President’s ReportHi Everyone,
Well the silly season has arrived. Christmas is upon us and out
goes all your money. We are looking forward to our Christmas show
featuring the top band Peter Coad and the Coad Sisters plus Jim
Hermel and Margaret Coad.
Don’t forget to wear your Christmas gear and even bring along
decorations for your table if you wish. It always makes the day
even brighter and more fun if you get into the spirit of the
season.
Also don’t forget that Evonne is making up Christmas baskets to
raffle for funds for the Len Wakefield Memorial which enables us to
give encouragement to a well deserving young recipient by way of a
trophy and a sum of money towards their music, be it via music
lessons or musical instruments or to enter a big festival section
through our sponsorship. For more information about the Len
Wakefield Memorial, just ask Lorraine or myself. Remember if we
don’t encourage our young to keep up the country music here in
Australia then we could lose it.
I wish you all a safe and peaceful Christmas and the same for
your New Year and God Bless you all.
Di Smith (pres)
Don’t forget the real reason for Christmas.

LORRAINE’S ROUND-UP - OctoberThanks to all who came out to our
second Sunday of the month show in October. We will go back to our
first Sunday next year even if it is on the long weekend. Those that
didn’t come missed out on a new band on the scene, Top Dead Centre.
They were terrific, a little more than Country, but with there
being three vocals and great harmonies, sounded good. They come
from the Barossa Valley area. David Gebert was in the ever popular
Country Bumpkin Band. We oldies of the club had fond memories of
the days with Helen Downer who lately isn’t very well. Who wouldn’t
mention Greg ‘Short Wheelbase’ Smallwood, he is
a real dynamo on drums, great guitar work and vocals by Steve
Gregory, nice Johnny Cash songs and the beauty in the band,
Victoria Van Bertouch, vocals and keyboard.
There may be a few who say that Top Dead Centre was not strictly
Country, but with all the young ones on the scene we have to get
used to it.On the day there were more dancers on the floor when it
got rockabilly. The band also played lots of songs not usually
heard at our club. I say, I and a lot of others enjoyed them, as
I’ve said before let’s be a club of happiness and enjoyment of
music. (see ‘What Defines Country?’ by Raelz on page 8)Lorraine

LORRAINE’S ROUND-UP - NovemberHere we are nearly another year
has passed.
The hot hot weather has arrived so on with the fans and
coolers.
Band of the month, The Creole cowboyZ as usual gave us some
great unusual Country Music. They enjoy what they do and it comes
out in their presentation, there are guitars, washboards,
Didgeridoo, drums and violin just to name a few. They all have a go
at vocals.
They also put on a Cajun dance for everyone to have a try at
doing. The line dancers seem to pick the style up easily. Well done
to all who tried it.
Well that is all about November, on to Xmas show day with Peter
Coad and Sisters. It should be a happy day, we might even have
Father Xmas along to get into the spirit all please wear a Xmas
T-Shirt or hat. I wish everyone a happy Xmas and a bright New
Year.
Next year in February we will be celebrating our 21st year.
Thanks to everyone for their support over the years for just coming
along and for helping out, to the Artists and Bands, thank you for
making my job easy. Country Music is one big family. Let’s continue
into the years ahead.
Lorraine
Because your Publicity Officer was at the Port Pirie Festival in
November and no one sent him any photos there are none of the
November show in this issue!

October and November were very busy months for your Publicity
OfficerMany Festivals were attended including the Semaphore Music
Festival, Fleurieu Folk Festival, Port Pirie Music Festival,
Murraylands Music Festival and Harrietville Bluegrass Convention!
Many hundreds of photos were taken. There are links to some of them
on my website (www.ianfisk.org). Also Steve Foster was at the Port
Adelaide Maritime Museum and Bluegrass Junction at the Folk Centre.
Tracy Coster also toured SA.
Though all were not Country Music events, much Country Music was
at all of them. Some of the highlights included Amber Joy Poulton
and band, the Creole cowboyZ, Bridgland Brothers Bluegrass (at
several of the above events) and The Cowtippers. At the
Harrietville Bluegrass Conventions, as well as great SA and
interstate groups there were a number of overseas groups from
Tasmania, New Zealand, Canada and the US.
In Port Pirie the talent search results included in
the over 15 years old section 1st Earnest Schulz, 2nd Jasmine
Reschke and 3rd David Morrissey.
At the Murraylands Music Festival Talent Quest some of the
results included in the Senior Mail section 1st David Morrissey,
2nd Michael Bristow. In the Senior Female section 1st Mellissa
Preuska, 2nd Melody Feder, 3rd Jasmine Reschke.
Perhaps in 2010 some of the above will perform at our Club?
In 2010 there are many more Country Music Festivals to attend,
including Tamworth in January, Lake Charlegrark Country Music
Marathon, Festival of Country Music at Mt. Gambier, Cowell Country
Music & Ute Muster, Lameroo Country Music Festival, Country
Music for Cancer in Kapunda and of course Barmera. That is just for
the first half of 2010! More details in later issues of Country
Call, or check the South Australian Council for Country Music Gig
guide. (www.saccm.com)
The start of my day begins for the Adelaide Country Music Club
day at 9am by switching on the lights and the air-conditioner.
Then I open the cupboards, set up tables and chairs (with help
from others), get the urns out and set up with water. In between I
help Evonne bring in the kitchen a trolley of cakes and food for
sandwiches. These chores continue all throughout the day then at
the end of the day, we clean up (with assistance from others)
putting everything back in the cupboards. Other duties as vice
president include assisting the
president and secretary. That includes regularly picking up the
mail from the mail box.
As I am a jack of all trades, I also do maintenance on the
broken cupboard locks and make new cash register drawers. If it’s
broken I will I fix it.
I also have enjoyed making new signs for the tea and coffee,
band table and birthday tables also the disabled table. Thank God
for Country Music.
Yours faithfully, Russell Byrne.

