy to make the necessary arrangements, so please do call or email . Registrations for Open Mornings can also be made through our website: www.cheltenhamcollege.org/prep-admissions

RegistrationRegistration to place your child on the entry list for admission may be made at any time . To register your child, please complete the Registration Form (located at the back of this booklet) and return it, together with copies of recent school reports and the photo page of your child’s passport, as well as the non-refundable Registration Fee of £150 . The 11+ Application Form must also be completed and returned to us if your child will be joining Year 7 (Upper School) . Once accepted, this secures a provisional place on our entry lists and ensures that your child will be considered for a place at the school . Please note that in the event of places being oversubscribed, registration for a place does not automatically guarantee that a place will subsequently be available .

Taster DaysPrior to receiving a place offer, it is recommended that all pupils hoping to join Cheltenham Prep spend a Taster Day with us . These are offered on any school weekday in term-time and enable your child to experience a normal school day within his or her Year group . Each visiting child is given a ‘buddy’ for the day who is in the same class, making sure that he or she feels at home from the outset . During the Taster Day, class teachers will

informally and unobtrusively assess your child to make sure that he or she would thrive within our community and to highlight any possible issues that might be identified .

Wherever possible, pupils will also meet the Headmaster so that he can get to know them personally . We require prospective boarders or flexi boarders to join us for a sleepover in our Boarding House following a Taster Day .

Entry into Kingfishers (Pre-Prep)Kingfishers, our Pre-Prep Department, encapsulates Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 . Entry is operated on a first come, first served basis upon the receipt of Registration . Offers are made subject to children completing a Taster Day or session with us, and to our staff feeling that we are able to meet each child’s needs academically and socially .

The aim of the Taster Day is:

• To assess your child’s development informally, ensuring we can offer the most appropriate care

• To ensure your child will be happy with us and fit in well with the other children

• To ensure that both you and your child feel comfortable with Kingfishers .

Entry at 11+Entry at 11+ is selective and normally subject to passing our 11+ Entrance Examinations . These examinations, held in the November of Year 6, are taken at Cheltenham Prep on the 11+ Assessment Day, and are held in conjunction with our 11+ Entrance Day . All candidates must have submitted completed Registration and 11+ Application Forms, located at the back of this booklet, before attending this day .

The 11+ Entrance Day focuses on children experiencing the journey from Year 7 through to College, showcasing exciting elements which make up Prep and College life . The Entrance

8

Page 9: Admissions and Information 2015-16

Day consists of group activities and taster lessons, and is inspiring, fun and enjoyable . The day gives us the opportunity to see how children integrate and interact over the course of the day and concludes with afternoon tea at College for all candidates and their families, giving everyone the opportunity to meet and speak with Prep and College staff .

The 11+ Academic Assessments consist of:

• ISEB pre-tests in English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning (computerised tests)

• A short handwritten task

Pupils entering Year 7 from within Cheltenham Prep are also required to take and pass the 11+ Assessments . Further details on the ISEB Pre-tests can be found at www.iseb.co.uk .

11+ remote applicants, 11+ pupils applying to Cheltenham Prep after our 11+ Entrance and Assessment Days, or pupils applying to join Year 8 sit our own entrance papers in English, Maths, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning . These can be taken (subject to space availability) at any time by arrangement with the Admissions Team . For candidates who are non-native English speakers, entry is also subject to a satisfactory level of English and an English as an Additional Language (EAL) paper replaces the English papers .

Pupils who pass these 11+ or 12+ assessments will be offered a place at Cheltenham Prep; this will usually also guarantee entry into Cheltenham College at 13+, although 13+ Common Entrance will still be sat for setting purposes .

The majority of our pupils move from Cheltenham Prep to Cheltenham College at 13+ . However pupils can be prepared for any senior school, for example a grammar at 11+ or another independent school at 13+ . All schools have different entry criteria so parents are asked to inform us of their child’s preferred onward school, if not Cheltenham College, as soon as possible .

11+ Scholarships & AwardsAt Cheltenham Prep, excellence is encouraged across the breadth of school life, both academic and extra-curricular . One of the main vehicles for such encouragement is the offer of 11+ Scholarships and Exhibitions to those who show outstanding potential . Awards are offered for excellence in Academic, Art, Design and Technology, Music and Sport .

An 11+ Scholarship will normally be a maximum value of 20% of the fees, and an Exhibition is a maximum of 10% of the fees . Pupils are welcome to apply for more than one award, but may not receive more than 30% remission of fees, even when they hold Scholarships or Exhibitions in two or more categories . When applying for more than one award, the commitment that accompanies successful applications in terms of extra-curricular workload should not be underestimated .

Any awards made at 11+ will normally continue throughout a child’s time at Cheltenham College, provided that the pupil continues to perform and contribute to school life in the appropriate field (this includes participating in the relevant 13+ Scholarship) . There are also opportunities to enhance or gain new awards if he or she moves on to College, subject to performance in the 13+ Scholarships, but this cannot be guaranteed .

Please see our 11+ Entry and Scholarship booklet for more details .

