SHENNANIGANS! (Or What Our Youth are Planning for September)

CHURCH CHAT: resumes Sunday, September 10th. See you there to kick off the new programming season!!!

YOUTH GATHERING: All youth (6th – 12th graders) are welcome to gather Sunday afternoons from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. in the fellowship hall as we kick off our Fall program including the following, between running with the Rummage Sale:

∗ Rescheduling the lock-in (bring an adult volunteer name who’ll stay overnight for a 2 hour shift)

∗ Confirmation – starting with Good Shepherd on October 1st from 5 – 6:30 p.m.. We’ll meet on Sundays through 11/19 in the Mt. Olivet Chapel and will not have Mentors this year since the Protection Policy and related Conference Certification are still being worked out with the church at large. I’ll be a trainer for certification starting late Fall 2017 and we’ll begin offering training @ DFUMC annually and reassess how we can reintroduce the Mentor aspect of our course.

∗ Prayer Tent Revival space @ the Farmer’s Market for the 2018 summer season

∗ Rummage Sale fundraiser plans – SALE DATES ARE SEPTEMBER 8TH (9 a.m. – 7 p.m.) & 9TH (9 a.m. – noon and then 12:15 p.m. – 2 p.m. is the $5 bag sale and other clearance priced items)!!! ALL YOUTH NEED TO GET YOUR 10 HOURS IN IF YOU WANT TO GO ON THE HALLOWEEKENDS CEDAR POINT TRIP!!! EVERYONE IS INVITED TO SIGN UP AT THE WELCOME CENTER TO HELP WORK A SHIFT AT THE RUMMAGE SALE!!!

∗ 2017 – 2018 Youth Program Calendar – PICK YOURS UP AT THE WELCOME CENTER!!!

Hopefully, it is apparent that we are underway with our annual youth community partnership and fundraising campaigns here at church. Since last year’s post Rummage Sale debrief meeting, when we reviewed the event in totality and specifically its purpose and aim, including notes from those who could not be there, I have been contemplating further what the true purpose of these events is. How does that translate to living that out as the best representatives of ourselves, the DFUMC church, the Church at large, and Jesus? Does this look different for each one of us? Are we able to agree on some themes that we can hold dear during these times as inspiration? Do we want to? Are we not called to?...

Background: the focus for the youth program’s annual youth community partnership and fundraising campaigns, as was decided and reaffirmed during last year’s Rummage Sale debrief meeting, is equal in partnering with our community to put people in touch with goods in a resourceful way that will honor God's creation (especially the environment), get us in closer relationship with one another, AND ALSO put the funds we raise during this partnership to good use by sustaining and advancing our work for furthering God's kingdom on earth as it is in heaven. So, these are not charity based events – they are partnership events based on a Mountain T.O.P.esque philosophy of empowerment – for more information on this type of philosophy, feel free to get in contact with your Youth Director, Jill Sestok, or read a book further explaining this type of philosophy like “Toxic Charity” by Robert D. Lupton. None of these goals is more important or less important than any other. They are all in fact equal. This is the driving force of the event inspiration behind our Vision Statement of Connecting with God, Caring for Community, and Committing to Serve, which serves as the backdrop for everything. Further, the “Leading in a Liminal Season” by Rev. Susan Beaumont (introduced at the 2017 Michigan Area Annual Conference) is the leadership philosophy that is used for the youth program, and therefore these events as well, to guide and direct everything. Please don’t hesitate to contact Jill Sestok for a copy of this leadership style and philosophy as well. It is available in both hard copy and digital format.

ANNUAL PARKING LOT FUNDRAISER: THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR PARKING, ASSSISTANCE, AND SERVICE!!! We raised $2,309.78 this year, which was up from last year and the 3rd highest pull of all time. We accomplished all of that with 33 volunteers and several church staff members. According to church records, this was our 8th Annual Parking Lot Fundraiser (we took several years off after the first year back in 2006) and my 4th running it. All funds raised will be going towards youth programming, ministry, and outreach, including half of all monies raised going towards our YOUTH 2019 (quadrennial UMC conference trip) to Kentucky. Christie Brewster and I will be getting together towards the end of September to make sure Camping Scholarships are cared for in our planning as well, of course!!! THE BEST PART WAS THE BRAINSTORMING!!!