Chicken Balls (who says there is no such thing?)For the November
Adelaide Committee Meeting I made a plate of nibbles of Chicken
Balls with cubes of fruit cheese for Russell to take. The Committee
Members asked for my delicious Recipe for the Chicken Balls.
HERE IT IS:- -Go to Fresh and Easy Chicken or Leonards and buy
their Chicken Patties. Bring them home and part them to size and
roll them into small balls, add a small amount of oil in a fry pan,
cook at low to medium heat turning over untill an even light golden
colour.

I’m talking musically here folks. It is great to discuss one’s
perceptions with another soul. Over the years there have been
observations made that certain bands don’t play ‘Country’. Well,
sometimes those entertainers might be ‘border-line’ in their style.
I remember clearly a dear friend, (Club member now deceased),
stating to me many years ago that if it wasn’t Australian Country
then it wasn’t country at all. That was his preferred music and he
was entitled to that opinion, although we did have some heated
discussions on that fact. American or Alternative Country did not
really rate according to him. We did agree to disagree of
course!
Although I’ve heard comments regarding other performers over the
years, recently at our Club some discussions arose. It seemed that
patrons either really loved the ‘Band of the Day’ or just tolerated
or maybe weren’t particularly interested. Well, if we all loved the
same groups/music/style then there would not be such variety to
choose from. Pretty fortunate we can all do this I think.
What surprised me was that some persons made the claim on the
day that the music wasn’t ‘country’.
Interestingly enough I was jotting down the songs they did. Why?
Well, it’s hard to remember what was played when trying to recall
later and anyway, I was curious as to whether they included
any/many of the pieces that my own band’s repertoire does. I guess
it’s irrelevant but we actually have about seven pieces in our own
sets. Everything else presented was different. Yay! Oh, and to
clear up one thing said, which was really a strong one, that they
didn’t do ‘country’, I would ask, are the following recognisable
country artists? Alan Jackson, Eddie Rabbitt, Patsy Cline, Merle
Haggard, Steve Earle, Slim Dusty, James Raine, Jimmy Buffet, Jerry
Reed, Dwight Yoakum, Johnny Cash, Charlie Daniel’s Band, Janis
Joplin? Of course they are! These are just some of the artists
whose hits that band entertained us with.
A few mentioned that some of the stuff wasn’t suitable for
dancing. Everyone has their style and choose appropriate songs to
kick up their heels. You either want to give it a go or not! The
line dancers put on a good show I thought.
Well, I guess that for an afternoon once a month and for the
enjoyment of such diversity, we perhaps could just show support
anyway. If really disinterested in the entertainment on any given
day, there must be alternative things one can do!
The Committee is aware that not everyone will be satisfied with
everything. Believe me it is really hard to get 100% satisfaction
but we each do our bit, (all voluntarily too!), and really strive
to make a success of each event. There are extra meetings for us,
running around at our own expense, physical input and lots of
organisation behind the scenes – this each and every month. Finally
getting to work for everyone’s benefit on Club days as well! We
take pride in achieving our goals though and do get to have fun as
well.
It is fine to make general comments to Committee Members,
(please make sure they ARE currently on committee though!), yet be
reminded there is a special Box in the foyer of the venue for your
ideas. We would be delighted to know your thoughts! Why tell
everyone else? Tell us! Feedback, especially of the positive kind,
is really appreciated. Members and visitors alike are encouraged to
avail themselves of this facility.
It is your Club, my Club, our Club and we are here to proudly
promote the continuance of Country Music on all levels. Positivity
is so uplifting - don’t you think?
I appreciate you reading my contribution ... I trust I have
explained some things and possibly given food for thought. Thank
you!

What Defines Country?
The Maverick Tie
Several years ago there was a real gentleman in country music by
the name of Merv Rayson (husband of Evonne Rayson from the ACMC ).
Merv always dressed immaculately when performing, often wearing a
Maverick Tie. He had a lot of time for people and struck up a
friendship with Dennis Verran.
After Merv sadly passed away, Evonne gave Dennis, Marv’s black
Maverick Tie which he treasures very much and has worn on very
special occasions. Ian had always wanted one, so with Bev’s help I
managed to ‘borrow’ it and have made him several in different
colours using the original as a pattern.