Entry into all other YearsEntry into Years 3 - 6 is operated on a first come, first served basis, upon the receipt of Registration . The next step is for the pupil to join us for a Taster Day and to sit our age appropriate assessments . The assessment tests are relatively informal, and designed to ensure that all new pupils can access and enjoy our curriculum . Should a pupil perform particularly poorly in these tests, this will be highlighted to the parents, and we may advise against entry . For entry into Years 3 and 4, assessments take place during the Taster Day . For entry into Years 5 and 6, we assess through entry papers in English, Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning and these tests are also used for setting purposes . These entrance papers should be taken on a separate day to the Taster Day . Based on satisfactory performance on Taster Days and assessments, we will proceed to offer a place .

All pupils joining us in these Years will still sit the 11+ examinations in the Autumn Term of Year 6 . Pupils who pass these 11+ assessments will normally be offered a place at Cheltenham College at 13+ .

Final Acceptance and ConditionsCandidate’s parents or guardians receive a Final Acceptance Form, together with a copy of our Terms and Conditions, when a place is formally offered . The Final Acceptance Form must be completed and signed by both parents or guardians, then returned to the Admissions Team together with the completed Health Certificate and the relevant Final Acceptance Fee .

Final Acceptance Fees are as follows:

• Kingfishers to Year 6: £250

• Year 7: £500 (comprising £250 deposit and £250 Bursary Fund contribution)

• Year 8: £1,000 (comprising £750 deposit and £250 Bursary Fund contribution)

The Bursary Fund enables Cheltenham Prep to broaden its entry and offer bursarial support to children whose families would otherwise be unable to afford our school fees .

Non-UK residents may be required to pay a full term’s fees as their Final Acceptance deposit . We reserve the right to require a banker’s reference and/or an additional deposit before a pupil, normally resident overseas, is admitted to Cheltenham Prep .

In all cases, the deposit provides financial security against the final fee invoice that is raised after a pupil has left and it is put towards final outstanding items where necessary . The deposit will be refunded at the time the pupil leaves, minus sums due to the school . Once paid, if the pupil does not enter Cheltenham Prep the Final Acceptance Fee will be forfeited .

Before a boy or girl is admitted to Cheltenham Prep, parents or guardians must sign their consent to our Terms and Conditions (attached to the Final Acceptance forms) . This includes consent to adhere to all current school policies . We reserve the right to revise all policies on an ongoing basis .

Visa requirements for International PupilsSome pupils may require a Tier 4 Student Visa in order to be able to study in the UK . While it is the responsibility of parents to determine whether or not their child needs such a Visa (and to apply for it), the Admissions Team will provide the required Certificate of Acceptance for Study (CAS) to enable you to do this once your place has been formally accepted . The CAS is issued, on request from either parents or agents, in the term prior to entry and can be used by parents when making any visa application .

Further details regarding visas and entry into the UK may be obtained from the United Kingdom Visa and Immigration (UKVI) website: www.gov.uk/visas-immigration .

As the rules are complex we do encourage you to read this thoroughly if you suspect that a visa might be required .

Charges for Learning Support and English as an Additional Language (EAL)Our aim is to support every child at Cheltenham Prep in becoming the best that he or she can be, whether excelling in a scholarship discipline or overcoming mild learning difficulties to achieve academically . The Coach House, our Centre for Learning, plays a vital role in assisting pupils for whom work is made more challenging by dyslexia, or other specific learning needs, and also in offering support for academically gifted children to help them reach their full potential . Support is also available to pupils for whom English is an Additional Language (EAL) .

The level of support provided is recommended by Coach House, in conjunction with assessments and discussions with parents . Lessons, delivered by qualified teachers, are offered on an individual, pair or small group basis .

There are two levels of support and termly charges are as follows:

Level 1 £160 1 x weekly Coach House lesson (Pair or group)

Level 2 £200 1 x weekly Coach House lesson (1:1)

Some general in-class support is available throughout school . There is no charge for this support . Further information may be obtained from Mrs Gill Barrett, the Director of Learning, at: [email protected]

BursariesWe are committed to widening access by providing bursaries for pupils who, without such help, might otherwise not be able to attend our school . Cheltenham College has a significant number of pupils on bursary support, attending both The Prep

and College, who make very full and valued contributions to school life .

Unlike some schools, bursaries at Cheltenham College are not dependent upon performance or merit; they are available to any pupil who is able to meet our baseline entrance requirements, and whom we feel will strongly benefit from the education that we offer .

All bursaries are means-tested . They are based on careful and sympathetic scrutiny of individual family circumstances and no generalisation of appropriate income levels is possible . A child must be registered before a bursary can be applied for and we strongly recommend early application as these funds are limited .

Further details can be obtained by downloading the ‘Bursaries – Widening Access’ document from the Cheltenham College Preparatory School website . Families in need of financial support should contact the Bursar’s office by emailing [email protected] . All financial information submitted by parents is treated in the strictest of confidence .

In addition to the wider bursary provision, we are proud of our strong military links and offer generous discounts for parents currently serving in the UK Armed Forces . For further information, please contact the Admissions Team .

UK Armed Forces DiscountCheltenham College has strong military links and we offer generous discounts for parents currently serving in the UK Armed Forces . For further information, please contact the Admissions Team .