THAT OLD CREEK – IT JUST KEEPS ROLLING

Bev and I go to Gatlinburg Tenn. and the Great Smoky Mountains every year. There is a creek in back of the place in which we stay. That old creek, it just keeps rolling.

I started thinking about it and it occurred to me that God's love just keeps rolling also.

His love is endless and it endures forever. You can hear the water as it splashes over the rocks in the stream. God's love just keeps rolling in us and sometimes I want to make a joyful noise.

As we walk beside the creek there is a peace and quiet. So are the moments we spend in prayer and there is a certain calm that comes over us. The creek keeps rolling and God keeps rolling with a peace and love that endures.

The stones in the creek help give the creek more character and God gives us stones of dignity and hope for each other. Some of the rocks have been bleached white due to the water rushing over them and God washes away our sins and cleanses our hearts with His living water.

That old creek – it just keeps rolling. So does God's love. Roll on.

UNITED METHODIST UNION FUNDS

IMMIGRATION MINISTRY AT

DEARBORN FIRST UMC!

Last month, Dearborn First UMC voted to submit a grant to the United Methodist Union (UMU) to support the Justice For Our Neighbors of SE Michigan (JFON-SEMI) ministry, hosted at our church. The grant application requested $5,000 for Dearborn First UMC for 1 year and $10,000 for the creation of JFON Michigan for 1 year, which would enable a merger of JFON-West Michigan and JFON-SE Michigan.

The UMU, in a heartfelt show of support for this ministry, and this congregation, granted $5,000 for Dearborn First UMC EVERY YEAR FOR THE NEXT 3 YEARS and $10,000 to JFON-MICHIGAN EVERY YEAR FOR THE NEXT 3 YEARS!

The United Methodist Union is the mission body of the Detroit Renaissance District. It recognizes the work JFON-SEMI is doing in Southeast Michigan, and recognizes the impact it has had as a ministry on Dearborn First UMC, our community, and our ability to do ministry in the world as a congregation. The Union was resolute that this work should continue. It is a joy and a blessing to be celebrated!!! And thanks to everybody who has supported, and continues to support this ministry with your prayers, presence, gifts, service and witness!

Kirstin Karoub, Grant Writer

Quilt show in September? No, no! It’s not until October.

The 13th and 14th of October, to be exact.

But the preparations have begun. Invitations and reminders have gone out. Quilt procuring is well under way. Here’s how you can help in September: ◊ Distribute posters in our community.

They will be available on the Welcome Center.

◊ Grab a handful of Coupon invitations for your purse and share with anyone remotely interested. These, too, will be available on the Welcome Center.

◊ Bake and freeze for the bake sale. ◊ Sign up to work at the quilt show at one

of the Quilt Show Fairs. These will take place on Sundays, Sept. 17, Sept. 24 and Oct. 1 in the Church Parlor after the service.

Please direct your questions and

suggestions to Lise Dehlbaek, 313-561-5257 ([email protected])

H W !

God's Blessings to all! It is September, and we are rapidly approaching Autumn. So let's not forget that in a couple of short months we'll once again be hosting those less fortunate at Dearborn First United Methodist Church. Hospitality Week is always Thanksgiving Week for our church.

We are still seeking volunteers to contact various businesses and organizations to request donations of food or gift certificates for food and other items like sturdy paper/cardboard plates, napkins, other paper products for kitchen and restrooms, clothing and personal hygiene products.

I am hoping we can get some people to contact Meijer, Kroger, Target, Walmart and other retailers to assist us with donations. The cost of this week of hospitality well exceeds $3500.00. Anyone that may have connections to any group, company or organization that might help is encouraged to contact Jeff Walsh at 313-220-5999. Jeff needs volunteers to contact these places to obtain information on how to apply and to then assist us in obtaining donations through phone contacts, letter writing or personal visits. It usually requires months of lead time to get charitable donations so we need to start soon.

All assistance is greatly appreciated! Just an FYI. We usually get about 50 people so we need as much as we can get!

Thanks and God Bless
